Rising housing costs put secure and decent housing in central urban neighborhoods in peril. How do civil society organizations (CSOs) effectively demand accountability from the state to address the needs of low-income residents? In her groundbreaking book, Democratizing Urban Development, Maureen Donaghy charts the constraints and potential opportunities facing these community organizations. She assesses the various strategies CSOs engage to influence officials and ensure access to affordable housing through policies, programs, and institutions. Democratizing Urban Development presents efforts by CSOs in four cities across the hemispheric divide: Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Washington, DC, and Atlanta. Donaghy studies the impact and outcomes that ensue from these efforts, noting that CSOs must sometimes shift their own ideology or adapt to the political environment in which they operate to ensure access to housing and support the goals of an inclusive city.

This book looks at slums and social exclusion in the four major megacities of India and Brazil, and analyzes the interrelationships between urban policies and housing and environmental issues. The challenges posed in Delhi, Mumbai, Rio de Janeiro and Suo Paulo have spurred public reformers into action through housing, rehabilitation and conservation programs. Civil society and the inhabitants of these cities have also begun to get involved. On the other hand, one must wonder whether these challenges were partly created by the deficiencies of these very reformers and civil society, be it their lack of intervention (as advocates of government intervention would argue), or the flaws and inadequacies of their actions (as supporters of the free market would suggest). Are policies alleviating or aggravating social exclusion This book explores these questions and more.

Bras Lia Plan And Reality written by David G. Epstein and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1973-01-01 with Political Science categories.

A masterful account of Brasilia, the city of the future, where Brazil's continental destiny was to be fulfilled, where government would be efficient and functional, without the interference of radical students and labor leaders. The building of the city was a gigantic public-works program, reflecting the various ties that existed between the planners on one hand and the contractors and suppliers on the other. Epstein gives a detailed account of the pilot plan and the rise of satellite towns between 1957 and 1967. The planners dreamed of a city that would transcend the frustrations of urban life in the underdeveloped world, but they failed to provide a sector where the actual builders of the dream city would live. Shacktowns soon developed, and have expanded to accommodate migrants--often displaced, landless cultivators--who continue to be attracted to the city. The conclusion Epstein comes to is that urban squatting will remain a prominent feature of Brasilia, a part of a system deeply rooted in local, national, and global structure and ideology. Until there are revolutionary changes in society, squatting and shantytowns will be a fact of life in the underdeveloped world.

Law And Urban Change In Brazil written by Edesio Fernandes and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995 with City planning and redevelopment law categories.

This book undertakes a socio-legal analysis of the relation between law and the process of urban change in Brazil throughout this century. This is done through a critique of the evolution of urban legislation, as well as the discussion of some of the main forms of legal pluralism brought about by the urban processes concerning access to urban land and housing. The book aims to widen the scope of the existing urban research, which has largely underestimated the legal dimension of the urbanization process. It also aims to offer insights which should contribute to the understanding of the democratic process of social mobilization around urban issues.
