We live in a world that is increasingly difficult to understand. It is not just changing: it is metamorphosing. Change implies that some things change but other things remain the same capitalism changes, but some aspects of capitalism remain as they always were. Metamorphosis implies a much more radical transformation in which the old certainties of modern society are falling away and something quite new is emerging. To grasp this metamorphosis of the world it is necessary to explore the new beginnings, to focus on what is emerging from the old and seek to grasp future structures and norms in the turmoil of the present. Take climate change: much of the debate about climate change has focused on whether or not it is really happening, and if it is, what we can do to stop or contain it. But this emphasis on solutions blinds us to the fact that climate change is an agent of metamorphosis. It has already altered our way of being in the world the way we live in the world, think about the world and seek to act upon the world through our actions and politics. Rising sea levels are creating new landscapes of inequality drawing new world maps whose key lines are not traditional boundaries between nation-states but elevations above sea level. It is creating an entirely different way of conceptualizing the world and our chances of survival within it. The theory of metamorphosis goes beyond theory of world risk society: it is not about the negative side effects of goods but the positive side effects of bads. They produce normative horizons of common goods and propel us beyond the national frame towards a cosmopolitan outlook.

When our Father of Faith is tempted to sacrifice his sense of humor on the Altar of God's Demands, God intervenes in a surprising way that really makes Abe laugh. This is the same God whose hungry servant, Elijah, is fed by ravens way out on the ragged edge and towards whom Moses manages a sidewise glance while on the lookout for greener pastures. Then along comes another tough act to follow--the Wild Man of Judea appearing in the Galilee Theater and baptizing Jesus of Nazareth in the Jordan River of God's Transforming Power and Hope. Then, in the very next scene, JŽsus ben Dios, the Number One Draft Choice in all of Baseball, hops a trial-ways bus to intensive-training camp where he comes face to face with the temptations and adversities of the real world. Fortunately, JŽsus has his Spring Training Manual handy for quick reference. Jesus then launches his teaching and healing career in many forms: as a dance instructor, farmer, chef--and even as a flamboyant pyromaniac-arsonist who comes not to bring peace to the world but to set it on fire. For who can forget Marshal Jesus out along the Border of Sin and Forgiveness encountering the Ten Men-yon? Or the homefolks' chant, Dr. Jesus, he's our man! If we can't use him, nobody can!? Because when Anglo-Catholic Father Jesus meets an average parishioner at the Holy Water Basin and asks her to bless him with it, their engaging conversation prompts students of the bible and pillars of the church to take a second look in order to watch ordinary altar candles suddenly take on more beauty and meaning than they have ever imagined before. So, for those who have eyes to see: Look!

In "The Complete Works," George MacDonald offers an extensive collection of his literary masterpieces, encompassing poetry, novels, and fairy tales that delve into themes of spirituality, morality, and the power of imagination. MacDonald's writing is characterized by its lyrical prose and deep philosophical underpinnings, often reflecting the influence of Romanticism and early Victorian beliefs. His narratives frequently intertwine the fantastical with the moral, inviting readers to traverse realms where the ethereal meets the tangible, making this collection not just a showcase of his literary talent but a significant exploration of human experience and divine grace. George MacDonald (1824-1905) was not only a novelist but also a fervent theologian whose religious convictions deeply informed his prose. He is often regarded as a precursor to modern fantasy literature, influencing prominent figures such as C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. MacDonald's experiences in the Scottish Highlands and his embrace of Christian Universalism shaped his narrative vision, allowing him to portray both the struggles and redemptive arcs of his characters in profoundly relatable ways. "The Complete Works" is highly recommended for both the casual reader and the scholarly enthusiast, offering a rich tapestry that reflects the depth of human experience through the lens of divine love and wonder. This collection serves as an essential entry point to understanding the evolution of fantasy literature and the theological paradigms that informed MacDonald's groundbreaking work.
