Caffeine is a Killer...After surviving two murders, and two months in business, bookstore and coffee shop owner Riley Morgan expects everything to go well. It's August in the town of Cedar Grove, South Dakota. Summer is coming to an end, but there is one last hurray with the local Cedar Grove Apple Festival and Fair. It proposes to be a good occasion for all. Riley's launching out his new Spiced Chai latte and Apple Cinnamon Scones. There is trouble on the horizon though. His old college roommate and rival in everything during those four years, Evan Johansen, has decided to open up a coffee shop in town. Riley's landlord and nemesis, Brent Larsen, seems in full swing of this. Riley hates Caffeine Crush, because it's just another trendy coffee shop. It makes matters worse when Evan is found dead in his shop, with a cup of Riley's new Spiced Chai Latte nearby and this happens right after Riley is seen arguing with Evan. It will take the help of his best friend Connor, the nosy baker lady next door, his police officer girlfriend, and his trusty pitbull Duke to figure this mystery out.

Mourning the death of loved ones and recovering from their loss are universal human experiences, yet the grieving process is as different between cultures as it is among individuals. As late as the 1960s, the Wari' Indians of the western Amazonian rainforest ate the roasted flesh of their dead as an expression of compassion for the deceased and for his or her close relatives. By removing and transforming the corpse, which embodied ties between the living and the dead and was a focus of grief for the family of the deceased, Wari' death rites helped the bereaved kin accept their loss and go on with their lives. Drawing on the recollections of Wari' elders who participated in consuming the dead, this book presents one of the richest, most authoritative ethnographic accounts of funerary cannibalism ever recorded. Beth Conklin explores Wari' conceptions of person, body, and spirit, as well as indigenous understandings of memory and emotion, to explain why the Wari' felt that corpses must be destroyed and why they preferred cannibalism over cremation. Her findings challenge many commonly held beliefs about cannibalism and show why, in Wari' terms, it was considered the most honorable and compassionate way of treating the dead.

From the Introduction by Ed Gorman: If there's one thing Dick Lupoff understands (with perverse glee) it's the sorry state of the human condition. In this collection you'll find a wide variety of humans whose conditions leave much to be desired. A pit bull owner who's just as nasty as his dog A thief who believes his father-in-law was a real Nazi A dead-end boxer who has come back in a boxing movie A detective named Caligula Foxx who might be Nero Wolfe in drag A crooked corporal whose payoff is death Not only are the storylines original, the writing is indelibly stamped with Dick's vision and voice. Dick's writing talents really can't be defined by the usual means. Yes, he writes science fiction. Yes, he writes fantasy. Yes, he writes mystery. But what he really writes are Lupoffs. Long, short, hilarious, whimsical, dark, mysterious-they're all Lupoffs. Richard A. Lupoff is the author of many books including the popular Lindsey-and-Plum mysteries. The next of these, The Emerald Cat Killer, will be published by St. Martin's Press in October, 2010. His most recent collection of mysteries is Quintet: The Cases of Chase and Delacroix, published by Crippen & Landru.

From the enormously popular Berkeley cheese shop and bakery, a collection of 150 classic recipes along with a history of the store and a cheese primer, all accompanied by 50 photographs. The Cheese Board was there, a hole in the wall with a line out the door, before Chez Panisse was so much as a gleam in my eye. When the restaurant was conceived, I wanted it to be in North Berkeley so the Cheese Board would be nearby, because I knew I would be among friends. -Alice Waters, from the Foreword When a tiny cheese shop opened in Berkeley, California, in 1967, there was little hint of what the store-and the neighborhood-would grow into over the next 30 years. The Cheese Board became a collective a few years later and Chez Panisse opened across the street, giving birth to one of the country's most vibrant food neighborhoods, the epicenter of California's culinary revolution. Equal parts bakery, cheese store, pizzeria, and gathering place, the Cheese Board is a patchwork of the local community, where a passion for good food runs deep. THE CHEESE BOARD presents over 100 recipes for the store's classic breads, pastries, and pizzas, along with a history of the collective and an extensive cheese primer.

Advance Praise for Ivy League Killers Cherry takes readers on a chilling ride as he plants intrigue in all the right places . . . If a rapist, murderer, or sex trafficker is hell-bent on a life of crime, is it injudicious to stop that person ? Young couple Emily and Tom don’t think so, and neither does the secret society that backs them in their pursuits. This anonymous network is composed of likeminded individuals who know that the police are insufficient in stopping these transgressors. Judges are paid off and criminals fall through the cracks. Some readers might squirm at the morality implied in such acts. But Cherry doesn’t declare a conclusive stance on the subject. He will, however, nudge your conscience to disturbing degrees where you might find yourself rooting for the eliminators. . . . [Ivy League] Killers answers many questions Harms [Done to Others] readers didn’t even know they had. Either story can be read first, however, thanks to Cherry’s literary dexterity. —Valerie Brooks is a writer, editor, and book reviewer and the owner of www.TheWriteEdit.com The novel can sometimes be playfully cynical, offsetting the characters’ lethal occupation . . . [AJfter a hit, Emily lovingly tells Tom, “Well done sweetheart. “ The tone, however, is generally earnest, and the back stories for the co-leads provide credible, sympathetic reasons for why they would commit murder. . . Cherry bolsters his tale with a bit of mystery . . . later chapters add suspense when the stakes escalate . . . Killers for hire make a surprisingly charming couple in this straightforward thriller. —Kirkus Reviews

A comprehensive reference guide to male and female serial killers from throughout world history. The World Encyclopedia of Serial Killers is the most comprehensive set of its kind in the history of true crime publishing. Written and compiled by Susan Hall, the four-volume set has more than 1600 entries of male and female serial killers from around the world. Defined by the FBI as a person who murders 3 or more people over a period of time with a hiatus of weeks or months between murders, serial killers have walked among us from the dawn of time as these books will demonstrate. While the entries to these volumes will continue to grow—the FBI estimates that there are at least fifty serial killers operating in the United States at any given time—The World Encyclopedia of Serial Killers is as complete as possible through the end of 2017. The series continues with Volume Three, M-S. The entries include the Machete Murderer Juan Vallejo Corona, Maranhão Boy Mutilator Francisco das Chagas, Night Stalker Richard Ramirez, Rostov Ripper Andrei Romanovych Chikatilo, and Genesee River Killer Arthur John Shawcross. You will find these killers and approximately 475 others in this third book in the series of The World Encyclopedia of Serial Killers.
