The proposed framework of concept linking combines insights of construction grammar with those of traditional functional descriptions to explain particularly challenging but often neglected areas of English grammar such as negation, modality, adverbials and non-finite constructions. To reach this goal the idea of a unified network of constructions is replaced by the triad of verb-mediated constructions, attribution and scope-based perspectivizing, each of them understood as a syntactically effective concept-linking mechanism in its own right, but involved in interfaces with the other mechanisms. In addition, concept linking supplies a novel approach to early child language. It casts fresh light on widely accepted descriptions of early two-word utterances and verb islands in usage-based models of language acquisition and encourages a new view of children’s ‘mistakes’. Intended readership: Constructionist and cognitive linguists; linguists and psychologists interested in language acquisition; teachers and students of English grammar and grammar in general.

Academic Paper from the year 2021 in the subject Didactics - English - Grammar, Style, Working Technique, , language: English, abstract: In the present experimental study, an attempt was made to study the effectiveness of the Concept Mapping Strategy In terms of Understanding Concepts of English Grammar. Concept mapping is the strategy employed to develop a concept map. It is a graphical tool for organizing and representing knowledge. Concept Maps include concepts, usually enclosed in circles or boxes of some type, and relationships between concepts indicated by a connecting line linking two concepts. Words on the line referred to as linking words or linking phrases, specify the relationship between the two concepts. The most important characteristic of a concept map is that the concepts are represented in a hierarchical fashion with the most inclusive, most general concepts at the top of the map and the more specific, less general concepts arranged hierarchically below. The concept map may pertain to some situation or event that one is trying to understand through the organization of knowledge in the form of a concept map, thus providing the context for the concept map. Another important characteristic of a concept map is the inclusion of cross-links. These are relationships or links between concepts in different segments or domains of the concept map. For the present study, a Non-equivalent Control Group Design was employed. Sample of 81 students of class VIII studying in the academic year 2010-11 was selected, using a Random sampling technique for teaching selected concepts of English Grammar. The intact groups as existed in the schools were taken for experimentation. One of the groups was taught English grammar Concepts through the Concept Mapping Strategy the other group was taught the same concepts using the Lecture Method. The treatment continued for 17 days at a rate of 40 minutes per day. The data were analyzed using ANCOVA.

Discourse analysis is a term that has come to have different interpretations for scholars working in different disciplines. The shaping of complex meanings depends on punctual and relational coding and inferencing. Coding is viewed as a vector which can run either from expression to content or from concepts to (linguistic) forms to mark independent conceptual relations. While coding relies on systematic resources internal to language, inferencing essentially depends on a layered system of autonomous shared conceptual structures, which include both cognitive models and consistency criteria grounded in a natural ontology. Inference guided by coding is not a residual pragmatic device but it is a direct way to long-term conceptual structures that guide the connection of meanings. The interaction of linguistic forms and concepts is particularly clear in conceptual conflict where conflictual complex meanings provide insights into the roots of significance and the linguistic structure of metaphors. Complementing a formal analysis of linguistic structures with a substantive analysis of conceptual structures, a philosophical grammar provides insights from both formal and functional approaches toward a more profound understanding of how language works in constructing and communicating complex meanings. This monograph is ideally addressed to linguists, philosophers and psychologists interested in language as symbolic form and as an instrument of human action rooted in a complex conceptual and cognitive landscape.
