The author has endeavored to bring together, in this volume, the opinions of numerous authorities, so arranged that the beginner may turn to it for reference either at a time when he merely contemplates "the setting up" of a stable, or later for information regarding the expenses and details of each department. All the material employed was gathered from reliable sources, and authorities are quoted in all matters of importance. In the arrangement of the divisions and subdivisions of the text an endeavor has been made to present the subjects systematically, with a view to rendering them explicit to a beginner and handy for reference. The collecting of this information was, primarily, the result of the writers desire to keep, with a limited amount of money, as many horses as could be well cared for. From time to time the monthly accounts varied so greatly under different servants, other conditions remaining the same, that occasionally the increased cost necessitated the number of horses being reduced.
