O trabalho de Diogo Puchta, que apenas agora vem a lume, é uma contribuição fundamental para compreendermos alguns elementos da história do ensino da Ginástica no Brasil. Perscrutando um período de quase 40 anos, entre os finais do século XIX e o começo do XX, o autor captura a trajetória daquilo que nomeia uma disciplina escolar, sobretudo no que é informada pelas retóricas legitimadoras e pelas prescrições emanadas de políticos e intelectuais do período, mas atento ao seu rebatimento nas práticas escolares. Busca, então, analisar em chave diacrônica as práticas corporais que compunham o arcabouço da disciplina Ginástica, como eram concebidas e geridas, como e por quem eram tratadas nas escolas públicas primárias paranaenses. Trabalhando com documentação variada – relatórios, regulamentos, regimentos e códigos de ensino referentes à instrução pública da época, bem como os compêndios e livros didáticos adotados –, Diogo oferece um quadro bastante rico de uma dimensão local ou regional sobre a construção de uma disciplina escolar. Trata-se de um belo exercício de pesquisa empírica acurada combinado com uma reflexão teórica cuidadosa. As transformações na "economia interna" daquela disciplina emergem da análise que o autor faz da produção e experiência de políticos, intelectuais, inspetores e professores escolares. O resultado é a captura de um plano de produção, circulação, apropriação e uso de ideias, preceitos, princípios, exercícios que demarcavam o lugar de nascimento do que viria a ser chamado Educação Física nos currículos escolares desde então.
