Huge numbers of our students are caught in storms of trauma—whether stemming from abuse, homelessness, poverty, discrimination, violent neighborhoods, or fears of school shootings or family deportations. This practical book focuses on actions that teachers can take to facilitate learning for these students. Identifying positive, connected teacher–student relationships as foundational, the authors offer direction for creating an emotionally safe classroom environment in which students find a refuge from trauma and a space in which to process events. The text shows how social and emotional learning can be woven into the school day; how literacies can be used to help students see a path through challenges; how to empower learners through debate, civic action, and service learning; and how to use the vital nature of the school community as an agent of change. This book will serve as a roadmap for creating uniformly consistent and excellent classrooms and schools that better serve children who experience trauma in their lives. Book Features: Makes a clear case for the need and responsibility of schools to equip students with tools to learn despite the trauma in their lives. Shows practical classroom instructional and curricular interactions that address trauma while advancing student academic learning. Uses literacy and civic action as pathways to empowerment. Provides a method and tools for developing a coherent plan for creating a trauma-sensitive school.

This book isn't about being rich or poor, but I like to think that when Bill Gates said this, he meant that if you were born unhappy, it's not your fault because it is your responsibility to create your happiness. Creating an environment of contentment is up to you.The world we live in is unfair, and so many out there are bearing with not one but several forms of injustice. Sadly, though, there isn't a damn thing we can do about it. An idealistic world is very different than the real world. The idealistic world doesn't consider differences in religious or financial backgrounds; it does not consider a person's colour of skin before deciding whether or not they are worth talking, but our world does. There are thousands of books already published about the cancer that racism is. This book isn't regarding racism, but it would be impossible to write it out completely since it is a part of my life story. It entails the rather cruel life I led, the lessons I learned, as well as the thrill of living life through my eyes. This book will show you the injustices that such a significant portion of the entire population is going through, but no one says anything because it's just not worth it.B.D. Guandong was born into an oppressive regime led by the Muslims in Sudan; it was the oppressive regime that stated in 1955. Having been born into this regime that transgressed the boundaries between humanity and cruelty. He went through terrible times and in this book, he tells his story.Bayak has always been a firm believer in equality across all religions and ethnicities. He spent most of his life trying to reach a point where he could tell his story, and now, he hopes to raise awareness about these long-ignored issues.

This is a book about resiliency. Its purpose is to relay the message that we all have a story. We started from somewhere and some people's starting points are more challenging than others. But no matter how insurmountable the mountains and valleys may seem, you can and will make it through. The pressures of life are not meant to break you nor destroy you. The pressures of life are to make you stronger so that you can tell your story in the end that it may serve to help thousands if not millions of others going through similar situations. Nothing happens by accident. Everything happens for a purpose and that purpose is for you to learn, grow, and serve.

Fostering Resilience And Well Being In Children And Families In Poverty written by Valerie Maholmes PhD and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-02-11 with Psychology categories.

The number of children living in families with incomes below the federal poverty level increased by 33 percent between 2000 and 2009, resulting in over 15 million children living in poverty. Some of these children are able to overcome this dark statistic and break the intergenerational transmission of poverty, offering hope to an otherwise bleak outlook, but this raises the question--how? In Fostering Resilience and Well-being in Children and Families in Poverty, Dr. Valerie Maholmes sheds light on the mechanisms and processes that enable children and families to manage and overcome adversity. She explains that research findings on children and poverty often unite around three critical factors related to risk for poverty-related adversity: family structure, the presence of buffers that can protect children from negative influences, and the association between poverty and negative academic outcomes, and social and behavioral problems. She discusses how the research on resilience can inform better interventions for these children, as poverty does not necessarily preclude children from having strengths that may protect against its effects. Importantly, Maholmes introduces the concept of "hope" as a primary construct for understanding how the effects of poverty can be ameliorated. At the heart of the book are interviews with family members who have experienced adversity but managed to overcome it through the support of targeted programs and evidence-based interventions. Student leaders provide unique perspectives on the important role that parents and teachers play in motivating youth to succeed. Finally, professionals who work with children and families share their observations on effective interventions and the roles of culture and spirituality in fostering positive outcomes. Excerpts from these interviews bring research to life and help call attention to processes that promote hope and resilience. This book will be invaluable for policymakers, educators, and community and advocacy groups, as well as scholars and students in family studies, human development, and social work.

Modello written by Jack Pransky and has been published by CCB Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-02 with Medical categories.

"Modello" is the true story from beginning to end of how Dr. Roger Mills and staff accomplished the "miracle" in the Modello and Homestead Gardens Housing Projects, applying the Three Principles/Health Realization approach based on a new spiritual psychology. Through extensive interviews with residents as well as Dr. Mills, his staff and other professionals, a very compelling and moving portrait is painted of how two low-income, inner-city housing projects replete with violence, crack, drug gangs, abuse, welfare dependency and hopelessness were completely turned around within two-and-a-half years. This book shows how people who lived in the most difficult circumstances were reached, came to find hope and changed their lives. "In all my years in prevention I have never seen this level of change in people!" It is a truly inspirational story. The lives of people on whom society has given up were completely turned around. At the same time it is a sociological study. It shows how a new and different inside-out, spiritual paradigm, which on the surface seems too simple and backwards to possibly work in such overwhelming conditions, can produce incredible results and create changes in people's lives that stand head and shoulders above the traditional outside-in paradigm for prevention, human services, social work, community development and education. It has vast implications for improving humanity's social ills. About the Author Jack Pransky, Ph.D. is founder/director of the Center for Inside-Out Understanding. He authored the books, "Somebody Should Have Told Us!: Simple Truths for Living Well, Parenting from the Heart, Prevention from the Inside-Out; Prevention: The Critical Need" and co-authored "Healthy Thinking/ Feeling/Doing from the Inside-Out" prevention curriculum for middle school students. Pransky has worked in the field of prevention since 1968 in a wide variety of capacities and now provides consultation, training, counseling and coaching from the inside-out, throughout the U.S. and internationally. He is also cofounder/director of the nonprofit consulting organization, Prevention Unlimited, which created the Spirituality of Prevention Conference. In 2001 his book, "Modello" received the Martin Luther King Storyteller's Award for the book best exemplifying King's vision of "the beloved community," and in 2004 Jack won the Vermont Prevention Pioneer's Award.
