"To Arthur Agee and William Gates, basketball means literally everything. Their only escape from the grim streets of Chicago's West Side is onto the neighborhood courts, where they and their friends dream of playing in the NBA. For most it's just a forlorn hope, but Arthur and William are different: barely out of grade school, they already display the raw potential that just might make their dreams come true." "Hoop Dreams began as a documentary film that tracked these two young men for almost five years as they struggled to turn their playground skills into the kind of basketball mastery that could earn them college scholarships - and maybe even a place in the pros. Critics from coast to coast hailed the film as one of the finest documentaries ever made, both a superb portrait of two gifted teenagers working their way through the tough, often cruel basketball machine, and a searing look at the harsh realities of inner-city life." "In this remarkable book, award-winning journalist Ben Joravsky chronicles Arthur and William's battle to reach the top and tells the story that could not be told on film. His vivid prose evokes the experience of being plucked from the projects and offered a glittering future. He captures not only the moments of basketball glory at suburban St. Joseph High School, which produced superstar Isiah Thomas, but also the loneliness of being poor and black in an affluent, mostly white school and the overwhelming pressure to perform both on the court and in the classroom."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Shawn Harrington returned to Marshall High School as an assistant coach years after appearing as a player in the iconic basketball documentary film Hoop Dreams. In January of 2014, Marshall's struggling team was about to improve after the addition of a charismatic but troubled player. Everything changed, however, when two young men opened fire on Harrington's car as he drove his daughter to school. Using his body to shield her, Harrington was struck and paralyzed. The mistaken-identity shooting was followed by a series of events that had a devastating impact on Harrington and Marshall's basketball family. Over the next three years it became obvious that the dream of the game providing a better life had nearly dissolved. Author Rus Bradburd tells Shawn's story with empathy and care, exploring the intertwined tragedies of gun violence, health care failure, racial assumptions, struggling educational systems, corruption in athletics—and the hope that can survive them all.

South Asian American men are not usually depicted as ideal American men. They struggle against popular representations as either threatening terrorists or geeky, effeminate computer geniuses. To combat such stereotypes, some use sports as a means of performing a distinctly American masculinity. Desi Hoop Dreams focuses on South Asian-only basketball leagues common in most major U.S. and Canadian cities, to show that basketball, for these South Asian American players is not simply a whimsical hobby, but a means to navigate and express their identities in 21st century America. The participation of young men in basketball is one platform among many for performing South Asian American identity. South Asian-only leagues and tournaments become spaces in which to negotiate the relationships between masculinity, race, and nation. When faced with stereotypes that portray them as effeminate, players perform sporting feats on the court to represent themselves as athletic. And though they draw on black cultural styles, they carefully set themselves off from African American players, who are deemed “too aggressive.” Accordingly, the same categories of their own marginalization—masculinity, race, class, and sexuality—are those through which South Asian American men exclude women, queer masculinities, and working-class masculinities, along with other racialized masculinities, in their effort to lay claim to cultural citizenship. One of the first works on masculinity formation and sport participation in South Asian American communities, Desi Hoop Dreams focuses on an American popular sport to analyze the dilemma of belonging within South Asian America in particular and in the U.S. in general.

Hoop Dreams Fulfilled is a detailed, first-person account of an athlete's failures and struggles on his way to playing professional basketball. Through in-depth experiences, Tyson Hartnett describes his journey playing basketball starting in 4th grade, through high school, college, and eventually professionally overseas. He profiles his mistakes and failures, and his eventual redemption. This isn't just a book about an athlete achieving his goals. It's about the worst things Tyson experienced so younger athletes can learn from him. It's about what happens when an athlete is so focused on their sport that they don't care about anything else in life, and the repercussions of that mindset. Hoop Dreams Fulfilled touches on deep, intense sports psychology, and the weight and pressure many athletes feel but are afraid to talk about. Tyson recaps his failures in excruciating detail so others can learn from them. Hoop Dreams Fulfilled will appeal to anyone who has had significant challenges in their life, yet realized their potential to overcome and master these challenges. It contains universal life lessons which will appeal to people from all areas of life. Who this book is for: - Any young athlete who wants to play at the next level of their sport to understand what it takes - Parents to realize what may go on in their child's head through their sports career - Coaches to understand the power of influence they have on their athletes - The general public to get an in-depth, first person account of what it takes to be an athlete What this book discusses: - Dedication - Training for Sports - Recruiting - The Political Side of Sports - Relationships - Failure - Depression - Redemption - Sacrifice - Trust - And much, much, more... An initial review: "Hoop Dreams Fulfilled proves that you don't truly know someone unless they decide to let you in. I thought I knew Tyson, but the emotional bravery in his book rocked me. Most writers hide their truth in fancy phrases and perfumed prose. Hoop Dreams Fulfilled isn't that book. I was amazed at the honest look inside his world playing basketball, including his thoughts, fears, motivations and dreams." To read sample chapters, go to HoopDreamsFulfilled.com
