This is the third annual compendium of a Technical Session of the Physiology Working Group of the Society of American Foresters held at the National Convention. Specialists in a dedicated area of tree physiology were invited to prepare chapter contributions synthesizing the status of knowledge in their area of expertise. Plant growth regulators (PGRs) was selected as the topic for in-depth examination at the 1986 Technical Session because a knowledge of how these "secondary messengers" regulate tree morphogenesis is vital to applications of biocontrol and biotechnology. Plant growth regulators have been the subject of numerous reviews in recent years. However, few have dealt specifically with woody perennials, and they are generally confined to single processes and/or organs. This volume attempts to provide a more comprehensive treatise of PGRs as they influence various ontogenetic events in forest trees. Reproductive physiology, both sexual and asexual, is emphasized because of its relevance to current efforts directed at increasing efficiency in the breeding and production of genetically improved trees for reforestation. The chapters on vegetative growth will be of interest to silviculturists and urban foresters as they consider cultural treatments in the management of forests and individual trees for specific products and purposes. This book should serve as a valuable text and source of reference for students, researchers and other professionals interested in gaining a better understanding of PGRs. The reader, however, who expects definitive answers to how PGRs function or can be used to control specific processes is likely to be disappointed.

This is the second of the set of three volumes in the Encyclopedia of Plant Physiology, New Series, that will cover the area of the hormonal regulation of plant growth and development. The overall plan for the set assumes that this area of plant physiology is sufficiently mature for a review of current knowl edge to be organized in terms of unifying principles and processes. Reviews in the past have generally treated each class of hormone individually, but this set of volumes is subdivided according to the properties common to all classes. Such an organization permits the examination of the hypothesis that differing classes of hormones, acting according to common principles, are determinants of processes and phases in plant development. Also in keeping with this theme, a plant hormone is defined as a compound with the properties held in common by the native members of the recognized classes of hormone. Current knowledge of the hormonal regulation of plant development is grouped so that the three volumes consider advancing levels of organizational complexity, viz: molecular and subcellular; cells, tissues, organs, and the plant as an organized whole; and the plant in relation to its environment.

At the 6th International Conference on Plant Growth Substances, held in Carleton University, Ottawa in 1968, it was decided that the 7th should be held in Czecho slovakia, following an invitation by Dr. Kutacek. Historical events intervened and in 1969 another venue was sought. An offer from the Academy of Science in Canberra was accepted by the steering committee. This left rather less time than is desirable to organize an international meeting of this nature and it was with surprise and great relief that the Organizing Committee in Canberra welcomed the arrival of 183 delegates, including a relatively large overseas contingent, to the meeting in December, 1970. The aim of these Conferences is, of course, to provide a forum for discussion of new work and recent trends, both in the lecture sessions and in conversation. Although many of those who initiated these meetings (e.g. Skoog, Went, Blackman, Bennet-Clark) were absent from the Canberra conference - some have retired -it was good to see present so many of the new generation of research workers in this field.

R. P. PHARIS and D. M. REID The idea of a separate Encydopedia volume dealing with the "interrelations of plant hormones with factors in the environment of the plant, and its organs and tissues" originated with N. P. KEFFORD, and we are most appreciative of the help and advice provided by Prof. KEFFORD in the formative stages of this volume. We have thus interpreted "environment" very broadly to indude not only factors external to the plant, e. g. , gravity, light, temperature, wind, mechanieal wounding, water, organism s (induding pollen), and magnetic and electric stimuli, but internaI factors as well (e. g. , nutrients, both inorganic and photoassimilate, direction, and time). In our definition of "hormonaI effect", or "hormonaI involvement", we have asked our authors to take a broad ap proach, and to examine not only phenomena that are mediated by the known plant hormones, but to discuss as well a wide variety of processes and events where hormonal involvement is implied through more indirect analyses and observations. The volume begins with environmental factors internaI to the plant; R. J. WEAVER and J. O. JOHNSON thus examine "hormones and nutrients", their inter relationship in movement, accumulation, and diversion. As one studies a plant during its rapid growth phase, and later as maturation and aging proceed, it becomes apparent that time is an environmental cue of great significance, one which may exert a major influence via hormonal messages.

Plant Hormones written by P.J. Davies and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-12-01 with Science categories.

Plant hormones play a crucial role in controlling the way in which plants growand develop. Whilemetabolism providesthepowerand buildingblocks for plant life, it is the hormones that regulate the speed of growth of the individual parts and integrate these parts to produce the form that we recognize as a plant. In addition, theyplayacontrolling role inthe processes of reproduction. This book is a description ofthese natural chemicals: how they are synthesizedand metabolized; howthey work; whatwe knowoftheir molecular biology; how we measure them; and a description ofsome ofthe roles they play in regulating plant growth and development. Emphasis has also been placed on the new findings on plant hormones deriving from the expanding use ofmolecular biology as a tool to understand these fascinating regulatory molecules. Even at the present time, when the role of genes in regulating all aspects of growth and development is considered of prime importance, it is still clear that the path of development is nonetheless very much under hormonal control, either via changes in hormone levels in response to changes in gene transcription, or with the hormones themselves as regulators ofgene transcription. This is not a conference proceedings, but a selected collection ofnewly written, integrated, illustrated reviews describing our knowledge of plant hormones, and the experimental work that is the foundation of this knowledge.

One of the goals of plant science is to improve agricultural sustainability, increasing yield, food diversity, and nutrition, while minimizing the negative impact on our environment. In response to internal and external cues, plant hormones control various aspects of plant growth and development. The wealth of our knowledge on plant hormones shall greatly advance sustainable agriculture.

The processes and mechanisms that control the growth of woody plants are of crucial importance for both economic and biological reasons. The comprehensive coverage of Growth Control in Woody Plants includes discussion of the growth controlling factors in both reproductive structures (flowers, fruit, seeds, pollen, etc.) and vegetative organs (stems, branches, leaves, and roots). Other major topics covered include seed germination, seedling growth, physiological and environmental regulation of growth, cultural practices, and biotechnology. This comprehensive treatment of the many factors that control the growth of woody plants can serve both as a valuable text and as a frequently used reference. * Includes comprehensive representation of a broad subject* Provides thorough bibliographic coverage * Well illustrated* Serves as a vital companion to Physiology of Woody Plants, Second Edition
