Excerpt from How the War Began in 1914: Being the Diary of the Russian Foreign Office From the 3rd to the 20th (Old Style) Of July, 1914 Now that all the holes and corners of our archives have been ransacked, and all their hidden documents have been published, it is hardly possible to say any thing new about the events which preceded the Euro pean war. I therefore intend to mention only the most salient moments of this tragic period. I shall, of course, speak from the point of View of the Russian Govern ment, without touching on the actions of its former allies and friends, whose sincerity and straightforward ness have been sufficiently demonstrated by their own authoritative politicians. Excerpt from The Vital Issues of the War The first seven sermons in this volume were preached on successive Sundays in April and May and the eighth in September of the present year. Now that the church seems, in the eyes of many, to have fallen from the high esteem in which it was held by a former generation, no doubt a volume of sermons, even on "The Vital Issues of the War," runs grave risk of not being read. Since the war began, however, sharp criticism has been visited upon the pulpit for evading the discussion of its compelling moral and spiritual problems; it needs, therefore, to be made known that all pulpits, to say the least, have not deserved the reproach of failing to utilize this unique opportunity. So my book goes forth, quite without apology, for what it is - the messages of a preacher to his people in the regular course of his ministry, printed as they were delivered, with only the slight revision desirable for publication. Such utterances inevitably reflect a point of view determined in part by the time at which they were spoken. In this they are in nowise exceptional. Magazine articles, or the chapters of a book, must be finished sometime, and must bear internal evidences of their date of composition. Later impressions, especially of the swiftly-moving panorama of a world-war, would modify certain details. Thus, one could not speak now with as much optimism of the Bolshevik rule in Russia as was possible when Sermon IV was preached last April. Still, I have decided to let the sermon stand, as perhaps an over-sympathetic interpretation of the obscure strivings of the Russian democracy, the final outcome of which is still far from apparent. In such a case, one would rather err by undue generosity than by cold-blooded cynicism, which the sermon was intended to rebuke. Excerpt from The War and American Democracy But it is, undoubtedly, due in still larger measure to the methods of war which Germany has re-introduced into a civilization whence men had fondly hoped, before this war began, they had been forever driven out, that the conflict has deepened in intensity. Whatever parts the governments may have played, recent events and observers unite in forc ing the conviction that this is now a peoples' war. That this is largely the effect of frightfulness no disinterested person can well deny; and Germany's best friends must deplore a policy which has lost her more than a great defeat, and recruited the ranks and determination of her opponents more than a victory of the Allies. If the latent barbarism beneath the veneer of civilization has proved greater than we thought, it is no less evident that men's nerves have not suffered as much deterioration from modern conditions as was believed by those who sought through such means to overpower these opponents. And the demonstrated futility of such operations, were there no other reason for their dis continuance, portends their re-elimination from the military code. Excerpt from The War in Europe: Its Causes and Results No excuse will be offered for the smallness of this book in comparison with the vastness of its subject. The author has felt a personal need of some knowledge of those conditions of Europe which bear upon the origin of the Great War of 1914. Thence it was a short road to the thought that other Americans might be interested in a brief but systematic statement of the resources, aims, and difficulties of the European powers; the manner in which they became involved in the war; and the probable results of the struggle to Amer ica and to the rest of the world. Excerpt from The War in the East: An Illustrated History of the Conflict Between Russia and Turkey With a Review of the Eastern Question The author of this work has made the Eastern Question for nearly twenty. Years a subject of constant and special study. As a member of the editorial staff of the New York Tribune, and contributor to other daily and weekly papers of New York, he has had many occasions to discuss it editorially in its various aspects, and as editor of and contributor to several cyclopaedias 'and other publications, he has made himself familiar with the entire literature on this subject. A large amount of information had in this way been accumulated when the new Eastern war began. The general interest which the civilized world takes in this new effort to solve the Eastern Question, appeared to him a suitable occasion to com bine the results of his former studies with a history of the Eastern war, into a comprehensive work on the Eastern Question and the Eastern war. Excerpt from War Memories Here it is - a little book which reflects upon every page the intimate heart-life of the American boy in France, during the World War - what he saw and felt and thought and did, not only in the great crises of battle; but on the march and in the camp - setting forth the first impressions made upon a soldier's mind, under foreign skies, at the cannon 's mouth, and revealing the fact that everywhere and always his thoughts were of the dear ones at home, thousands of miles across the seas. It is like a mirror in its faithful reproduction of the simpler elements which enter into vast and splen did scenes. We have heard much of general move ments; of grand climaxes; of superb exhibitions of man-power, in rthe aggregate; of millions, upon one side, confronting millions upon another; and so vast has been the picture presented to our minds that we have utterly failed to grasp it, except in its out standing characteristics. We have heard too little of the human side of the great wan - too little ofthe things which carry a direct appeal to the deep heart of America. We have been hungry for the minor details - for the smaller threads for the frag mentary episodes and incidents - for the rare and delicate and tender touches of color which are need ed to complete the picture, and to give it beauty, pathos, power and charm. Ever since, in the lone solitudes of the night, we first began to wonder where our boys were, on the other side - if they were still safe - we have longed for such a book; and so far as our personal observa tion extends it is the very first book of this character to appear in print, on either side of the water. The experiences of one soldier are not unlike those of another; and every fond parent who reads this book will feel that his or her boy is writing, though it may be that his spirit now looks down upon them from the unseen halls of the Great Valhalla.
