Media-produced images of people on the move and religion influence our conceptions of migration. These images have varied content and intent. Some provide awareness of the frequently disturbing situation of people who have lost everything, who have had to leave their homes and families and are desperately searching for new possibilities. Others exploit the traumatic topic and the fate of its subjects to entertain their audience with sensational news, which may include images of vast streams of people making their way to a safe haven in new countries. The mediatization of the phenomenon of flight introduces new pictures and perceptions into current debates about migration. It also requires that we interrogate how we view and engage such images and audiovisual documents. Ethical debates about responsibilities combine with questions about the role of religion and its functions. The present volume approaches the subject of migration and religion from an interdisciplinary perspective with a focus on audiovisual representation. The contributions consider feature films, documentaries, television reports, short films, and press photos.

Narrating the pilgrimage to Mecca discusses a wide variety of historical and contemporary personal accounts of the pilgrimage to Mecca, most of which presented in English for the first time. The book addresses how being situated in a specific cultural context and moment in history informs the meanings attributed to the pilgrimage experience. The various contributions reflect on how, in their stories, pilgrims draw on multiple cultural discourses and practices that shape their daily lifeworlds to convey the ways in which the pilgrimage to Mecca speaks to their senses and moves them emotionally. Together, the written memoirs and oral accounts discussed in the book offer unique insights in Islam’s rich and evolving tradition of hajj and ʿumra storytelling. Communication And Identity In The Diaspora written by Christine L. Ogan and has been published by Lexington Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Social Science categories.

"If my feet are in Amsterdam, my head and heart are in Turkey." This is the dilemma of the Turkish "guestworkers" in Christine Ogan's fascinating new work on the Netherland's migrant population. Ogan explores the explosive impact the Turkish media has had on this particular diasporic community as they struggle to adapt to life in the West and to redefine their personal and collective identity. Never before have people who lived in adopted lands had such immediate and pervasive access to information and entertainment from their birth countries. Communication and Identity documents how these newly available communication media have enabled migrants to maintain a connection with their ethnic culture, a psychological comfort zone that minimizes estrangement from Turkey, and exacerbates the separation from Dutch public life. Not only a superb case study on how the Netherlands' Turkish community defines itself, this remarkable book's message resonates across the wider European debate currently raging on immigration.

Identity And Migration In Europe Multidisciplinary Perspectives written by MariaCaterina La Barbera and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-11-24 with Social Science categories.

This book addresses the impact of migration on the formation and transformation of identity and its continuous negotiations. Its ground is the understanding of identity as a complex social phenomenon resulting from constant negotiations between personal conditions, social relationships, and institutional frameworks. Migrations, understood as dynamic processes that do not end when landing in the host country, offer the best conditions to analyze the construction and transformation of social identities in the postcolonial and globalized societies. Searching for novel epistemologies and methodologies, the research questions here addressed are how identity is negotiated in migration processes, and how these negotiations work in contemporary multiethnic Europe. This edited volume brings to the field a novel convergence of theoretical and empirical approaches by gathering together scholars from different countries of Europe and the Mediterranean area, from different disciplines and backgrounds, challenging the traditional discipline division.

The Millennium Dome, Braveheart and Rolls Royce cars. How do cultural icons reproduce and transform a sense of national identity? How does national identity vary across time and space, how is it contested, and what has been the impact of globalization upon national identity and culture? This book examines how national identity is represented, performed, spatialized and materialized through popular culture and in everyday life. National identity is revealed to be inherent in the things we often take for granted - from landscapes and eating habits, to tourism, cinema and music. Our specific experience of car ownership and motoring can enhance a sense of belonging, whilst Hollywood blockbusters and national exhibitions provide contexts for the ongoing, and often contested, process of national identity formation. These and a wealth of other cultural forms and practices are explored, with examples drawn from Scotland, the UK as a whole, India and Mauritius. This book addresses the considerable neglect of popular cultures in recent studies of nationalism and contributes to debates on the relationship between ‘high' and ‘low' culture.

The family lives of immigrants and ethnic minority populations have become central to arguments about the right and wrong ways of living in multicultural societies. While the characteristic cultural practices of such families have long been scrutinized by the media and policy makers, these groups themselves are beginning to reflect on how to manage their family relationships. Exploring case studies from Austria, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Australia, The Family in Question explores how those in public policy often dangerously reflect the popular imagination, rather than recognizing the complex changes taking place within the global immigrant community.
