Excerpt from Home Dressmaking and the Art of Good Dressing N bringing this work before my readers it has been my endeavour to portray Home Dress making as simply and attractively as possible. In every family there should at least be one girl Who understands dressmaking; who can cut and fit as well as sew, for there is no telling how soon reverses may come, and girls, well Off at present, reduced to earning their own living. Apart from this reason, it is very convenient as well as economical to have a dressmaker in the family. In the matter Of making over things and making up everyday frocks for younger children, it is well to have one who can be depended upon to go on with the work and take all responsibility, Therefore, mothers be wise in time, and see that one at least Of your daughters is taught dressmaking in all its details. Excerpt from Home Dressmaking Made Easy One might style this an explanation or excuse for the book being in existence, but there seemed to be a place for it and the author is trying to fill that niche after an experience of eighteen years with dry goods, dressmaking and the individual needs of women. From my large correspondence, I know that it is of general interest to an immense number of women who are obliged to do home dressmaking without any previous training. It has not been found advisable to illustrate current fashions, as they change too quickly to become standard, but the main principles of cutting, fitting and finishing, like the brook, go on forever, and these once learned make even the race with Dame Fashion an easy one. Have patience, perseverance and care and you will accomplish wonders. Surely it is worth the trial if you only learn to gown yourself economically and becomingly. "Make haste slowly" in dressmaking. In these days there are many conveniences offered to the home dressmaker in the way of notions, materials, sewing implements, etc., but very few are able to try them all and are thus unable to judge which is really best of the many for sale; for this reason I have given the names of several articles through this book, knowing them to be first in their line and satisfactory in every respect, and though some may be unfamiliar to my readers, when once tried they will prove indispensable. A desire to be well dressed is inborn with every woman, and man as well, and why not follow this desire unless it cause one to neglect home duties or induces one to spend more than can be afforded upon ones wardrobe? When neatly and becomingly attired a woman is happier and more at ease in her manner when in the presence of others, and remember that it costs no more to dress becomingly than it does to don the wrong materials and colors. If you do not know what is becoming and suitable Home Dressmaking will tell you. Especial attention is given in this little work to the dressing of very stout, extremely short and unduly slender figures. All figures may be improved if we only know how to do it, and I trust in a practical manner to make this possible for my readers. Many terms used by dressmakers are of an unknown tongue to an amateur, so I have added a list of definitions that I hope will assist my readers and prove, like the rest of this work, "a friend in need." Excerpt from Home Dressmaking: Or Dressmaking Made Easy Never before has dress reached the high artistic standard that it has to-day Women of culture and good taste refuse to be blown by fashion like a feather in the wind and to be forced by modistes to wear anything that is termed fashionable, no matter whether it is becoming or suitable. Dress is a means to an end, the end being to make one comfortable and pleasing to look upon. Poor, misguided creatures that some of us are, believing that because garments are costly or pretty in themselves we have attained perfection! To be really well dressed our clothes must harmonize with our surroundings. It is difficult to make some people understand this. Women say, "If I had money I would be well dressed." Let it be said right here that women who are not tastefully dressed when they spend$50 a year on their wardrobe would not be well dressed if they spent $5, 000 a year on it. Garments of one tone are more artistic and truly elegant that those that display a combination of color. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Art of Dressing Well: A Complete Guide to Economy, Style and Propriety of Costume Everybody, we may assume at the opening of this our volume on the Art of Dressing Well, desires to make a favorable impression upon society. No argument is needed to convince our readers of the advantage of dressing gracefully, richly, splendidly, or plainly, as time or place require, yet, with reference to themselves, always becomingly. In this age of black suits for the sterner sex, our opening chapters upon color must necessarily be more especially addressed to ladies. Every lady possesses that innate love of the beautiful which suggests the desire to appear at all times and in all places in appropriate and becoming costume. She does not need Sir Philip Sidney to tell her that in a happily chosen dress there is that "Which doth even beauty beautify, And most bewitch the captiv'd eye." And few will dispute the fact that the art of dressing well is greatly dependent, not only upon a skillful selection, but also on a tasteful arrangement of colors, or that without this artistic finish, the richest and costliest materials are of comparatively little avail. The pleasure derived from the contemplation of beautiful colors is one of the most universally diffused sources of enjoyment. Some have indeed supposed the feeling for beauty and harmony of color to be an innate faculty. This may be true of the educated and refined, to whom glaring tints and discordant combinations are repulsive, but the uncultivated eye is more often attracted by gaudy than harmonious hues. Excerpt from Art in Dress: With Notes on Home Decoration To secure the best results in the use of these notes a copy should be in the hands of each student. The pamphlet is, in fact, a textbook on art as applied to dress and home decoration. The fundamental purpose in the study of art principles in connection with dress and home decoration is to create a desire in the minds of the students for beauty in those things which surround them in every-day life. To obtain this harmony and beauty in the ordinary things of life, one must understand the basic principles of good color and line. Few realize that every time we combine two 'colors or two lines we create a design whether we desire to do so or not, and the result is good or bad according to the knowledge or instinct that is guiding the hand of the worker. A girl's selection of a hat or a gown evidences her feeling, or lack of feeling, in design. It is therefore greatly to be desired that she should have a guiding principle, rather than to follow in blind obedience the erratic fashions of the day.
