This report summarizes the housing situations of low-income persons living in rural areas of Canada, based on a literature review, a statistical review, and twelve case studies that included key informant interviews & examination of local documents. After a review of the methodology used, the report assesses variations in the types of households, housing affordability, housing costs & tenure, and household income in six types of rural communities (growing, stable or slow growth, declining, bedroom, retirement, & northern). This is followed by discussion of the nature of rural housing, including type of housing, ownership, condition, and housing supply. The final sections examine barriers to addressing housing needs in rural areas and identify opportunities to improve housing options for low-income rural dwellers.

Housing assistance in Canada generally consists of subsidies designed to encourage the construction of new, affordable housing. There is interest however, in complementing supply-side subsidies with assistance in the form of a housing allowance for certain households. This research report describes various options for a Canadian housing allowance program, and discusses how to best design, implement and operate such a program.

During the past several decades, the Aboriginal population of Canada has become so urbanized that today, the majority of First Nations and Métis people live in cities. Home in the City provides an in-depth analysis of urban Aboriginal housing, living conditions, issues, and trends. Based on extensive research, including interviews with more than three thousand residents, it allows for the emergence of a new, contemporary, and more realistic portrait of Aboriginal people in Canada’s urban centres. Home in the City focuses on Saskatoon, which has both one of the highest proportions of Aboriginal residents in the country and the highest percentage of Aboriginal people living below the poverty line. While the book details negative aspects of urban Aboriginal life (such as persistent poverty, health problems, and racism), it also highlights many positive developments: the emergence of an Aboriginal middle class, inner-city renewal, innovative collaboration with municipal and community organizations, and more. Alan B. Anderson and the volume’s contributors provide an important resource for understanding contemporary Aboriginal life in Canada.

In the first comprehensive book on the topic since the 1970s, former Toronto mayor John Sewell considers housing issues in Canada. Writing in a style that is accessible and direct, Sewell considers public, private, and social housing. He looks at affordability and need, discusses definitions of good housing and good neighbourhoods, and examines the various approaches that governments have taken since World War II to increase the stock of reasonably priced housing. He shows why these approaches have consumed large amounts of public dollars yet have often failed. Indeed, homelessness is a larger problem in Canadian cities than ever before. In a time of shrinking public expenditures, he proposes the kinds of solutions necessary to ensure that all Canadians are well housed.. As chair of the Metro Toronto Housing Authority in the eighties and, more recently, as chair of the Commission on Planning and Development Reform in Ontario, Sewell has played a unique role in increasing public awareness of housing issues. His thought-provoking analysis will be of interest to all who believe that Canadians deserve affordable housing.

The Changing Image Of Affordable Housing written by Ulduz Maschaykh and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-09 with Architecture categories.

Illustrated by a range of case studies of affordable housing options in Canada, this book examines the liveability and affordability of twenty-first-century residential architecture. Focussing on the architects’ and communities’ commitment to these housing programmes, as well as that of the private building sector, it stresses the importance of the context of the neighbourhoods in which they are placed, which are either in the process of urban transition or already gentrified. In doing so, the book shows how, and to what extent, twenty-first-century dwelling architecture developments can help to create an integrated sense of community, diminish social and demographic exclusions in a neighbourhood and incorporate people’s desires as to what their buildings should look like. This book shows that there are significant architectural projects that help to meet the needs and desires of low- to middle-income households as well as homeowners, and that gentrification does not necessarily lead to the displacement of low-income families and singles if housing policies such as those highlighted in this book are put into place. Moreover, the migration of the middle class can result in a healthy mix of classes out of which everyone can enjoy a peaceful and habitable coexistence.
