This book draws the attention on the livelihood and food security situation of women farmers, a topic largely neglected by academic studies. It offers in detailed empirical examination of the impact of informal social institutions on food security and coping strategies of these households in Meskan district of southern Ethiopia. Master's Thesis from the year 2021 in the subject Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: 2,0, Hawassa University (Faculty of environment, gender and development studies), course: Rural Development, language: English, abstract: Rural households, particularly smallholder farmers, are frequently predisposed to various vulnerabilites. This paper tries to investigate causes of livelihood vulnerability that rural households face and analyze coping strategies they apply. The analysis is done using data from household survey in Weradejo woreda of Halaba zone. The primary data was collected from 264 households, the secondary data was obtained from line office records and the review of related literature. The author then applies descriptive statistics and the econometrics model of multinomial logistic regression to identify the causes of vulnerability. Based on the descriptive analysis, the identified causes of households’ livelihood vulnerability are drought, farmland fragmentation, crop and livestock diseases, flooding, erratic rainfall, and shortage of agricultural inputs and shortage of capital. The capacity of the households and the community to cope with and recover from shocks remains low, despite the different strategies they adopt. The result of the multinomial logistic regression indicates that sex of the household head, age of household head, family size, and educational level of the household in schooling years, land size owned, pest/diseases, distance to market, and frequency of extension contact are the main determinants influencing the choice of the coping strategies by the respondents.

Focusing on the vulnerability and resilience to economic shocks at the household level, this book draws on extensive research activities carried out in two Melanesia countries: the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. In particular, it identifies the household impacts of the recent food, fuel and economic crises. The contributors also examine resilience by identifying how households responded to these recent economic events in order to cope with their impacts. Findings indicate that households are vulnerable to a range of shocks and often struggle to cope with their impacts. Shocks are making it harder for households to meet their basic needs. Households in Melanesia are facing increasing demands for money, in particular for school fees, basic foodstuffs and customary obligations. Concurrently, there are limited domestic opportunities for formal employment. Traditional social support networks are strong and are an important form of resilience. However, there is evidence that they are disintegrating. Of particular focus are the gendered impacts. Women are found to bear a disproportionate share of the burden in adjusting to household shocks. The authors highlight key areas in which public policy and development programmes can reduce household vulnerability and increase their resilience to future economic shocks.

The first round of the Myanmar Household Welfare Survey (MHWS), a nationally and regionally representative phone survey, was implemented between December 2021 and February 2022 with 12,100 households. This report discusses its findings related to shocks, livelihoods, coping strategies and food security. We find that almost 1 in 5 households experience physical insecurity, more than 1 in 10 were negatively affected by climatic shocks, and 3 in 5 experienced sickness or death of household members in the past three months. Two thirds of households reported a lower income in the beginning of 2022 compared to 12 months earlier, indicating widespread impacts of the pandemic, the political crisis, and the ensuing economic crisis. Ninety percent of households applied at least one coping strategy to deal with lack of food or money during the past month. More than half of all households lowered food and non-food expenditures. A large number of households also used more dramatic coping strategies, including high-risk income generating activities (4 percent), children working (3 percent of households), migration (1 percent), or selling of the dwelling or land (1 percent). Even though data were collected in the beginning of 2022 after the monsoon harvest and thus a relatively favorable time of the year for food security, still 9 percent of the households did not have an adequate food consumption pattern and 4 percent suffered from moderate or severe hunger. Violent events in the township, self-reported physical insecurity, climatic and health shocks all are strongly associated with negative outcomes for income, coping and food security. Chin and Kayah state experienced high levels of violence and consistently perform worse across the range of welfare indicators considered.

The second round of the Myanmar Household Welfare Survey (MHWS), a nationally and regionally representative phone survey, was implemented between April and June 2022. It follows from a first round that was carried out between December 2021 and February 2022. This report discusses the findings from the second round related to shocks, livelihoods, coping strategies and food security. We find that 19.6 percent of households reported security and climatic shocks in the three months prior to their interview. Further, there is an uptick in reported crime, violence,and insecurity across communities in the second round, compared with the first. Theft is also an important issue, with 3.2 percent of households burglarized. Fifty-five percent of households report a lower income in the beginning of 2022 compared to 12 months earlier. Eighty-three percent of households use at least one coping strategy to meet daily needs during the month prior to the survey. The three most common copying strategies are spending savings, reducing nonfood expenditure, and reducing food expenditure. Seventeen percent of households have poor or borderline food consumption, more than in round one (R1), when the share was 9.4 percent. This change is in part driven by a decrease in animal-sourced food consumption, from 5.0 days a week in R1, to 3.9 days a week in round two (R2). Finally, hunger is an issue for 4.0 percent of households. Regression analysis reveals that self-reported community insecurity and climatic shocks are strongly associated with negative outcomes for income, coping, and food security. Finally, households in Kayah and Chin are the most vulnerable; they report insecurity, violence, and crime in their communities and compared to the other states/regions are more likely to have income loss, poor food consumption and hunger.

The main objective of this study is to understand the impact of the ongoing armed conflict on household food security, and the sustainability of livelihood coping strategies employed in the Bamenda Municipality of the Northwest region of Cameroon by splicing the Food Insecurity Experience Scale and the Sustainable livelihood framework. Despite enormous multiform humanitarian food aid interventions, the situation is far from improving. It is therefore not clear to what extend the armed conflict has affected household food security in the NW region of Cameroon as a whole and the Bamenda municipality. The effectiveness of livelihood responses in solving the problem cannot also be ascertained. Understanding the relationship between armed conflict and food insecurity (access and availability), associated perceptions, coping strategies and livelihood responses is therefore critical in managing food insecurity across the bord. Although research works on the relationship between food security and violent conflict have steadily increased, it is still an emerging research theme among economists, political scientists, and development researchers to look at livelihood responses and food security in a volatile environment, especially in the Bamenda municipality of the Northwest Region of Cameroon which has been experiencing an ongoing arm conflict since 2017. The main research question of this study is: To what extend has the ongoing socio-political crisis impacted on household food security and what is the sustainability of the livelihood coping strategies being employed in the Bamenda Municipality of the Northwest region of Cameroon?
