When most people hear the term "radio waves," they think of the radio in their car or on their desk, but radio waves are so much more than a way of listening to music! Readers will discover how radio waves are similar to and different from light we can see. They'll learn how radio transmitters and receivers work and the difference between AM and FM frequencies. Readers will learn about the that roles that radio waves play in space exploration and how they might reveal life on other planets.

There are countless ways for radio signals to travel from transmitter to receiver, and understanding how radio waves interact with their environment is an important factor in successful radio communications. While amateurs can maximize station performance and reliability with the right equipment, knowledge and skill, we cannot control propagation. Through scientific exploration and experimentation, we can improve our understanding of propagation and how it affects radio signals.

Excerpt from Propagation and Detection of Radio Signals Before, During, and After the Implosion of a Large Convention Center First, we carried out a radio-mapping experiment that provided data on how well radio signals at the different frequencies coupled into the convention center. From this we determined the field strength variability throughout the convention center. This experiment involved carrying a set of transmitters tuned to the various frequencies throughout the convention center, while recording the received signal at a fixed receive site located outside the large structure. Transmitters were also carried around the perimeter of the structure with a fixed receiving site on the outside. These measurements were carried out a few days before the convention center was imploded. Results show that. Excerpt from Propagation and Detection of Radio Signals Before, During, and After the Implosion of a 13-Story Apartment Building A fundamental challenge to successful communications into and out of large buildings is the large attenuation of radio signals. Unreliable radio signals are particularly problematic for the public-safety community, since lack of communications can have dire consequences in terms of health and safety. This book describes the physical mechanisms involved in the propagation of electromagnetic waves in the radiofrequency range, inside and outside buildings, in the terrestrial and near space environments, with a special focus on mobile radio communication. It combines a theoretical and an experimental approaches with an understanding of the physical environment through adequate formulations of the laws of electromagnetism. It should thus provide the background needed by advanced students and development engineers for the conception of high quality and reliable telecommunication systems.

Excerpt from Measurements to Support Public Safety Communications: Attenuation and Variability of 750 Mhz Radio Wave Signals in Four Large Building Structures This is the sixth in a series of nist technical notes (tn) on propagation and detection of radio signals in large building structures (apartment complex, hotel, office buildings, sports stadium, shopping mall, etc). The first, second, and third nist Tech Notes (nist TN 1540, nist TN 1541, and nist TN 1542) described experiments related to radio propagation in a structure before, during, and after implosion. The next two Tech Notes (nist TN 1545 and nist TN 1546) focused exclusively on RF propagation into large buildings, with no implosion results. These reports are intended to give first responders and system designers a better understanding of what to expect from the radio-propagation environment in disaster situations. The overall goal of this project is to create a large, public-domain data set describing the attenuation and variability of radio signals in various building types in the public safety frequency bands.
