Bertha Johnston's book is a teaching handbook for young children. It covers a variety of exercises designed to keep youngsters occupied as they acquire new abilities. The following project is a page and a half of using scissors. The Checker-Board is an example of the book's contents (Bristol board or stiff and smooth cardboard, smooth double-coated paper, red and black, paste, scissors, ruler). Make a 15-inch square out of cardboard. For the border, draw a line parallel to each side an inch from the edge. Cut 32 134-inch squares from each sheet of colored paper. Glue eight of them in a row, alternating colors, with just the top border line touching. Make eight similar rows, one on top of the other, and give them a total of 64 squares.

Excerpt from Home Occupations for Boys and Girls The plan of this book has special reference to the Mother when comes the woful plaint, "I don't know what to do! Mama, what can I do now?" Is she busy in the kitchen? She has right there material for the little one's happy employment. Is she mending the stockings? She can give him needle and thread and, with the aid of this book, a word of suggestion. In spare moments both mother and children can together prepare papers, cards, etc., for future occasions. It will be found upon examination that although some of the articles described herein require material peculiar to certain localities, very many more may be made of things to be found in every home, whether the city flat or the remote country homestead. Usually a choice is possible. One may use the cardboard, paper, etc., saved from the scrap-basket or may send to supply houses for material partially prepared. It is an undoubted advantage for the child to be trained to see the possibilities in the raw material lying at hand. It stimulates his inventive imagination and makes for efficiency and the power to cope with emergencies. The child accustomed to looking upon odds and ends of wire, paper, weeds, seeds, and grasses as hiding delightful secrets which he may learn to unravel and utilize, may be readily trained to regard all Nature as a vast storehouse open to his investigation, and a continual source of inspiration. The child, habituated to mastering the raw material of his immediate environment, will not be discomfited if thrown upon an unknown shore, whether arctic or tropical. Excerpt from The American Girl's Home Book: Of Work and Play Long ago, when the writer was young, she owned a little book, consulted with never-flagging enthusiasm, and written by a woman who did the first intelligent and sympathetic work for children ever accomplished in this country. In Mrs. Lydia Maria Child's "Girl's Own Book" such plays as the more rigorous educational theories of the time allowed, were set forth in order, and there were also sundry small occupations for amusement; the crystallized grasses, alum-baskets, and various ornamental works still to be found in old houses, testifying to the zeal with which her instructions were followed. The little book is now, in many points, as antiquated as if written in the fifteenth, instead of the nineteenth, century; and yet it embodies a plan which has never since been carried out, - that of combining all the occupations, as well as amusements, practicable in a mixed family of all ages and tastes. As yet, though boys are provided for, girls have no book that will be a trustworthy guide, either in work or play; and it is hoped that the present one will fill that "long unoccupied niche" which many authors have felt it their mission to redeem from emptiness, and become the trusted friend and adviser of all the girls who are uncertain what is best in either work or play. Excerpt from Young Workers and Their Jobs in 1936: A Survey in Six States F amily background - The economic status of the family bore a close relation to the work of the children. Of the employed children under 16 years of age only 45 percent had a father who was employed and present in the family. In 31 percent of the cases the child's father was either dead or absent from home and in the remaining 24 percent he was present but was either unemployed or unemployable. The 16 and 17-year - old workers came from broken homes or homes with an unemployed father somewhat less often than the younger children. Of these older boys and girls, 57 percent had an employed father in the family and only 25 percent had no father at home. Adult unemployment was found to be a major factor in the children's employment. Of the children under 16 years of age, 36 percent came from families with at least one member 18 years of age or over who was totally unemployed. The corresponding figure for the older boys and girls was 30 percent. Age at leaving school. - The young workers under 16 had less school ing than those 16 and 17 years of age. All the working children who were under 16 at the time of interview had of course left school before they were 16, but not quite half the 16 and 17 -year - old workers had done so. Yet in every one of the States visited some boys and girls in the older as well as the younger group had left school before they were 14 years old. The proportion of the children leaving school before reaching 14 was very small in the New England and Middle Western States, only 3 percent and 8 percent, respectively, for the children under 16 years of age. But in the Southern States, 31 percent of the white children and 60 percent of the Negroes in the younger group had left school before they were 14. Several Southern children, white as well as Negro, reported that their schooling had stopped when they were not more than 10 years old. How Not To Be A Boy written by Robert Webb and has been published by Canongate Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-08-31 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

RULES FOR BEING A MAN Don't Cry; Love Sport; Play Rough; Drink Beer; Don't Talk About Feelings But Robert Webb has been wondering for some time now: are those rules actually any use? To anyone? Looking back over his life, from schoolboy crushes (on girls and boys) to discovering the power of making people laugh (in the Cambridge Footlights with David Mitchell), and from losing his beloved mother to becoming a husband and father, Robert Webb considers the absurd expectations boys and men have thrust upon them at every stage of life. Hilarious and heartbreaking, How Not To Be a Boy explores the relationships that made Robert who he is as a man, the lessons we learn as sons and daughters, and the understanding that sometimes you aren't the Luke Skywalker of your life - you're actually Darth Vader.
