The devastating words Congenital Heart Defect thrust parents of more than 36,000 children annually into a frightening, dark tunnel—dramatically changing the dynamics of each family. Because CHD, attacks unexpectedly, parents reel, bombarded with information regarding treatments, tests, and decisions—as parents echo, "I’ve never felt so alone. I can’t believe this is happening to us." From the initial diagnosis and throughout the daunting journey, the twelve chapters and resources in this guide weave advice, support, and hope from fellow travelers and medical professionals who come alongside through encouraging short stories, refreshing helpful hints, and inspiring scriptures and prayers. Many weary parents pull apart as communication breaks down during these devastating times—sometimes far apart. You-niquely Made is a section that helps family members appreciate different personalities and methods of coping. Overwhelmed families find comfort and courage as they read about the struggles parents face, balancing needs of their child and family (the set-aside spouses and the invisible ones—siblings) and self—the caregiver. Readers come to understand—the new normal of congenital heart disease. Heartfelt stories also include becoming your child’s advocate, reactions to stages of grief including unexpected waves and survivor’s guilt. This second book in the "You Are Not Alone" book series joins national award winning, Hope for Families of Children with Cancer, shining rays of light in the darkness.

This 7-time award-winning narrative is the true story of a young black American woman who in the summer of 1984 uproots herself from family, friends, and life as she knows it, to marry a German man and move to his country. Tracie Frank Mayer does not speak the language and knows no one other than her husband when she gives birth six months later to her anxiously awaited son. Twelve days after his birth, a pediatric cardiologist says to her husband in German, “There is no surgery to save your son.” “Let your baby die,” he says to her in broken English. Their son, Marc is born with Heterotaxy Syndrome and only half of his heart. Battling her husband, the doctors who don’t believe Marc can survive, his innumerable infections as well as her own fears, Tracie does her level best to hold on in the maelstrom while doing all she can to ensure that her son has a chance at life. This enthralling memoir is a remarkable tale of rebellion and resilience; an inspirational story of one woman’s fight for her child’s life and a testimony to the perseverance of the human spirit. With its triumphantly happy ending, Tracie’s story will surely give hope and encouragement to anyone facing any battle, not of his or her own choosing.

Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) has a way of stopping everyone in its tracks. That is what it did to Sandra Kay when she first met Chloe – who became the inspiration for this book of incredible stories. "Matters of the Heart – Volume 1" is filled with big stories about some of the littlest heroes. Accompanied by a photo, each child's tale is lovingly told by the parents who know the stories best. Combined with a helpful glossary of terms and a list of resources, the stories in "Matters of the Heart – Volume 1," are not only tales of what has been, but also tales of what can be. Yes, many of them hold sorrow, but all of them hold the promise of new things to come. Much like a broken heart which becomes stronger as it heals, the healing power of the stories shared within can only make us all stronger, as well.

The Way My Heart Beats is a memoir through the eyes of a wife and a mother whose husband and son both have congenital heart defects (CHD) despite the lack of a proven genetic link. The memoir details the emotional roller coaster journey that was the first year of their son's life, following his father's footsteps on his own CHD journey. The book is an invaluable albeit confronting read for all parents with children diagnosed with CHD aiming to provide them with hope, empathy and empowerment. It is the story that no medical professional can explain as it details a parent's perspective of the ins and outs of the hospital setting with a child who has a life threatening illness. CHD affects 1-in-100 children in Australia and over half of those children require surgery to save their lives. It is the biggest killer for babies under the age of 1 and this book aims to create awareness as CHD can affect everybody at some stage be it your niece, grandson, uncle or next door neighbour.

Taiji Clinic is the first clinic to specialize in fetal ultrasound in Taiwan. Congenital heart diseases (CHDs) are the most common structural malformation. If treated properly after birth, most CHD patients have a promising outcome. Nowadays, a prenatal diagnosis warrants individualized perinatal management. As a pioneer in fetal ultrasound screening, the Taiji CHD Work Group was established in 2017. Our mission is to provide precise prenatal diagnosis, counseling, follow-up, and referral for fetal CHDs. Through the collaboration of obstetricians, neonatologists, pediatric cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons and nurses, we accompany families affected by fetal CHDs from prenatal diagnosis all the way through postnatal treatment. A picture is worth a thousand words. In these simplified figures, the structure, pathophysiology, and surgical plans for various CHDs are clearly delineated. This illustrated book will be a useful tool in the prenatal counseling of CHD. The following are the 9 common congenital heart diseases listed in this book: 1. Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) 2. Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) 3. Atrioventricular Septal Defect (AVSD) 4. Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) 5. Coarctation of the Aorta(CoA) 6. Interrupted Aortic Arch (IAA) 7. Pulmonary Stenosis (PS) 8. Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) 9. Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA) Our team produced pictures of the above congenital heart diseases, from the fetal period to postnatal surgical treatment. We hope that clinical medical professionals can communicate more effectively during the prenatal consultation with parents of fetal congenital heart disease.

From birth to adolescence, from doctor's office to playground. Written for parents whose child has a heart disorder, this book provides up-to-date and reliable information from medical experts on children's heart problems. The first edition of The Heart of a Child was widely praised for helping families understand and cope with heart disorders, and many support organizations and websites now recommend this book as "must have" for families. Reflecting changes in treatment and new knowledge about genetics, as well as changes in the system for health care delivery, the text and illustrations have been thoroughly updated with the latest developments in understanding and treating heart problems in children. The second edition includes: • New and updated information on the genetics of heart defects, including syndromes associated with heart defects • Descriptions of new approaches to treatment, including surgery and medication • Advice on how to deal with managed care • Information about advances in prenatal care • Updated list of websites, references, and resources for families • A note to grandparents Written by experts in pediatric cardiology from the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and the University of Utah Medical Center, this new edition of The Heart of a Child uses case examples, questions-and-answers, detailed drawings, and careful descriptions to explain the causes of heart disorders, how they are discovered and diagnosed, how they affect children, and how they are treated. The overriding principle of modern treatment is to restore the child who has a heart problem to the best possible health with the minimum of tests and procedures. The Heart of a Child helps parents understand the challenges, the options, the decisions—and the many reasons for hope.
