I started writing this book many years ago, and it has just been gathering dust, as I did not know the process involved in getting a book published. However, I went on a holiday to Malaysia, and I was telling a lady friend I had just met that I had enough information about horses to write three books. The first one is for beginners. Without my knowledge, she contacted a book publisher and started the ball rolling. For myself, learning about horses was all hands-on working and learning over many years. However, these days, new riders are learning from TAFE courses, riding schools, pony clubs, books, and the internet. In my day, this was not the case. I left home at the age of fourteen to start learning about horses, as from a very early age, I knew I wanted to be a jockey. My love for horses has never faded.

There can be no better way of getting to know Ireland than by visiting its racecourses: from the glamour of Leopardstown and the class of The Curragh to the majestic mountains around Killarney; from the warm welcome at Gowran Park and Clonmel to the summer holidaymakers' meetings and 'industry' days in the winter months. At any one of these venues, you might catch a glimpse of a future Cheltenham Gold Cup champion or Derby winner in action. Horses for Courses guides readers through a typical year in Irish racing and highlights the individuality of each venue. All have their own special qualities and atmosphere but share two common traits: a warm welcome and good sport. And that is what the author believes Irish racing is all about. The country's courses enjoy a huge level of support from the local population. It might be raining and some of the races may be 'ordinary' but the stands will always be crowded. That is because racing is part of Irish culture and the nation's way of life: with 27 courses, it has proportionately far more venues than Great Britain. Meticulously researched and passionately written, Horses for Courses is the definitive guide to Ireland's racecourses and is essential reading for horse-racing enthusiasts everywhere.

Excerpt from The English Turf: A Record of Horses and Courses Such a period cannot be otherwise than propitious for the production of a work in which every subject is dealt with that can interest those who, in one form or another, to a greater or less extent find an attraction in the Turf. Books about racing have a not unnatural habit of being reminiscent: here, for a change, is one that deals with things as they are. That entirely new ground is broken will be at once apparent to those conversant with racing literature. For one thing a work of this nature has previously not been possible, because the conditions favourable to its compilation have not existed; but no one has even attempted the comprehensive task which the author has accomplished. The reader has set before him the characteristics of every racecourse in England, and of the racing that each year takes place upon it. Although less numerous than they were half a century ago, English racecourses are still many, and no two are alike either in conformation or in the sport provided and its management. These are the details which receive treatment, the writer's wide personal experience being in every case brought into play. References to the actors upon the stage, human and equine, form a natural corollary. When we read about historical racecourses we like to hear of the celebrated races associated with them and of the great horses that earned their reputations by winning them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work.
