Many straight Americans would never embrace homosexuals as neighbors, co-workers, or friends. Still less would they accept as equals those transgendered individuals who work the streets to provide themselves with drug money. This book seeks to change that perception. It celebrates the lives of Shontae, China, Keisha, Detra, and Monique, five Afro-American gay hustlers who struggle to survive and to maintain a life of dignity and value in the face of their drug use and criminal activity. As individuals they vary in terms of background, the manner in which they entered the transgendered world, and the nature of their initiation into the drug subculture. None of them has escaped the ravages of urban decline, crime, drugs, and poverty that accompany life in an inner city, but by the same token, none of them has capitulated to the stresses with which they live. It is impossible to read these accounts and not come away emotionally drained. As Monique explains, their lives take place in a world of chances. "You take a chance on living or dying, on being hurt or not being hurt, a chance on finding a friend or finding an enemy." It is from this world that their voices speak so eloquently about their families, hustling, sexuality, sexual abuse, friendship, and intimacy. By letting these women speak, Leon E. Pettiway evokes questions and encourages discussion and a re-evaluation of those who are labeled as deviant. Pettiway reaches beyond academic convention to offer a view with depth and emotion that mere statistics could never provide. While the poverty and often destructive lifestyle of these women may be gut-wrenching, their experiences reveal joy, pain, and the profound strength of the human spirit with which we can all identify. These lives have much to teach us about ourselves and those we label as "other."

Artists Performers And Black Masculinity In The Haitian Diaspora written by Jana Evans Braziel and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-06-27 with Art categories.

Jana Evans Braziel examines how Haitian diaspora writers, performance artists, and musicians address black masculinity through the Haitian Creole concept of gwo nègs, or "big men." She focuses on six artists and their work: writer Dany Laferrière, director Raoul Peck, rap artist Wyclef Jean, artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, drag queen performer and poet Assotto Saint, and queer drag king performer Dréd (a.k.a. Mildréd Gerestant). For Braziel, these individuals confront the gendered, sexualized, and racialized boundaries of America's diaspora communities and openly resist "domestic" imperialism that targets immigrants, minorities, women, gays, and queers. This is a groundbreaking study at the intersections of gender and sexuality with race, ethnicity, nationality, and diaspora.

Brian Edwards may be a celebrated talent executive, multi-award winning producer, writer and occasional performer, but to friends such as Cindy Crawford and Whoopi Goldberg, he is known quite simply as Miss Thang. The late, great Joan Rivers wrote the foreword and Crawford penned the introduction to his recent autobiography, “Enter Miss Thang,” (published by Archway Publishing) which became a national best seller and ends the year as the most honored LGBT Non-Fiction Book of 2014. “Enter Miss Thang” received top honors for Best Humor and Best Gay & Lesbian Non-Fiction at The USA Best Book Awards, (presented by USA Book News), which rounded out the current book awards season, where Edwards also earned a total of ten national and international awards in various categories such as Humor, in addition to dominating the field of LGBT Non-Fiction with wins at The International Book Awards, The Beverly Hills Book Awards and The National Indie Excellence Awards, where it was also named Best Autobiography of the Year. "Brian is the perfect example of a true friend—and to so many. Enter Miss Thang is his story, filled with humor and passion for his work and the people he loves the most. A diva indeed, but it's a title he's definitely earned by managing to survive almost thirty years in Hollywood, cushioned by intelligence, flamboyance, gut instinct, loyalty, and, most of all, his sense of humor." —Vanessa Williams, multi-platinum recording artist and star of stage, television, and film "In this book, Brian Edwards sets an example of giving and commitment that creates a standard for all of us to follow as to what a friend should truly be. I'm so proud of his life and legacy." —Sam Haskell, former worldwide head of television at the William Morris Agency "Brian Edwards is my favorite diva of all time. I have worked with him on many Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremonies, which have given us both tears of happiness and tears from the laughter he brings out in me when working on these legendary events." —Ana Martinez, producer for Hollywood Walk of Fame "Brian is one of the kindest, funniest, and most supportive people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. He always takes good care of me stateside, like my fairy godmother! It's clear to see just how treasured, loved and respected Brian is and deservedly so." —Matt Cardle, multi-platinum recording artist "Having gotten to know Brian over the years I have come to realize his own personal story is as interesting as those of many of his famous friends and clients. He's fiercely loyal, outrageously funny, and generous to a fault." —Pam Tillis, CMA and Grammy Award–winning recording artist "Enter Miss Thang encapsulates more than a man's wild and wonderful adventures in Hollywood, but reveals a dynamic and brilliant colleague and friend with a zest for life and all things fun and fabulous." —Mirjana Van Blaricom, president of the International Press Academy "I have known Brian for almost twenty years. His enthusiasm and support of talent in this industry is incomparable. No one even comes close! In recent years, researchers have considerably expanded our understanding of the experiences of students of color and of students who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (ie. Queer), but what of the students and educators who live and teach at the intersection of race and sexuality? By combining autobiographical accounts with qualitative and quantitative research on queer students of different racial backgrounds, these essays not only trouble the ways we think about the intersections of race and sexuality, they also offer theoretical insights and educational strategies to educators committed to bringing about change.

Kin written by Crystal Williams and has been published by MSU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-03-31 with Poetry categories.

In her first book-length collection of poetry, Crystal Williams utilizes memory and music as she lyrically weaves her way through American culture, pointing to the ways in which alienation, loss, and sensed "otherness" are corollaries of recent phenomena. Williams writes about being adopted by an interracial couple, a jazz pianist/Ford Foundry worker and a school psychologist, and how that has affected her development as an African American woman. She tries to work out the answers to many difficult questions: in what way do African American artists define themselves? What do they owe the culture and what does it owe them? To what extent does our combined national memory inform our individual selves? These poems are steeped in the black literary tradition. They are brimming over with the oral tradition that Williams perfected while spending years on the poetry "slam" circuit. This, combined with her musical upbringing, give the collection not only a sense of urgency, but also a rhythm, a breath all its own. Kin tackles not only racial issues, but also the troubling realities of violent acts that can occur, especially in our inner cities. But more importantly, the landscape that Williams creates offers readers an alternative to the racial/political dichotomy in which we all live. Overall, the book resonates with a message of reconciliation that will leave the reader uplifted.
