In his 1825 book "View of the Hebrews," Rev. Ethan Smith makes the case that Native Americans are descendants of the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel. These tribes were said to have disappeared after being taken captive by the Assyrians in the 8th century BCE. Smith''s speculation was inspired by the apocryphal 2 Esdras 13:41, which says that the Ten Tribes traveled to a far country, "where never mankind dwelt"-which Smith interpreted to mean North America. Smith attempted to rescue Indians from the contemporary myth of mound builders being a separate race by making the indigenous people "potential converts worthy of salvation." "If our natives be indeed from the tribes of Israel," Smith wrote, "American Christians may well feel, that one great object of their inheritance here, is, that they may have a primary agency in restoring those ''lost sheep of the house of Israel.''" In arguing his position that native Americans are the lost tribes of Israel, Smith notes the following: * The American natives have one origin. * Their language appears to have been Hebrew. * They have their imitation of the ark of the covenant in ancient Israel. * They have been in practice of circumcision. * They have acknowledged one and only one God. * The celebrated William Penn gives account of the natives of Pennsylvania, which go to corroborate the same point. * The Indians having one tribe, answering in various respects to the tribe of Levi. * Several prophetic traits of character given to the Hebrews, do accurately apply to the aborigines of America. * The Indians being in tribes, with their heads and names of tribes, afford further light. * Their having something answering to the ancient cities of refuge, seems to evince their Israelitish extraction. * Their variety of traditions, historical and religious. Smith surmises that the Mayan and Aztec pyramids were built by the lost tribes of Israel who were familiar with building pyramids from having built the Egyptian pyramids while enslaved in Egypt. Early Mormons occasionally cited the View of the Hebrews to support the authenticity of the Book of Mormon. Smith notes that "the preservation of the Jews, as a distinct people, for eighteen centuries, has been justly viewed as a kind of standing miracle in support of the truth of revelation. But the arguments furnished from the preservation and traditions of the ten tribes, in the wilds of America from a much longer period, must be viewed as furnishing, if possible, a more commanding testimony." Regarding the lost tribes, Smith exhorts the reader to "teach them their ancient history; their former blessings; their being cast away; the occasion of it, and the promise of their return. Tell them the time draws near, and they must now return to God of their salvation. Tell them their return is to be as life from the dead." Ethan Smith (1762-1849) was a New England Congregationalist clergyman. Smith served congregations for several years at a time in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts. He accepted an appointment as "City Missionary" in Boston. He also served as a supply pastor for vacant pulpits. Available for the first time fifty years after the author's death, Studies of the Book of Mormon presents this respected church leader's investigation into Mormonism's founding scripture. Reflecting his talent for combining history and theology, B. H. Roberts considered the evident parallels between the Book of Mormon and Ethan Smith's View of the Hebrews, a book that predated the Mormon scripture by seven years. If the Book of Mormon is not historical, but rather a reflection of the misconceptions current in Joseph Smith's day regarding Indian origins, then its theological claims are suspect as well, Roberts asserted. In this and other research, it was Roberts's proclivity to go wherever the evidence took him, in this case anticipating and defending against potential future problems. Yet the manuscript was so poorly received by fellow church leaders that it was left to Roberts alone to decide whether he had overlooked some important piece of the puzzle or whether the Mormon scripture's claims were, in fact, illegitimate. This famous book by preacher and theologian Ethan Smith puts forth the notion that the Native American tribes are descended from the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel. The idea that the distant forebears of the Native American tribes had somehow arrived in North America long ago from Israel, perhaps during the Great Flood described in the Biblical Old Testament, was a popular belief in the USA during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Lacking an alternative explanation for the tribal peoples, the preachers of the era advanced this Israelite theory, which gained currency especially among the more pious Christians in the fledgling United States. Concepts that Ethan Smith and others advanced were later discredited by anthropologists, who determined that the ancestors of the Native American peoples had in fact migrated across the frozen plains of Alaska. Despite being disproven by later research, View of the Hebrews remains interesting for its insight into the popular beliefs and suppositions of religious scholars at the time. View of the Hebrews is also famous today for the influence it had in the establishment of Mormonism. The Book of Mormon has, in several chapters, parallels of opinions and tone to Ethan Smith's View of the Hebrews. This has led later scholars to suppose that Joseph Smith, the founder and prophet of the Mormon faith, had read this book at some point and used it to compose his own prophetical work. Ethan Smith was a lifelong clergyman who was born in Massachusetts, New England. In his youth, he witnessed the American Revolution succeed: thereafter he embarked upon a long career as a member of the Congregationalist clergy, authoring several popular books on theological themes. He lived to the age of eighty-seven - at the time a remarkable lifespan - and was reputed to have memorized much of the Bible by heart, so that he could continue to preach even as his eyesight failed.

According to a commonplace narrative, the rise of modern political thought in the West resulted from secularization—the exclusion of religious arguments from political discourse. But in this pathbreaking work, Eric Nelson argues that this familiar story is wrong. Instead, he contends, political thought in early-modern Europe became less, not more, secular with time, and it was the Christian encounter with Hebrew sources that provoked this radical transformation. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Christian scholars began to regard the Hebrew Bible as a political constitution designed by God for the children of Israel. Newly available rabbinic materials became authoritative guides to the institutions and practices of the perfect republic. This thinking resulted in a sweeping reorientation of political commitments. In the book’s central chapters, Nelson identifies three transformative claims introduced into European political theory by the Hebrew revival: the argument that republics are the only legitimate regimes; the idea that the state should coercively maintain an egalitarian distribution of property; and the belief that a godly republic would tolerate religious diversity. One major consequence of Nelson’s work is that the revolutionary politics of John Milton, James Harrington, and Thomas Hobbes appear in a brand-new light. Nelson demonstrates that central features of modern political thought emerged from an attempt to emulate a constitution designed by God. This paradox, a reminder that while we may live in a secular age, we owe our politics to an age of religious fervor, in turn illuminates fault lines in contemporary political discourse.
