The book provides a global perspective of local government response towards the COVID-19 pandemic through the analysis of a sample of countries in all continents. The COVID-19 pandemic had a global impact on public health, in the well-being of citizens, in the economy, on civic life, in the provision of public services, and in the governance of cities and other human settlements, although in an uneven form across countries, cities and local communities. Cities and local governments have been acting decisively to apply the policy measures defined at national level to the specific local conditions. COVID-19 has exposed the inadequacy of the crisis response infrastructures and policies at both national and local levels in these countries as well as in many others across the world. But it also exposed much broader and deeper weaknesses that result from how societies are organized, namely the insecure life a substantial proportion of citizens have, as a result of economic and social policies followed in previous decades, which accentuated the impacts of the lockdown measures on employment, income, housing, among a myriad of other social dimensions. Besides the analysis of how governments, and local government, responded to the public health issues raised by the spread of the virus, the book deals also with the diversity of responses local governments have adopted and implemented in the countries, regions, cities and metropolitan areas. In An Epidemic of Rumors, Jon D. Lee examines the human response to epidemics through the lens of the 2003 SARS epidemic. Societies usually respond to the eruption of disease by constructing stories, jokes, conspiracy theories, legends, and rumors, but these narratives are often more damaging than the diseases they reference. The information disseminated through them is often inaccurate, incorporating xenophobic explanations of the disease’s origins and questionable medical information about potential cures and treatment. Folklore studies brings important and useful perspectives to understanding cultural responses to the outbreak of disease. Through this etiological study Lee shows the similarities between the narratives of the SARS outbreak and the narratives of other contemporary disease outbreaks like AIDS and the H1N1 virus. His analysis suggests that these disease narratives do not spring up with new outbreaks or diseases but are in continuous circulation and are recycled opportunistically. Lee also explores whether this predictability of vernacular disease narratives presents the opportunity to create counter-narratives released systematically from the government or medical science to stymie the negative effects of the fearful rumors that so often inflame humanity. With potential for practical application to public health and health policy, An Epidemic of Rumors will be of interest to students and scholars of health, medicine, and folklore.

This edited volume presents a compendium of emerging and innovative studies on the proliferation of new working spaces (NeWSps), both formal and informal (such as coworking spaces, maker spaces, fab labs, public libraries, and coffee shops), and their role during and following the COVID-19 pandemic in urban and regional development and planning. This book presents an original, interdisciplinary approach to NeWSps through three features: (i) situating the debate in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has transformed NeWSp business models and the everyday work life of their owners and users; (ii) repositioning and rethinking the debate on NeWSps in the context of socioeconomics and planning and comparing conditions between before and during the COVID-19 pandemic; and (iii) providing new directions for urban and regional development and resilience to the COVID-19 pandemic, considering new ways of working and living. The 17 chapters are co-authored by both leading international scholars who have studied the proliferation of NeWSps in the last decade and young, talented researchers, resulting in a total of 55 co-authors from different disciplines (48 of whom are currently involved in the COST Action CA18214 ‘The Geography of New Working Spaces and Impact on the Periphery’ 2019–2023: www.new-working-spaces.eu). The aim of this research is to have an in-depth understanding of the dynamics of transmission of the coronavirus, the factors that control the spread of the virus, and to suggest sustainable solutions for a robust economy and healthy lives during the pandemic. The study detail out the relationship between the transmission of the virus and various type of spaces of a city such as residential, retail, workplaces, public transport and recreational to understand the process of the transmission. The study also explores the role of probability and psychological factors in shaping the pandemic. The research methodology is based on a systematic review of most of the recent research papers related to the transmission dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 and non-pharmaceutical preventive measures. The study inferred the factors such as type of space, duration of stay, randomness and close contact are important to understand the spread of the virus in cities. At regional level, the factors such as housing overcrowding, urban densities, government response, weather condition play important role in shaping the pandemic. One of the major findings is the relationship between education, economic prosperity, domestic peace and the spread of the virus. The study suggests two main proposals to minimize the spread of the virus in workplaces and public transport. The segregation of spaces in workplaces and public spaces can help us to avoid close contact between people and random movement of people. This study proposed 5 classifications of spaces to maintain 2m social distancing and 15 SQM minimum office space per person. The study develops a sustainable 24- Hour Economy model to stretch the working hours of most of economic activities to 24-Hour a day and 7 days a week. The concept of Staggered Work hour and Staggered Work days has been used to reduce daily and hourly trips. The analysis of modelling is done on the basis of hourly-trips data, economic activities’ workforce data for London city. The detail modeling shows 35-53% of public transport based trips can be efficiently reduced in metropolitan areas during peak hours. And on average 40-50% occupancy of the office space can be reduced during working hours.
