April 26, Dad burns the toast, yells at Toby, thanks me for cleaning the cab of the truck, kisses Mum and Toby, then he's gone April 27, the war starts May 21, the city's in ruins, blackouts nearly all the time, food is hard to find September 13, Dad's heard news of a boat. We might get out of here yet September 28, it is just after dawn. A boat from their Navy has found us. We waved and cried and cheered. But then, slowly, we realised they were shouting at us, telling us to go away September 30, we are in a huge prison, with razor wire all around us. The government says there's no room for us. The Prime Minister says that if they let us out into the community it ll just encourage other illegal immigrants. The Deputy Prime Minister says we re not genuine refugees. The Minister for Immigration says we should have gone through the proper procedures and applied to come here the prescribed way. Apparently there was a queue or a waiting list or something, and we were meant to find an Immigration Office and put our names down to be considered. I guess they re right. I feel terrible about the trouble we've caused them.

Although I have penned the odd verse since I was a youngster, I started writing regularly when I married. For the past forty-three years, I have composed for my wife Marion a poem for our anniversary, her birthday on the following day and for Valentines Day. She calls me a dreamy romantic, and I probably am, but I don't apologise for it. The tradition has progressed so that I usually provide a piece for birthdays of my family, occasionally for friends, and also for special occasions. These have been my main inspiration. Two other stimuli act as my muse: a love of travel and a love of Nature. Professionally and on vacation, I have travelled widely, and on all modes of transport. I am not particularly knowledgeable about Nature, but I love observing the cycle of the seasons and their effect on birds and small animals in the area where I live.

Home and Away explores how performative writing serve as a process that critically interrogates space/place in relation to personal, social, cultural, and political understanding. By combining aesthetic expression and inquiry with critical reflection, the contributors in this volume use a variety of narrative strategies—autoethnography, mystoriography, creative cartography, the lyric essay, fictocriticism, collage, the screenplay, and poetics—to position place as the starting point for the aesthetic impulse. The anthology showcases the power and potential of performative writing to illustrate the ways we interact with and in place; provides examples of the ways one can express lived experience; and demonstrates the ways discourses overlap while extending our understanding of identity and place, whether one is home or away. Although the chapters are fixed by their literary form in this volume, many of chapters are best realized in a performance or shared publicly via an oral tradition.
