The fifteenth century is the century of hospital reforms, started in numerous Italian cities in order to overcome the inadequacies of traditional charitable practices of the Middle Ages and to face the social and health emergencies of that period with the help of different tools. Vicenza also participated in the reform process, restructuring the organisation of its care network, especially thanks to the intervention of the urban patriciate, which ruled the government of the major hospitals according to "managerial" criteria. In the fifteenth century the search for the bonum commune (common good) thus found expression in a new and rational way of understanding, financing and dispensing charity, conversing with public and private actors of the urban scene: a new but not so revolutionary way, in which ancient and recent feelings converged, such as Christian pietas, civic religiosity and protection of the social class' status quo.

Il Quattrocento è il secolo delle riforme ospedaliere, avviate in numerose città italiane per superare le inadeguatezze delle tradizionali pratiche caritative del medioevo e fronteggiare con diversi strumenti le emergenze sociali e sanitarie di quel periodo. Anche Vicenza partecipò ai processi di riforma, ristrutturando l’articolazione della sua rete assistenziale, grazie soprattutto all’intervento del patriziato urbano, che impostò il governo dei maggiori ospedali secondo criteri “manageriali”. Nel XV secolo la ricerca del bonum commune trovò così espressione in un modo nuovo e razionale di intendere, finanziare ed erogare la carità, conversando con gli attori pubblici e privati della scena urbana: un modo nuovo ma non rivoluzionario, in cui confluivano sentimenti antichi e recenti, come pietas cristiana, religiosità civica e tutela dello status quo cetuale.

Although there is a rich historiography on Enlightenment Tuscany in Italian as well as French and German, the principle Anglophone works are Eric Cochrane’s Tradition and Enlightenment in the Tuscan Academies (1961) and his Enlightenment Florence in the Forgotten Centuries (1973). It is high time to revisit the Tuscan Enlightenment. This volume brings together an international group of scholars with the goal of putting to rest the idea that Florence ceased to be interesting after the Renaissance. Indeed, it is partly the explicit dialogue between Renaissance and Enlightenment that makes eighteenth-century Tuscany so interesting. This enlightened age looked to the past. It began the Herculean project of collecting, editing, and publishing many of the manuscripts that today form the bedrock of any serious study of Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio, Machiavelli, Vasari, Galileo, and other Tuscan writers. This was an age of public libraries, projects of cultural restoration, and the emergence of the Uffizi as a public art gallery, complemented by a science museum in Peter Leopold’s reign whose relics can still be visited in the Museo Galileo and La Specola.

Benjamin G. Kohl (1938-2010) taught at Vassar College from 1966 till his retirement as Andrew W. Mellon Professor of the Humanities in 2001. His doctoral research at The Johns Hopkins University was directed by Frederic C. Lane, and his principal historical interests focused on northern Italy during the Renaissance, especially on Padua and Venice. His scholarly production includes the volumes Padua under the Carrara, 1318-1405 (1998), and Culture and Politics in Early Renaissance Padua (2001), and the online database The Rulers of Venice, 1332-1524 (2009). The database is eloquent testimony of his priority attention to historical sources and to their accessibility, and also of his enthusiasm for collaboration and sharing among scholars.

This volume is the first one in a collection connected to the PRIN project on Ruling in hard times. Patterns of Power and practices of government in the making of Carolingian Italy. Its focus lays on bishops and their networks of relationships in late-8th and 9th-century Italy. The episcopal contribution to the inclusion of the Lombard kingdom in the Carolingian social and political landscape is especially analyzed from the perspective of the cultural exchanges (of ideas, texts, and manuscripts) that bishops created or used to carry out their public and pastoral duties. Il volume affronta un tema non comune nella medievistica: la prigione e i suoi abitanti. Nel carcere medievale i prigionieri – incarcerati prima della sentenza, oppure rimasti “dentro” perché indebitati, socialmente pericolosi, riconosciuti colpevoli di un delitto – non erano abbandonati a loro stessi; delle loro esigenze si facevano carico le famiglie, la Chiesa, i laici devoti, gli stessi pubblici poteri. Nel caso di Milano il sistema carcerario e il rapporto tra carcerati, giustizia e misericordia assume sfumature peculiari. Le prigioni (anche private) sono numerose e disperse nella città: la più grande è un carcere-ospedale, che rinchiude certo, ma lascia intendere che è utile (per motivi economici) aiutare la sopravvivenza del reo e il suo ritorno in società. I milanesi del Quattrocento sono poi consci dei rischi di abbandonare i detenuti (uomini e donne) a una giustizia che, per i suoi costi, tutela solo i più forti. Ecco dunque i Protettori dei carcerati: utili non solo ai deboli rinchiusi in carcere, ma anche al dominus, che li sostiene. Interessato a porre rimedio agli eccessi del sistema, il duca è infatti anche (e forse soprattutto) desideroso di mostrarsi misericordioso, e in quanto tale superiore alla legge. Indagare la condizione dei carcerati si rivela dunque un modo per cogliere non solo le dinamiche di esclusione e di inclusione sociale pertinenti al controllo della devianza, ma anche i meccanismi di relazione tra governanti e governati nel tardo medioevo.

Scopo di questo libro è esplorare le trasformazioni nei funzionamenti del potere nelle campagne del regno d’Italia lungo il cinquantennio a cavallo del 1100, e più in particolare il processo di affermazione e di cristallizzazione della signoria rurale. L’indagine si sviluppa attraverso la ricostruzione non solo delle strutture del potere sugli uomini e sullo spazio, e delle connesse morfologie sociali, ma anche del sistema di comunicazione politica a livello locale. Lo scoppio delle guerre civili connesse con la “lotta per le Investiture”, dopo il 1080, si traduce infatti in una netta riconfigurazione della matrice socio-politica, con trasformazione sia delle pratiche del potere locale, sia degli strumenti della comunicazione politica e della relativa documentazione. Il caso italiano offre in questo senso una nuova prospettiva sul grande problema storiografico, ancora aperto, della “rivoluzione feudale” nel contesto europeo.

Studiare gli archivi dei signori rurali del Mezzogiorno d’Italia tra XIV e XV secolo significa cogliere la natura del loro potere, il modo in cui esso si diceva. Il volume, che accoglie le sollecitazioni della storiografia più recente, è fondato sulla repertoriazione di importanti complessi documentari dell’Archivio di Stato di Napoli, fondo Sommaria (Relevi, con i dossier per la successione feudale; Dipendenze, I, Conti erariali dei feudi e Diversi, con registri signorili pervenuti al Fisco per confisca o morte senza eredi). Sono inoltre oggetto di studio i cartulari e le platee calabresi, tipici «libri-archivio» che inglobano repertori più antichi (famiglie Ruffo e Sanseverino), e le pergamene degli Albertini di Nola. La ricchezza informativa dei fondi archivistici e dei registri presi in considerazione consente agli autori di concentrarsi sulla sostanza dei poteri signorili, la tipologia delle scritture prodotte dai signori e per i signori, la loro gestione del patrimonio, le strategie di costruzione della memoria.
