[Abstract] The heuristic research method was utilized for the study, "How does the creative process facilitate self-actualization?" The study sought to understand the essence of the experiences of persons who achieve psychological growth from being creative. An extensive review of literature revealed few publications that attempted to explain or describe the facilitation process of self-actualization. Thus, this study contributes to the body of literature which focuses on that said process. This study follows a qualitative format: and includes: immersion into the question, incubation, illumination, explication, and a creative synthesis. The data for this study was acquired by interviews with 6 co-researchers, ages 12 to 40 years. The co-researchers chosen were professional creatives, as well as nonprofessional, and each had a different preferred medium for their creative outlet. The analysis of the data revealed 8 themes of creative process: I. A g'reacer awareness of the Self; II. An altered state of consciousness that facilitates focus; III. Experience of time distortion; IV. Freedom for the subconscious to process; V. Channeling of spirit; VI. A feeling of being understood and connected; VII. Cathartic escape and release; VIII. Inner focus. The identified themes explicated the manner in which the creative process facilitates self-actualization. The findings of this study could be beneficial in use by educators, clinicians arid persons interested in self-actualization.

This edited volume brings together a group of international researchers and theorists from various intellectual and analytic traditions to explore the role uncertainty plays in creativity, learning, and development. Contributors to this volume draw on existing programs of research as well as introduce new and even speculative directions for research, theory and practice. Learning and life are filled with uncertainty. Although the experience of uncertainty can cause emotional discomfort or cognitive rigidity, uncertainty serves as a catalyst and condition for change. In this way, uncertainty represents a core facet in the interrelationship among creativity, learning, and development. Considerations for both the benefits and potential costs of uncertainty will be addressed in this volume with an aim of understanding how uncertainty can be better understood in light of creativity, learning, and development. Taken together this volume stands to contribute to our collective understanding of the role that uncertainty plays in learning and life and highlights how conceptualizing and studying uncertainty in new ways can promote positive and lasting change.

The growing role of science and technology in modern society has generated a need for unique management skills on the part of scientists and engineers. While this need is widely recognized, there is little agreement on the most appropriate way in which it should be satisfied. The general literature on management does not usually recognize the problems that are unique to those engaged in science and high technology. This lack is also reflected in the considerable variety of formal management training, which more often than not has missed its mark, at least when judged by the response of participating scientists and engineers. My recent experience, teaching graduate students and prac ticing scientists and engineers about those aspects of manage ment that are likely to be most relevant to their future endea vors, has been the principle motivation for this book. The book reflects some of what I have learned from that experience and has been further encouraged by the convic tions that (1) the distribution of management potential among engi neers and scientists is no different from that of other groups with comparable academic achievement; (2) successfully managed scientific and technical enterprise provides the most useful source of learning, and (3) the process of learning is facilitated by referring to the experience that has proven effective in creating an environ ment in which scientific and technical enterprise has flour ished.
