Homage to Catalonia is George Orwell's personal account of his experiences and observations fighting for the POUM militia of the Republican army during the Spanish Civil War. The war was one of the defining events of his political outlook and a significant part of what led him to write in 1946, "Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for Democratic Socialism, as I understand it." The first edition was published in the United Kingdom in 1938. The book was not published in the United States until February 1952, when it appeared with an influential preface by Lionel Trilling. The only translation published in Orwell's lifetime was into Italian, in December 1948. A French translation by Yvonne Davet-with whom Orwell corresponded, commenting on her translation and providing explanatory notes-in 1938-39, was not published until five years after Orwell's death. Book Summary: Orwell served as a private, a corporal (cabo) and-when the informal command structure of the militia gave way to a conventional hierarchy in May 1937-as a lieutenant, on a provisional basis, in Catalonia and Aragon from December 1936 until June 1937. In June 1937, the leftist political party with whose militia he served (the POUM, the Workers' Party of Marxist Unification, an anti-Stalinist communist party) was declared an illegal organisation, and Orwell was consequently forced to flee. Having arrived in Barcelona on 26 December 1936, Orwell told John McNair, the Independent Labour Party's (ILP) representative there, that he had "come to Spain to join the militia to fight against Fascism." He also told McNair that "he would like to write about the situation and endeavour to stir working class opinion in Britain and France." McNair took him to the POUM barracks, where Orwell immediately enlisted. "Orwell did not know that two months before he arrived in Spain, the [Soviet law enforcement agency] NKVD's resident in Spain, Aleksandr Orlov, had assured NKVD Headquarters, 'the Trotskyist organisation POUM can easily be liquidated'-by those, the Communists, whom Orwell took to be allies in the fight against Franco."

Edición definitiva avalada por The Orwell Estate. ENGLISH DESCRIPTION This edition follows the definitive text endorsed by The Orwell Foundation. Without a doubt one of the most important books of the 20th century. Homage to Catalonia is a fundamental work and one of the most famous accounts of the Spanish Civil War by one of the leading writers of the time, and witness to the events. Admired by authors of every age and background, from Connolly and Trilling, to Javier Cercas, Antony Beevor, and Mario Vargas Llosa, Homage to Catalonia is a powerful manifesto from man against ideas and notions that inevitably lead to terror. It is also an important text about the Spanish Civil War, an unparalleled testimony that collects George Orwell’s personal experiences fighting for the POUM militia of the Republican army. The British author arrived in Barcelona at its full revolutionary effervescence in December 1936, but in less than a year he had to leave the POUM militia. The honesty and courage with which Orwell narrates what he experienced make him the epitome of moral writers by excellence. This edition, endorsed by The Orwell Foundation, faithfully follows the definitive text of the author’s complete works, put together by Professor Peter Davison. It also includes a prologue by professor and essayist Miquel Berga, who masterfully reconstructs the book’s editorial history. Miguel Temprano García authored the wonderful Spanish translation, first published in 2011.

Reprint Edition of the 1938 Edition. Homage to Catalonia is George Orwell's personal account of his experiences and observations fighting in the Spanish Civil War for the Republican army. Published in 1938 (about a year before the war ended) with little commercial success, it gained more attention in the 1950s following the success of Orwell's better-known works Animal Farm (1945) and Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949). Covering the period between December 1936 and June 1937, Orwell recounts Catalonia's revolutionary fervor during his training in Barcelona, his boredom on the front lines in Aragon, his involvement in the May Days conflict back in Barcelona on leave, his getting shot in the throat back on the front lines, and his escape to France after the Republican Army was declared an illegal organization. The war was one of the defining events of his political outlook and a significant part of what led him to write in 1946, "Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism, as I understand it."

A new edition of Orwell's early work, showing the origins of his commitment to social justice. A new edition with a new introduction, this is a deeply personal record of Orwell's growing despair and disillusionment with the Spanish Civil War, gathering themes he would later explore to perfection in Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four. Having joined the international leftist forces in Barcelona, Orwell grew frustrated by the repressive totalitarianism of Stalin's brand of communism.

The first ever graphic novel version of Animal Farm - a Times Book of the Year Animal Farm is the story of what happens when the downtrodden animals of Manor Farm overthrow their master, and how their revolution goes horribly wrong. Now George Orwell's dark, timeless fable has been turned into a graphic novel for the very first time, illustrated in full colour by the renowned Brazilian artist Odyr to bring us a whole new work of art. 'This brightly coloured homage to Orwell's timely allegory is heartbreaking and elegant. Odyr's images of animals casting off their bonds and then living with the results of their revolution are painterly and evocative, both loose and illuminating' The New York Times
