Modern Thai House written by Robert Powell and has been published by Tuttle Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-10-10 with Photography categories.

With rich photography and insightful commentary, this Thai architecture and interior design book showcases some of the finest modern masterpieces in Southeast Asia. A tremendous body of sophisticated and sensitively designed architectural work has been produced in Thailand in the first decade of the 21st century. The 25 houses in The Modern Thai House illustrate the radical new ideas coming from a dynamic younger generation of architects who are producing work comparable with and sometimes even surpassing the very best architecture in the world. Most of these architects were trained in the U.S. or U.K. and reflect not only American and European sensibilities but also affinities with their contemporaries in Asia —including Japan, China, Singapore, and Bali—all hotbeds for innovation in modern design. The houses in this book are readily accessible from Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiangmai. They reflect a wide variety of concerns and solutions, such as: sustainability; responses to climate; strategies for cooling with minimal electricity; openness versus security in a large metropolis such as Bangkok; cultural sensitivity and responsiveness, as evidenced in a "three-generation house," built for a society in which the extended family is still prevalent; and cultural memory, as in the use of elements such as pilings, verandahs, and steeply pitched roofs with large overhangs that echo traditional Thai designs. Nurtured by an increasingly knowledgeable and wealthy clientele, modern architecture in Thailand is emerging with a variety of innovative architectural expressions.

As diverse as they may, these houses still seem to share another characteristics trait: the architects tendencies to question the conventional, the preconceived notion of a house. As a result they came up with critical ideas and creative solutions to their respective design problems. Tropical climate, therefore, does not always automatically translate to pitched roofs, which are by no means invalid or unfashionable, but simply not the only answer as many may have once assumed. Besides following the basic orientations to minimize direct sun and maximize ventilation, here, with the help of more advanced construction materials and techniques, the architects were able to devise creative solutions to climatic concern such as double roof/double skin, various kinds of louver, long cantilevered shading elements, and non-conventional insulating materials such as water, among others. Solutions in terms of spatial organizations are equally interesting.

This beautifully photographed volume showcases the Thai houses by the internationally renowned architect. Considered the Axel Vervoordt of Asia for his masterful use of ancient architectural elements and age-old materials, Ong-Ard Satrabhandhu is an architect whose unique style reflects its northern Thai—or Lanna—roots while keeping a firm footing in contemporary style. Lanna architecture is characterized by the concept of simplicity, nature, and focusing on "discovery, not invention." In a meaningful and informed manner, Ong-Ard Architects preserves then adds to this classic style’s simplicity with such contemporary touches as concrete floors and high, airy ceilings—creating a sophisticated juxtaposition between past and present. This presentation of Ong-Ard’s most striking architectural works was photographed by the master photographer François Halard especially for this book. Featured here are his inviting homes, resorts, and hotels, each a serene oasis whether in the countryside or the city. The interiors—grand yet spacious gestures that highlight nature-inspired architectural spaces—will inspire both casual readers and interior design aficionados alike.Striking a balance between the historic and contemporary, this volume encapsulates Thailand’s vast world influence and Ong-Ard’s keen design insight. It will be a treasured read for a worldwide audience interested in interiors, design, and architecture.
