Der Autor hat 'Homosexualität im Profifußball' als Thema seiner Studie gewählt, weil der Profifußball als Synonym für Leistungssport in Deutschland ein Spiegelbild der Gesellschaft darstellen kann. Im Gegensatz zur Politik, in der dies schon lange kein Tabuthema mehr ist, wofür der langjährige amtierende Bürgermeister von Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, ein gutes Beispiel bietet, gibt es in der Parallelwelt Fußball nur vereinzelt Profis, die den Mut haben, zu ihrer Sexualität zu stehen. Folgt man den gängigen Statistiken, so müssten sich jedoch auch dort zwischen 5 und 10% der Männer vom eigenen Geschlecht erotisch angezogen fühlen (Blaschke, 2008). Im Laufe der Arbeit wird deutlich, welchen Einfluss der Profifußball auf die Gesellschaft hat und wieso dieser kein Hort der Diskriminierung sein darf. In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden die möglichen Ursachen untersucht, die zu einem Versteckspiel der Leistungssportler führen, die Idole der Gesellschaft sind und doch die Konsequenzen eines Outings fürchten müssen. Ein passendes Beispiel ist der ehemalige Jugendauswahlspieler Marcus Urban, der in seinem Buch 'Versteck Spieler' die Konflikte darlegt, die einen Menschen begleiten, der nicht zu seiner Sexualität stehen kann, will oder darf. Mit seiner Offenheit stellt er einen Einzelfall dar. Das Thema Homosexualität wird in verschiedenen Facetten dargestellt werden, besonders mit Bezug auf die Entwicklung, die es in der deutschen Gesellschaft genommen hat. Im Fokus steht dabei vor allen Dingen der männliche Fußballsport. Darauf aufbauend wird der Autor auf das Geschlecht als Konstrukt eingehen, mit besonderem Augenmerk auf die Gender-Forschung, da das vorgefertigte Geschlechterbild einen Einblick darauf geben könnte, weshalb Homosexualität im Fußball im Gegensatz zur Politik und anderen Bereichen der Gesellschaft immer noch ein Tabuthema ist. Auch wird das Erscheinungsbild „Stadion“ genauso Beachtung finden wie das Verhalten der Fans untereinander und im Dialog mit den Spielern auf 'dem Platz'. Wie bereits erwähnt, sollen auch wichtige Meinungsmacher in Fußball und Medien, sogenannte Experten, nicht unberücksichtigt bleiben. Es kann vermutet werden, dass hier eine Ursache für die intolerante Haltung im Profifußball zu suchen ist. Die vielen Kampagnen, die sich dem Thema der Enttabuisierung von Homosexualität in der Fußballwelt verschrieben haben, oftmals unter Mithilfe des Deutschen Fußball Bundes, sind politische Versuche mit diesem Thema umzugehen und werden [...]

In anderen Teilen der Gesellschaft haben sich viele Berühmtheiten geoutet, ohne zu fürchten, ihr Ruf bzw. ihre Karriere könne zu Schaden kommen. Doch warum hält der Fußball beharrlich an überkommenen Werten und Normen fest und weigert sich gesellschaftliche Wandlungsprozesse anzuerkennen? Einen neuen Diskurs eröffnete 2013 das Outing Robbie Rogers als erster Fußballprofi einer westlichen Majorleague. Diese Arbeit soll weniger zu einer Genderdebatte beitragen oder eine Ideologie zu dieser Thematik vertreten. Vielmehr wird hier der Fußball als „Arena der heteronormativen Männlichkeit“ mit aktuellen gesellschaftlichen Analysen um das Feld Fußball verglichen, die darüber Aufschluss geben, ob sich hier, besonders durch das Outing des Fußballspielers Rogers, ein Kulturwandel vollziehen könnte.
