Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Other, grade: 1,3, Dresden Technical University (Institut für Anglistik/ Amerikanistik), course: Science Fiction Films, language: English, abstract: “When I was young, I met this beautiful girl by a lake.” The following paper focuses on how the afterlife is allegorized in Vincent Ward’s film. Ward combines motifs from various religions. Ancient, Western and Eastern versions of afterlife merge to an individualistic Great Beyond. The leading literary influence seems to come from Dante‘s The Divine Comedy, especially considering the movie’s depiction of Hell. Also several parallels to art work stand out. Of course, as no sources can prove it, it is just speculation if, especially the referred literature and paintings were an inspiration for the film. However, some parallels cannot be dismissed out of hand. For a clearer arrangement, I assembled the research paper in a Heaven (Chapter 2.1.) and a Hell (Chapter 2.2.) section and will then summarize my observations as well as explicate how this all fits into the science fiction genre (Chapter 3). Unfortunately, apart from various reviews on the internet, no other secondary text on What Dreams May Come can be found in literature. On that account, my paper mainly bases on the film itself and several reference books on theology, philosophy and mythology. Namely, The Oxford Companion to Philosophy and Boxton’s The Complete World of Greek Mythology as reference books as well as work on afterlife: Coward’s Das Leben nach dem Tod in den Weltreligionen and Braun’s Das Jenseits – Die Vorstellungen der Menschheit über das Leben nach dem Tod.

The translator provides the text and historical context of the writings of the twelfth-century Chinese Zen master Ta Hui Tsung Kao in the Chi Yeuh Lu. Included are letters, sermons, and lectures, which cover a variety of subjects ranging from concern over the illness of a friend's son to the tending of an ox. Ta Hui addresses his remarks mainly to people in lay life and not to his fellow monks, emphasizing ways in which those immersed in worldly occupations can nevertheless learn Zen and achieve the liberation promised by the Buddha.

Master's Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Middle- and South America, grade: 1,3, University of M nster (Politikwissenschaft), 84 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Shortly after the treaties founding the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), European Atomic Energy Community (EAC) and European Community (EC) were signed, there were efforts in other regions of the world as well to follow this example, notably in Latin America, where, among other Associations, the Andean Pact (now Andean Community or Comunidad Andina de Naciones, CAN) was established. In contrast to that on European integration, however, most political and academic discourse on the Andean Community agrees upon the fact that this integration process has, up to now, not been very "successful", and quite often it is called a complete failure. This thesis wants to contribute to the search of possible reasons for this.In order to explain the lack of "success" of Andean integration - especially in the period since the late 1980s - this thesis focuses on an element which, in most integration theories, is considered the most important prerequisite for regional integration: interdependence, and thus a demand for integration on the part of the region's citizens. It is argued that in principle, integration can create or at least reinforce its own demand, but that this has only happened in the Andean case to a relatively small extent and limited to few sectors of the highly unequal societies in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela.

Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 2,3, University of Bonn, language: English, abstract: The work that will be focused on the novel “I Am Legend“ by Richard Matheson brings together the idea of the last living human on earth and the myth of vampires. The author shows the theories of the novel that are hidden between the lines. These theories are on the one hand easy to find and very obvious but on the other hand they have to be decoded word by word. To be more specific, I will try to show that the condition of alienation is one of the main topics in Matheson’s writing. Moreover, I will show some postmodern aspect of the novel and why it is so fascinating to read apocalyptic writings. The novel may be written in 1954 and set in the late 1970s but it can be a model for current interpretations of the apocalypse since apocalyptic writings make sense of bad things and are coping with situations in which people feel helpless.

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Hannover (Englisches Seminar), language: English, abstract: The present thesis deals with The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, one of William Blake's prophetic books. These are a series of texts, which were written in imitation of biblical books of prophecy, but expressing the poet's own personal romantic and revolutionary beliefs. It is not exactly known when the work was written. One assumes it was composed in London between 1790 and 1793, a period of political conflict arising immediately after the French Revolution. S. Foster Damon argues that the American and French Revolution had an immense influence on Blake writing the Marriage: The American and French Revolutions promised a better world; and stirred Blake to a new enthusiasm, from which he deduced the theory that apparent Evil, such as War, is only Energy working against established order. This was a new perception of Truth; all his problems seemed solved by it; and he hailed the light triumphantly in another book, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell (1793) Apart from the opening Argument and the Song of Liberty, the entire book is written in prose. The book is about the first person narrator's visit to Hell, a concept taken by Blake from Dante's Inferno and Milton's Paradise Lost. Like many other of Blake's works, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell was influenced by the mysticism of Swedish theosophist Emanuel Swedenborg. Moreover, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell is also in part a satire on Emanuel Swedenborg's writings, especially on Heaven and Hell from which Blake adapted the title, and on the New Jerusalem Church which was set up by Swedenborg's British followers.
