Il Quattrocento è il secolo delle riforme ospedaliere, avviate in numerose città italiane per superare le inadeguatezze delle tradizionali pratiche caritative del medioevo e fronteggiare con diversi strumenti le emergenze sociali e sanitarie di quel periodo. Anche Vicenza partecipò ai processi di riforma, ristrutturando l’articolazione della sua rete assistenziale, grazie soprattutto all’intervento del patriziato urbano, che impostò il governo dei maggiori ospedali secondo criteri “manageriali”. Nel XV secolo la ricerca del bonum commune trovò così espressione in un modo nuovo e razionale di intendere, finanziare ed erogare la carità, conversando con gli attori pubblici e privati della scena urbana: un modo nuovo ma non rivoluzionario, in cui confluivano sentimenti antichi e recenti, come pietas cristiana, religiosità civica e tutela dello status quo cetuale.

Florence, the celebrated city-republic, dominates the historiography of medieval Italy still today. The birth and growth of the Mendicant Orders paralleled the rise of urban Europe. As attention to medieval cities has increased, so too the history of the Dominican Order has constituted a major field of study, since the Dominicans were at the forefront of the cultural and religious life of Medieval cities. The combination of these two traditions of studies precipitates a particularly fruitful research field: the reciprocal influences and interactions between the activities of Dominican intellectuals and the making of Florentine cultural identity. The essays collected in this volume explore various facets of such an interaction. Without presuming to be exhaustive, these contributions restore the complexity of the relationship between the Dominicans and the city of Florence, as well as the communal society in the broadest sense of the term.

Nei secoli XII-XIII, quando in Italia nacquero i comuni cittadini, il mondo contadino conobbe profondi mutamenti, e le comunità rurali, sempre più popolose e organizzate, si imposero come interlocutori nella dialettica fra comuni e signorie rurali grazie soprattutto all’affermarsi di nuove élites locali. Il volume offre una lettura critica di questa dialettica alla luce della ricca documentazione relativa al villaggio di Sabbion, presso Cologna Veneta, ai margini orientali del contado veronese. La documentazione, conservata negli archivi di San Giorgio in Braida di Verona, detentrice della signoria su Sabbion, ha permesso di analizzare nel dettaglio e in chiave comparativa i principali mutamenti socioeconomici e politici di una società ridotta e omogenea, ma dotata di una sua agency.

Considerati a giusto titolo come una delle eredità più importanti del Medioevo, i castelli sono sempre più spesso oggetto di indagini che, condotte da studiosi appartenenti a vari ambiti disciplinari, beneficiano del fondamentale apporto dell’archeologia medievale. Un caso esemplare in tal senso è costituito dal castello di Carbonana, che, analizzato dal punto di vista materiale, documentario e storico-artistico, si è rivelato un sorprendente luogo di incontro tra macrostoria e microstoria. Recentemente restaurato, e dunque ancor meglio visibile percorrendo la strada di fondovalle che da secoli collega Gubbio a Umbertide, il castrum Carbonane figurava già nel 1192 nel privilegio con cui Celestino III confermava al vescovo Bentivoglio il possesso di alcuni siti incastellati collocati a presidio del territorio eugubino. Con il venire meno della signoria vescovile, ad avvicendarsi furono due importanti lignaggi cittadini: i Gabrielli del ramo di Frontone e i Porcelli, di origine fiorentina. E furono proprio questi ultimi a legare indissolubilmente l’onomastica familiare al castello che ne aveva consacrato l’ascesa sociale, divenendo così, nei secoli, i conti di Carbonana.
