Honeybees are a crucial part of our food chain. As they gather nectar from flowers to make sweet honey, these bees also play an important role in pollination, helping some plants produce fruit. But large numbers of honeybees are disappearing every year . . . and no one knows why. Is a fungus killing them? Could a poor diet be the cause? What about changes to bees' natural habitat? In this real-life science mystery, scientists and beekeepers are working to answer these questions . . . and save the world's honeybees before it's too late.

The title of this book reveals all: Jay Evans approaches science and life with clarity and optimism. Every essay in this book is concise yet funny, and rich in content. Each cleverly-worded chapter uncovers exciting findings from complicated research. Some topics covered in these 34 short essays include how bees' fat bodies may hold clues to new mite control strategies (the "Fats Domino Effect"), an aerial view of helicopter beekeepers and burned out foragers, why bees drink dirty water, chasmogamy in soybeans, "trait rot", genetic signatures described as chords composed of eight genetic notes, and winter bees as the third worker form. The essay "Magic Bullets for Mites" is a great example of Jay's ability to communicate complex topics with compelling, accessible prose. Even though he muses that "we are attempting to manage a social organism that is affected by rules we do not yet fully understand" Jay remains firmly rooted in the #Beeoptimism movement: for his scientific mind, the unknown is full of possibilities. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and devoured it in one sitting, although I recommend savoring it more slowly. Marla Spivak St. Paul, Minnesota

A fresh and fascinating look at caterpillars gives new meaning to the words “line leader”—and ushers kids into the process of scientific discovery—in this first book in the Discovery Chronicles by a biologist and award-winning children’s author. This is a story about remarkable creatures, inquisitive people, and fascinating conversations. The creatures? Pine processionary caterpillars with mysterious group habits. The people? Jean Henri Fabre and, many years later, Terrence Fitzgerald—scientists with big questions about the behavior of these caterpillars. And the conversations? The conversations span lifetimes, as one researcher continues a dialogue started by the other. In this playful, candid, and accessible book for young readers, biologist Loree Griffin Burns captures the unique leader-follower behavior of pine processionary caterpillars through a glimpse into the “ask, test, repeat” nature of the scientific process—and shows how that process creates one long line of questioning and learning. Back matter includes more details about the two scientists as well as a glossary, bibliography, source notes, and suggestions for further reading.

Want to start keeping honey bees? If you are struggling to get started in beekeeping, you know it costs a ton of money to buy all the equipment. Shipping charges are increasing every year. Costs continue to go up. Bees, in certain times during the season, are in short supply. But during the spring, you can line up to acquire your bees for "free!"Yes, the bees are free but there will always be a cost in terms of your time and motivation. But the good news is those costs are relative. And the GREAT news is that you can catch swarms of “free” bees without incurring the out-of-pocket cash costs of buying a package of bees or a nuc. You can catch free bees to replace winter dead-outs. You can catch free bees to expand your apiary. You can catch free bees to increase the number of locations where you keep bees or even expand your hives to start a pollination service. In a nutshell, you don't have to buy bees and incur the out-of-pocket expenses that hold a lot of hopeful people back from enjoying a wonderful hobby that holds tremendous business potentials. If that's enough information, I encourage you to order this book. If you're just mildly curious, keep reading.Like a lot of people, we usually have more time than money and the bees are out there for the expense of our time. I've been keeping honey bees since 1981. This book is about my experiences finding, catching and keeping free bees. With this book and the information within, you'll likewise be able to position yourself to receive free bees and save a bunch of money. Or at least you won't have to shell out those hard earned dollars to buy bees. And as you peruse this manuscript, let me give you some great news: never before have there been so many opportunities for free bees. First, the horror stories coming out of the southern United States with respect to “Africanized,” or “killer” bees has the general public on high alert. The fear of honeybees, ANY honeybee, is at an all-time high (though I think this fear is rather senseless and irrational). When people see bees, they want someone else to deal with them, and deal with them NOW! And every time I rescue a swarm, I'm bombarded with questions, “Are those the killer bees?”Second, with the loss of honeybees to Colony Collapse Disorder, or CCD for short, never has there been a time when people do not want to kill honeybees. They believe there is a shortage of honeybees (a debatable topic skewed by selective reporting from our news media). They want to give the honeybee every opportunity to survive. But not in their backyard. And this is kind of a paradoxical irony: They don't want to kill the bees, but they don't want them around. The bottom line comes to the reality that the general public is looking for people, beekeepers like you and me, to come remove and retrieve honeybees and take them away. Never before has the opportunity for beekeepers been greater than now. The general public goes crazy when they find a swarm of honeybees and they'll make fifteen phone calls looking for someone to take the bees off their hands. It would be easier to kill the bees, but there is a new thread woven into the public consciousness that recognizes it's just wrong to do so.The result is more people in the general population are looking for specialized people (beekeepers like you and me) to come and get rid of their bees. People hail you as a hero! I like doing this because I get free bees out of the deal! This manuscript is about finding those opportunities so people call you. You can acquire a bunch of free bees with a little effort and a little time. I have done this, and I'll show you how you can, too. There are many ways to collect free bees, and ultimately, you'll have to choose the method that works best for you. I'll explain all those details in this book.

The sea covers to-day what was once the Duchy of Clarides. No trace of the town or the castle remains. But when it is calm there can be seen, it is said, within the circumference of a mile, huge trunks of trees standing on the bottom of the sea. A spot on the banks, which now serves as a station for the customhouse officers, is still called "The Tailor's Booth," and it is quite probable that this name is in memory of a certain Master Jean who is mentioned in this story. The sea, which encroaches year by year, will soon cover this spot so curiously named. Such changes are in the nature of things. The mountains sink in the course of ages, and the depths of the seas, on the contrary, rise until their shells and corals are carried to the regions of clouds and ice. Nothing endures. The face of land and sea is for ever changing. Tradition alone preserves the memory of men and places across the ages and renders real to us what has long ceased to exist. In telling you of Clarides I wish to take you back to times that have long since vanished. Thus I begin: The Countess of Blanchelande having placed on her golden hair a little black hood embroidered with pearls.... But before proceeding I must beg very serious persons not to read this. It is not written for them. It is not written for grave people who despise trifles and who always require to be instructed. I only venture to offer this to those who like to be entertained, and whose minds are both young and gay. Only those who are amused by innocent pleasures will read this to the end. Of these I beg, should they have little children, that they will tell them about my Honey-Bee. I wish this story to please both boys and girls and yet I hardly dare to hope it will. It is too frivolous for them and, really, only suitable for old-fashioned children. I have a pretty little neighbour of nine whose library I examined the other day. I found many books on the microscope and the zoophytes, as well as several scientific story-books. One of these I opened at the following lines: "The cuttle-fish Sepia Officinalis is a cephalopodic mollusc whose body includes a spongy organ containing a chylaqueous fluid saturated with carbonate of lime." My pretty little neighbour finds this story very interesting. I beg of her, unless she wishes me to die of mortification, never to read the story of Honey-Bee.
