This book seeks to do two interpretative tasks at the same time. First, it attempts to do biblixcal theology, to discern and articulate the main theological claims of a body of textual material, to listen to the text and to speak echoses of it. Second, it seels to make a hermeneutical move to our theological situation by drawing a 'dynamic equivalent' between Israel's exilic situation and our own. Biblical theology that hs any vitality is always done in this way. The body of textual material in question is the tradition of Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Deutero-Isaiah, embodying some of the boldest and most eloquent theological probing in the Old Testament. We are invited to join an exploration of the themes of relinquishment and receiving as expeienced in 587 BCE in terms of the ending of an old, familiar order and the irruption of a new one and to experience the powerful analogies drawn for our own generation.

Christian congregations, like just about everything else in our culture, are undergoing tremendous change. That's not a huge revelation. Almost everyone involved with congregations agrees with that statement, because we live with that reality. One of the central changes for congregations today is that they are no longer the center of social and cultural life in most communities. Today, depending on where you live, churches are somewhere between slightly off center and all the way at the margins of centers of social influence in their communities. Perhaps no group of churches has experienced this shift more dramatically than "Old First" churches. Another change is that denominational organizations are no longer the repository of all resources, services, and expertise that congregations need to be effective. Often, the true "experts" are not denominational organizations, but other congregations. The best denominational organizations see their task, primarily, as cultivating a network of churches and ministry partners and connecting them to one another as a community of mutual learning and resourcing.With these changes in mind, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of North Carolina (CBFNC) partnered with First Baptist Church Wilmington and others in 2010 to produce the first "Hopeful Imagination" conference. The centerpiece of the conference was telling the story of FBC Wilmington in the words of its leaders. It was a story of how an "Old First" church adapted to our changing times and managed not only to survive, but also to thrive. In addition to the resource of the FBC story, we brought in other leaders who made contributions to the corporate learning. Teams of congregational leaders attended the conference, listened to the stories, and returned home to apply their learning in their own congregations and communities.

Saints in Exile studies, from an insider's perspective, the worship practices and social ethics of the African American family of Holiness, Pentecostal, and Apostolic churches known collectively as the Sanctified Church. Cheryl Sanders identifies the theme of exile, both as an idea and an experience, as the key to understanding the dialectical nature of African American religious and intellectual life, that W.E.B. Du Bois called "double-conscious." Sanders's saints in exile are a people who see themselves as "in the world but not of it"; their marginalized status is both self-imposed and involuntary, a consequence of racism, sexism and other forms of elitism. When joined with the biblical tropes of homecoming and reconciliation, the concept of exile serves as a vital vantage point from which to identify, critique, and remedy the continued alienation of blacks, women, and the poor in the United States. Sanders's interpretive approach clarifies many paradoxical features of black existence, especially the peculiar interplay of the sacred and the secular in African American song, speech, and dance. She particularly scrutinizes gospel music, a product of the Sanctified worship tradition that has had a significant influence on popular culture. Saints in Exile goes further than any previous study in illuminating the African American experience; it will be welcomed by scholars and students of American religion, African American studies, and American History.
