Excerpt from Home Occupations: For Little Children In this book the Kindergarten offers to the Home suggestions for the occupation of little children with simple materials. The author does not presuppose a kindergarten training on the part of the mother, nor an ideal environment. She simply takes for granted the child's ceaseless activity and the mother's desire to furnish him with material and opportunity for development. The occupations here considered are of three kinds. The first are those which require the active participation of an older person; the second, those for which only occasional direction or assistance is necessary; the third, those in which the child can engage by himself. The first two sorts prepare the way for an increase in the number of the third kind of occupations, and all participation and help from the mother ought to be repaid in time by an added power and independence on the part of the child in contriving and carrying on games, plays and childish work by himself. Bertha Johnston's book is a teaching handbook for young children. It covers a variety of exercises designed to keep youngsters occupied as they acquire new abilities. The following project is a page and a half of using scissors. The Checker-Board is an example of the book's contents (Bristol board or stiff and smooth cardboard, smooth double-coated paper, red and black, paste, scissors, ruler). Make a 15-inch square out of cardboard. For the border, draw a line parallel to each side an inch from the edge. Cut 32 134-inch squares from each sheet of colored paper. Glue eight of them in a row, alternating colors, with just the top border line touching. Make eight similar rows, one on top of the other, and give them a total of 64 squares.

It will be found upon examination that although some of the articles described herein require material peculiar to certain localities, very many more may be made of things to be found in every home, whether the city flat or the remote country homestead. Usually a choice is possible. One may use the cardboard, paper, etc., saved from the scrap-basket or may send to supply houses for material partially prepared. It is an undoubted advantage for the child to be trained to see the possibilities in the raw material lying at hand. It stimulates his inventive imagination and makes for efficiency and the power to cope with emergencies. The child accustomed to looking upon odds and ends of wire, paper, weeds, seeds, and grasses as hiding delightful secrets which he may learn to unravel and utilize, may be readily trained to regard all Nature as a vast storehouse open to his investigation, and a continual source of inspiration. The child, habituated to mastering the raw material of his immediate environment, will not be discomfited if thrown upon an unknown shore, whether arctic or tropical. A pioneering study of children's social care in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, A Home From Home? presents new information and develops conceptual thinking about the history of children's care by investigating the centrality of key ideas about home, family, and nurture that shaped welfare provision. Departing from narratives of reform and discipline which have dominated scholarship, and drawing on material culture and social history approaches, as well as the extensive archives of the Waifs and Strays Society, Claudia Soares provides a new type of study of social care by offering a 'bottom-up' study of children's welfare, and studying the significance of specific types of care practices that held particular cultural and ideological meaning. At its core, the book uses unique first-hand accounts, individual case records, and personal correspondence of children in care in Britain to locate the voices and subjectivities of institutionalised children and their families within the voluntary welfare system between 1870 and 1920.
