"Homing with the Birds" is a book in which one comes into intimate contact with one's feathered friends, to the extent of feeling that they actually have personalities! This is doubtless because Mrs. Porter is a true and devoted friend to them herself, and has been so since her childhood. She says: "Almost my first distinct memory is connected with a bird." and then proceeds to tell how this was upon an occasion when she was willing to deny herself the joy of eating cherries in order that woodpeckers in the neighborhood might not be killed! Many such incidents of the author's childhood are in the book, demonstrating her intense, almost romantic, attachment to the feathered tribes. The book is more than a record of bird life, it is that of a charming young, growing human life deeply concerned with the things of nature. At the same time it is full of information not only delightful but useful for birdlovers and students of natural history and outdoor matters.

How migratory birds can navigate home from their wintering grounds to their breeding sites over hundreds and thousands of kilometres has been an admired mystery over more than a century. Profound advances towards a solution of this problem have been achieved with a model bird, the homing pigeon. This monograph summarizes our current knowledge about pigeon homing, about the birds' application of a sun compass and a magnetic compass, of a visual topographical map within a familiar area and -- most surprisingly -- of an olfactory map using atmospheric chemosignals as indicators of position in distant unfamiliar areas.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1919 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XVII Shall We Pay Our Debt? LL ornithologists have agreed for a long time past that we owed much of our comfort to JL m, the birds. To-day, it is being generally conceded that if every form of bird life were swept from the face of the earth "at one fell swoop" man could not long survive. This will seem extreme to those who have not made a study of the situation, but if anyone having access to cultivated country and villages will keep his eyes open and think out the subject to its ultimate limit, he will see that the destruction of all plant life is inevitable without the work of the birds in its preservation. The most intimate part of my life work among the birds has been at their nesting time, when I was able to see exactly what was collected by the parents in rearing their young. All of my life I have been deeply interested in this subject because much of my life I have been in a position where I was forced to feed and care for young birds personally or to let them die; so for the birds of my location I can speak with authority as to their feeding habits, in so far as they can be followed with the eye or the field glass. It is my self-appointed task to preserve useful bird life, not to take it on any excuse whatever. But going beyond the limits of my work, comes that of the statisticians, who have carefully counted how often birds fed their young in a given time, and who have not hesitated to kill our most exquisite songsters by the dozen in order to analyze the contents of their crops. The general summing up of both branches of investigation results in the verdict that life on this planet would be insupportable without the protection afforded us by the birds against winged pests, bugs, worms, and caterpillars, larvae, aphis, ...

Originally published in 1907. One of the earliest and possibly the most important book ever published on homing pigeons. The well illustrated and detailed chapters include: The Columba Livia - Origin and Production - Lofts and Fittings - Food and Feeding - Interbreeding - Crossing - Mendel's Law Applied to Homing Pigeons - Founding a Loft - Some Physical Characters - Feathers and the Moult - The Homing Instinct - Training - Preparing for Old Bird races - Preparing for Young Bird Races, etc. Many of the earliest pigeon books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Home Farm Books are republishing many of these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

“A noted naturalist explores the centrality of home in the lives of humans and other animals . . . A special treat for readers of natural history” (Kirkus Reviews). Every year, many species make the journey from one place to another, following the same paths and ending up in the same places. Every year since boyhood, the acclaimed scientist and author Bernd Heinrich has done the same, returning to a beloved patch of western Maine woods. Which led him to wonder: What is the biology in humans of this primal pull toward a particular place, and how is it related to animal homing? In The Homing Instinct, Heinrich explores the fascinating mysteries of animal migration: how geese imprint true visual landscape memory; how scent trails are used by many creatures to locate their homes with pinpoint accuracy; and how even the tiniest of songbirds are equipped for solar and magnetic orienteering over vast distances. And he reminds us that to discount our human emotions toward home is to ignore biology itself. “A graceful blend of science and memoir . . . [Heinrich’s] ability to linger and simply be there for the moment when, for instance, an elderly spider descends from a silken strand to take the insect he offers her is the heart of his appeal.” —Julie Zickefoose, The Wall Street Journal “Deep and insightful writing.” —David Gessner, The Washington Post
