Excerpt from Horeb and Jerusalem It is well known that some of the localities in the East, of deepest interest to the reader of Scripture, are involved in uncertainty and dispute. Great names can be quoted in support of various opinions regarding them, and not a few have resigned themselves to the conclusion that, at this distance of time, they are beyond the possibility of satisfactory identification. It is admitted at any rate, on all sides, that the most important section of Scripture Topography is open for further inquiry and settlement, and I hope, therefore, to be the more readily excused in presenting some aspects of the subject that have appeared to me worthy of attention, and that may contribute, in some degree, to a clearer elucidation of the sacred narrative. The localities here discussed refer to the scenes of the Exodus and the Redemption. In the first section of the book, I have attempted to trace the route of the Israelites from Goshen to Sinai, and to examine some of those questions which have had so prominent a place in recent controversies on the Pentateuch. Excerpt from The Conquest of Jerusalem The emotion, the heat, and the fasting had been too much for him. He wanted to be in the fresh air and alone. But outside in the enclosed court a similar crowd of ardent worshippers Of all races pressed round the movable altars, and prostrated themselves before the tabernacles made from palm-leaves. The officiating priests had to restrict the movements of their arms, and the thurifers, for lack of room, shook their censers up and down instead of swinging them, hundreds of eyes following the bluish fumes ecstatically as they ascended straight to the blue sky above. Excerpt from Jerusalem Under the High-Priests: Five Lectures on the Period, Between Nehemiah and the New Testament The Lectures in this book were composed for popular audiences in connection with the Bath and Wells Diocesan Society for Higher Religious Education, and it is not their object to produce what the professed historical student would regard as new results, but to give in a few strokes the general outline and colour of a period which must surely have an interest for everybody who finds any interelst in the Bible. Any one who should come to a book of this sort for the elucidation of obscure problems or matters of controversy would certainly be disappointed; it is on such points indeed that a work intended for students would chiefly fix its scrutiny; it has been my principle to neglect them, manual. It seemed to me that even, as such, they might be welcome to some of those people who, without being experts, are still interested in a period so crucial for the history of our religion, especially when I reflected that, were I asked to mention any book which gave some brief account of it, in accord ance with the present state of expert opinion, I should be somewhat at a loss to name one. Those who wish to make a serious study of the period will, of course, go to the books which give them a command of the learned literature on the subject; it is hardly necessary, even in England, to name the great cardinal work of Dr. Emil Schurer. The study of the more distinctively religious currents of the period has been greatly furthered and facilitated by the work of Professor R. G. Charles, the recog nised authority upon Jewish apocalyptic writings. I could wish that his translation of the book of Enoch were published in a popular form, which would make it more known, as it ought to be, by all those who desire light upon the New Testament. It is from this translation, I need hardly say, that my quotations from Enoch are taken. The quotations from the Psalter of Solomon follow the version by the Bishop of Winchester and Mr. M. R. James (ryle and James). About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from View of the Hebrews: Exhibiting the Destruction of Jerusalem; The Certain Restoration of Judah and Israel; The Present State of Judah and Israel; And an Address of the Prophet Isaiah Relative to Their Restoration Few historical events have been of such interest to the world, as the destruction ofjerusalem by the Romans, about forty years after the ascension of our blessed Lord. This remark is true, if the event be contemplated simply as a piece of history. But when it is admitted that the event was a striking ful filment of denunciations of wrath uttered by Christ on his persecutors, and by ancient prophets on the same people also that it furnished a most brilliant type ofthe final destruction of Antichrist in the last days it becomes far more interesting. This inter est must be felt at this period, when the great events of the last days connected with the restoration of the Hebrews, are in a train of incipient fulfilment. The signs of the times are important on this gene tion. For upwards of thirty years they have been assuming an aspect, with which the Christian world ought to feel deeply impressed and which will is sue in the battle of that great day of God Almighty, and in the millennial kingdom of Christ. The restoration of God's ancient people is to be as life from the'dead to the Gentile world. Some have queried whether they are literally to be res tored to Palestine. It hence becomes important to examine the prophetic scriptures upon this subject. This the writer has attempted to do; and will exhi bit the result of his enquiries, in the following pa} ges.
