Ruth and I could vacation and travel — a more pleasant life. Sorrow struck. Ruth had developed small brain aneurysms and died within four days. Two and a half years later I married Janice Seybolt Morton, a widow with two young daughters. Life went on. And Princeton Seminary? Purposely locked in a forget corner. Then my phone rang. The same student who wanted a copy of my prayer decades ago, now Seminary Archivist, looked for my file, but it was forever assigned to trash. “I still have your prayer,” he said. He came for three days, asking questions and recording my answers. He unlocked the corner. I had portraits of five deceased, outstanding former colleagues at Princeton painted for the Seminary, and eventually established endowments for scholarships and distribution of Bibles in South Africa, together with liberal contributions for a new library. Graciously the Seminary dedicated a lecture room in the new library for me on October 22, 2013. This book fulfills my dream of tribute to several of my friends at Pretoria University dedicating their lives to the Kingdom of God. They are all long gone now, one fifty years ago in 2013, but to all applies the inscription on Johannes Petrus Potgieter’s grave stone at his mission station Rivoni: “THOU THEY WERE DEAD, YET SHALL THEY LIVE.”

A couple of months after my mother died, I became aware that I needed something to help me cope with her passing. One day, I was inspired to write a story each day, using a word prompt from a "Photo-a-Day" Facebook group. Some days, it would be the last thing I did, and often as I started to write, I would have no idea what would eventuate. On other days, there would be two or three articles inspired by the one word. Many stories were written over that year, and this book contains 100 of them. Selecting the right stories for this first volume of Conversations with Myself took a lot of prayer and shuffling, but I hope they will encourage, challenge, and give you something to smile about occasionally, just as they did for me while I was writing them.

This book is a story about my life which is based on the dreams of being great and successful as a young boy who afterwards came to the United States of America to pursue my dream. Upon reaching the land of the United Stated of America, the perspective of the dream was therefore changed to the American dream and I started following the American dream and halted from pursuing it for a few years to say the least. While I was on a hiatus from pursuing the dream, I felt that a major part of my life was missing because I did not fulfill the dream. Henceforth, I eventually restarted to follow the big American dream that I once had, but this time with enormous hope and stronger faith. I endured several predicaments and obstacles during my efforts to taste the American dream. But with faith, my belief in America's exceptionalism, perseverance, hard work, diligence, efforts, prayers, and self determination, I eventually succeeded even after I failed several times in those endeavors because of hope, faith, and the mind set that I have to make it regardless of what the obstacles could be. I made it through although it is only the beginning of the attainment of my dream. The theme of the story is to convince readers that faith, perseverance, efforts, determination and dedication and passion were the key constituents to my success of attaining the American dream and it is therefore possible for anyone to achieve any dream as long as they are willing to use and apply faith, hope, diligence, hard work, efforts, and perseverance.
