Scopo di questo libro è esplorare le trasformazioni nei funzionamenti del potere nelle campagne del regno d’Italia lungo il cinquantennio a cavallo del 1100, e più in particolare il processo di affermazione e di cristallizzazione della signoria rurale. L’indagine si sviluppa attraverso la ricostruzione non solo delle strutture del potere sugli uomini e sullo spazio, e delle connesse morfologie sociali, ma anche del sistema di comunicazione politica a livello locale. Lo scoppio delle guerre civili connesse con la “lotta per le Investiture”, dopo il 1080, si traduce infatti in una netta riconfigurazione della matrice socio-politica, con trasformazione sia delle pratiche del potere locale, sia degli strumenti della comunicazione politica e della relativa documentazione. Il caso italiano offre in questo senso una nuova prospettiva sul grande problema storiografico, ancora aperto, della “rivoluzione feudale” nel contesto europeo.

The nEU-Med project is part of the Horizon 2020 programme, in the ERC Advanced project category. It began in October 2015 and the University of Siena is the host institution of the project. The project is focussed upon two Tuscan riverine corridors leading from the Gulf of Follonica in the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Colline Metallifere. It aims to document and analyze the form and timeframe of economic growth in this part of the Mediterranean, which took place between the 7th and the 12thc. Central to this is an understanding of the processes of change in human settlements, in the natural and farming landscapes in relation to the exploitation of resources, and in the implementation of differing political strategies. This volume presents the multi-disciplinary research focussed upon the key site of the project, Vetricella, and its territory. Vetricella is thought to be the site of Valli, a royal property in the Tuscan march. It is the only Early Medieval property to be extensively studied in Italy. Located on Italy’s Tyrrhenian coast, the archaeology and history of this site provide new insights on estate management, metal production and wider Mediterranean relations in the later first millennium. Apart from reports on the archaeology, the finds from excavations and environmental studies, three essays consider the wider European historical and archaeological context of Vetricella. Future monographs will feature studies by members of the project team on aspects of Vetricella, its finds and territory.

In The Seigneurial Transformation, Alessio Fiore discusses the transformation of the fabric of power in the kingdom of Italy in the period between the late eleventh century and the early twelfth century. The study analyses the major socio-political change of this period, the crisis of royal and public structures, and the development of seigneurial powers, using as a starting point the structures of power over men and land, and the discourses about the exercise of local power. This period was marked by a rapid reshaping of the structures of local power; while the outbreak of civil wars in the 1080s did not imply a clear-cut rupture with the past, it led to a staggering acceleration of pre-existing dynamics, with a reconfiguration of the matrix of power, in turn expressed in a transformation both of the instruments of local political communications and of the practices of power.

Una “visione catastrofista” è stata a lungo dominante negli studi sull’impatto socio-economico dell’epidemia di Peste Nera del 1347-48 e, più in generale, degli avvenimenti della prima metà del Trecento. Il peso di un modello così forte è ancora rilevante nel dibattito storico, sebbene una gran parte degli studiosi sia da tempo coinvolta in una rivalutazione totale di questo periodo. I cambiamenti intervenuti nel passaggio tra il XIII e la seconda metà del XIV secolo sembrerebbero aver profondamente influito sulla sfera “materiale” della vita della popolazione medievale. È sembrato quindi naturale interrogare le fonti archeologiche – e le ceramiche in particolare – su specifiche questioni legate ai consumi, agli standard di vita e alla mobilità sociale. La possibilità di confronto statistico costituisce il principio guida del volume che, attraverso una serie di metodi di analisi appositamente elaborati, tenta di esplorare le possibilità offerte da un approccio di tipo contestuale-comparativo anche su scala internazionale. In Toscana, oltre al lavoro sistematico sulla ceramica del Castello di Montecchio Vesponi, sono stati posti sotto la lente d’ingrandimento i contesti editi di Via dei Castellani (Firenze), degli ex-Laboratori Gentili (Pisa) e dei castelli di Montarrenti e Rocca Ricciarda. La preziosa collaborazione con il Museum of London Archaeology ha poi consentito di inserire tra i casi studio cinque siti urbani londinesi, oltre ai villaggi di Westbury e Great Linford e alla città portuale di Southampton. I risultati ottenuti hanno fatto emergere una serie di tendenze specifiche che appaiono rivelatrici non solo di un diverso modello di produzione, circolazione e consumo della ceramica ma anche di più ampi sviluppi in atto nel tardo Medioevo.

Lucca occupa un posto speciale nella storia e nella storiografia dell’alto e pieno medioevo, italiano ed europeo. Fu il cuore di un organismo politico della galassia carolingia, la marca di Tuscia, che conobbe un’eccezionale fortuna, restando vitale fino a quasi tutto il secolo XI. Costituisce, d’altra parte, uno dei contesti meglio illuminati dalle fonti: la documentazione sul territorio lucchese dall’inizio del secolo VIII è straordinariamente cospicua e continua. Di qui discende la scelta di questo caso di studio per tornare a riflettere su trasformazioni storiche di portata generale. Prendendo le mosse da una ricerca sistematica sulle fonti documentarie lucchesi, un bacino talmente vasto da restare ancora in larga parte inesplorato, questo libro si propone l’obiettivo di ricostruire i parametri fondamentali che regolavano il funzionamento di una società di corte e di seguirne i processi di trasformazione fino all’età signorile e cavalleresca. Al centro dell’indagine sta il segmento sociale che progressivamente assunse tratti aristocratici e un più definito profilo di distinzione, promosse la fondazione di castelli nelle campagne e la formazione di ambiti territoriali su cui esercitare poteri di comando e di coercizione.
