Homo Patiens - Approaches to the Patient in the Ancient World is a book about the patients of the Graeco-Roman world, their role in the ancient medical encounters and their relationship to the health providers and medical practitioners of their time. This volume makes a strong claim for the relevance of a patient-centred approach to the history of ancient medicine. Attention to the experience of patients deepens our understanding of ancient societies and their medical markets, and enriches our knowledge of the history of ancient cultures. It is a first step towards shaping a history of the ancient patient’s view, which will be of use not only to ancient historians, students of medical humanities, and historians of medicine, but also to any reader interested in medical ethics.

The book places suffering at the center of its socio-critical considerations, replacing the famous alienation motif of the Frankfurt School. It begins by critiquing the concept of alienation and its long tradition in social and political philosophy, especially in Critical Theory. An orientation towards concrete experiences of suffering then leads to comments on the current and concrete socio-cultural limits of human formability. Through the elaboration of different aspects of suffering, a multilayered focus is provided, which aims to highlight the transcendental and productive sides of suffering. Suffering is thus read as a symptom that refers to something hidden and reveals a particular truth which can provide guidance for personal and social change.

The contributors of this volume demonstrate how a highly developed expertise in interpreting Biblical and cognate literature is a substantial part of the overall discourse on the historical, literary, social, political, and religious dimensions of trauma in past and present. This idea is based on the assumption that trauma is not only a modern concept which derives from 20th century psychiatry: It is an ancient phenomenon already which predates modern discourses. Trauma studies will thus profit from how Theology - specifically Biblical exegesis - and the Humanities deal with trauma in terms of religion, history, sociology, and politics.

This Classic Edition of On the Theory and Therapy of Mental Disorders: An Introduction to Logotherapy and Existential Analysis sees Viktor E. Frankl, bestselling author and founder of logotherapy, introduce his key theories and apply them to work with patients exhibiting symptoms of neurosis. James M. DuBois’ translation of Frankl’s Theorie und Therapie der Neurosen allows English readers to experience this essential text on logotherapy in an invigorating new light. DuBois also provides a new Preface to the book, highlighting the importance of both the original volume and Frankl’s work at large, and framing it within contemporary psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. Throughout the book, Frankl uses his unique logotherapeutic approach to analyse neuroses and their impact. He looks in turn at how neuroses may be informed by psychoses, somatic disorders, and the mental implications of being diagnosed with a physical medical condition, as well as potential psychological, spiritual, and societal causes of neuroses. Masterfully translated and thoroughly annotated, this volume brings Frankl’s trailblazing theories into the 21st century and will be of great interest to psychiatrists and psychotherapists alike.

Wholeness In Hope Care written by Daniel Johannes Louw and has been published by LIT Verlag Münster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with Body, Mind & Spirit categories.

Throughout his life, the apartheid activist, Nelson Mandela (Madiba), maintained, 'In the darkest moment there is always hope. We must never give up'. Hope as a mode of the courage to be (Paul Tillich), points to what the Sociologist Peter Berger calls: signals of transcendence. Wholeness in Hope Care explores the rich tradition of hope in wisdom, philosophy and Christian theology. It connects non-hope/un-hope (Gabriel Marcel: inespoir) to a theology of compassion in soul care (cura animarum). Resurrection hope (theologia resurrectionis) points to the healing of life (cura vitae) and the preservation of land (cura terrae). In order to describe the helping and healing dimension in pastoral caregiving, the term 'promissiotherapy' has been coined. Daniel Johannes Louw was Dean of the faculty of theology at the University of Stellenbosch (2001-2005), President of the International Academy of Practical Theology (IAPT) (2003-2005) and President of the International Council for Pastoral Care and Counselling (ICPPC) (2011-2015). Duties To Others written by Courtney Campbell and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Philosophy categories.

Despite reservoirs of moral discourse about duties in religious communities, professional caregiving traditions, and philosophical perspectives, the dominant moral language in contemporary biomedical ethics is that of `rights'. Duties to Others begins to correct this imbalance in our ethical language through theoretical expositions of the ideas of duty and of the `other', and by applied exemplifications of particular duties to identified others that arise in the context of health care. A pronounced multidisciplinary orientation informs this analysis of our moral call to respond to the needs of others. The essays in this volume offer a stimulating intellectual freshness through a continual engagement of theological, professional, and philosophical understandings of the duties that arise in our relationships with others in medicine, nursing, and social contexts. Duties to Others provides provocative challenges about the terrain of our moral world for both students and professionals in biomedical ethics, medicine, philosophy, and theology.
