Bruce Herschensohn utilizes transcribed interviews to tell the story of one of the most important events of this generation: the taking over of a political entity through a 99-year-old treaty. Herschensohn emphasizes the irony of the Chinese government coming to Hong Kong, the majority of whose people had fled from that same government. Throughout the book, Herschensohn seeks to record for history the words of many leading and varied interests in Hong Kong at the time of handover. Hong Kong at the Handover will be of interest to students and scholars of Asian studies and foreign affairs.

The idea of ‘national identity’ is an ambiguous one for Hong Kong. Returned to the national embrace of China on 1 July 1997 after 150 years as a British colony, the concept of national identity and what it means to "belong to a nation" is a matter of great tension and contestation in Hong Kong. Written by three academic specialists on Hong Kong cultural identity, social history, and mass media, this book explores the processes through which the people of Hong Kong are "learning to belong to a nation" by examining their relationship with the Chinese nation and state in the recent past, present, and future. It considers the complex meanings of and debates over national identity in Hong Kong over the past fifty years and especially during the last decade following Hong Kong’s return to China. It also places these arguments within a larger, global perspective, to ask what Hong Kong can teach us about national identity and its potential transformations. Multidisciplinary in its approach, Hong Kong and China explores national identity in terms of theory, mass media, survey date, ethnography and history, and will appeal to students and scholars of Chinese history, cultural studies, and nationalism.

Through excerpts from the earliest English language newspapers in Hong Kong, accompanied by Solomon Bard's insightful comments, Voices From the Past provides unique glimpses into Hong Kong's history. Illustrated with interesting photographs, chiefly from the Hong Kong Museum of History's photographic library, the pages bring Hong Kong's colonial past vividly to life. The newspaper excerpts, in chronological order, are faithful to the original text, reproducing its quaint prose and spelling and even occasional errors. Focusing mainly on Hong Kong, the excerpts also touch on Macao, mainland China and the rest of the world. They reflect the changes over the years in language, style of writing, even in humour. Of special interest are the public responses to the many inventions which today we take for granted, such as electric lighting, the motor car, or the first attempts at flying. Most importantly, they reveal the gradual changes in Hong Kong's colonial attitudes as these slowly adjust to the new contemporary values and social and political changes.

In 1898, Great Britain leased the largest part of Hong Kong from China for ninety-nine years and added to the two sections that they held in perpetuity. In 1980, the two countries began negotiations for the return of all of Hong Kong back to China. Great Britain wanted another ninety-nine-year lease. The People's Republic of China would only accept the return of all of Hong Kong. In the negotiations that followed, China prevailed, and it was agreed that all of Hong Kong would be returned to China. Hong Kong and PRC transition teams had to be created in order to plan for the transition. A UN team was also created to mediate any roadblocks. Office space and housing had to be found for all the personnel. Great Britain felt defeated and demoralized. They wanted to leave a legacy that would last forever before they left. They decided to build the biggest, most modern, most efficient airport ever built as their legacy, even though there were many objections. The biggest drawback was the airport must be completed by June 30, 1997, an impossible task. Even though a site for the airport still had to be selected and large amounts of money had to be raised and large numbers of labor and materials had to be brought in, British and Hong Kong governments pulled out all the stops, and they would do everything in their power to have the airport completed on time. Unknown to anyone on the project, a group of wealthy Hong Kong businessmen was against the handover. They planned to do everything in their power to prevent the return of Hong Kong to China, including disrupting the airport project.

A Profile of Hong Kong provides a detailed history of colonialism in Hong Kong that still reverberates today. Despite this tumultuous history, there are many things that make Hong Kong special and worth fighting for. For over 100 years, the Hong Kong people have been fighting for liberty despite the constant oppression from other countries. Bruce Herschensohn shows how years of riots and protests demonstrate the resilience of the Hong Kong people and the determination to make their country belong to them. With compelling firsthand accounts, A Profile of Hong Kong explores the history of this political entity from a 99-year treaty to the handover to the recent powerful protests for liberty. Herschensohn emphasizes the irony of the Chinese government coming to Hong Kong, the majority of whose people had fled from that same government, and how these very people are once again facing oppression from this repressive government.Herschensohn includes through descriptions of the changes for Hong Kong people that were put into place 100 years ago as well as descriptions of major international figures in the complicated history of Hong Kong. While there are large effects of other countries on Hong Kong, Hong Kong has also had effects on other countries. “Once you have visited Hong Kong. it would never stop visiting you.”

On July 1, 1997, the United Kingdom handed over Hong Kong to China, marking the end of its 99-year lease on the colony. The transfer gave the Chinese government sovereignty over one of the most powerful international financial centers and one of the world's most famous ports. For Hong Kong's six million residents, many of whom fled Communist rule in China, the impending change has left them uncertain of their fate. The prospect of Hong Kong, China, is first examined here from a historical perspective, concentrating on its 100 years as a British Crown Colony, and then its recovery from Japanese occupation in World War ll and subsequent development into a financial powerhouse. The primary focus is then on the period since 1979, when discussions of Hong Kong's future began in earnest between the People's Republic of China and the United Kingdom, and the preparations that the virtual city-state is undertaking for the changeover.

The compelling story of the inescapable return of Hong Kong to China, published for the 25th anniversary of the handover British Hong Kong ended in the last minutes of 30 June 1997. Diplomacy Ends at Midnight traces the extraordinary twists and turns of Hong Kong's long drawn out, but unavoidable, reunion with China, when its 99-year leasehold on much of the colony's territory expired. 25 years ago, Britain did not want to return Hong Kong to its once and future owner, and most Hong Kongers didn't want them to either, but the choice was not theirs to make. Through exceptional archival research and interviews with many of the participants, Dalena Wright traces the intricate diplomacy by which the British sought to resist and then ultimately had to accept the inevitable reversion. The book tells the story of governors, prime ministers, presidents and Chinese leaders who believed for a century that ownership of the tiny entrepot was worth diplomatic standoffs. And when there were no more quarrels to be had, it explains how in the final years British diplomats and their political masters managed the reversion they had not wanted. For 99 years, while they waited for midnight, China and Britain - often as adversaries but occasionally as collaborators - watched Hong Kong grow into a glittering, world-class city. In the end it became a trophy that neither wanted the other to own. How Britain won and lost Hong Kong is the subject of this compelling new history.
