Interests And Epistemic Integrity In Science written by Jan De Winter and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing PLC this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-07-26 with Philosophy categories.

Scientific research is often influenced by financial interests, political interests, or personal career interests of the scientists involved. For instance, the pharmaceutical giant Merck manipulated clinical trial data in order to make sure that data confirmed the safety of one of its products, Vioxx, in order to serve the company’s short-term commercial interests. This case is obviously unacceptable. But why exactly is it unacceptable? One way to account for this judgment is on the basis of the ideal of purity. According to this ideal, scientific decision-making should be pure— that is, unaffected by financial interests, political interests, career interests, and so on. Although this ideal is questionable, many people (including philosophers of science) still hold on to it. In Interests and Epistemic Integrity in Science: A New Framework to Assess Interest Influences in Scientific Research Processes, Jan De Winter first argues that it is better to fully abandon the ideal of purity, then proposes an alternative ideal to assess interest influences in science: the ideal of epistemic integrity. He spells out and systematically defends a new concept of epistemic integrity, using it not only to analyze the Vioxx debacle, but also to identify unacceptable interest influences in aerospace science, climate science, and biology, and to explain exactly why these interest influences are unacceptable. These analyses make a compelling case for the new concept of epistemic integrity which will be interesting and useful for philosophers of science, scientists, engineers, science policymakers, and anyone else concerned about the integrity of science.

Combinatorial And Algorithmic Mathematics written by Baha Alzalg and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-10-21 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Detailed review of optimization from first principles, supported by rigorous math and computer science explanations and various learning aids Supported by rigorous math and computer science foundations, Combinatorial and Algorithmic Mathematics: From Foundation to Optimization provides a from-scratch understanding to the field of optimization, discussing 70 algorithms with roughly 220 illustrative examples, 160 nontrivial end-of-chapter exercises with complete solutions to ensure readers can apply appropriate theories, principles, and concepts when required, and Matlab codes that solve some specific problems. This book helps readers to develop mathematical maturity, including skills such as handling increasingly abstract ideas, recognizing mathematical patterns, and generalizing from specific examples to broad concepts. Starting from first principles of mathematical logic, set-theoretic structures, and analytic and algebraic structures, this book covers both combinatorics and algorithms in separate sections, then brings the material together in a final section on optimization. This book focuses on topics essential for anyone wanting to develop and apply their understanding of optimization to areas such as data structures, algorithms, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, computer systems, networks, and computer security. Combinatorial and Algorithmic Mathematics includes discussion on: Propositional logic and predicate logic, set-theoretic structures such as sets, relations, and functions, and basic analytic and algebraic structures such as sequences, series, subspaces, convex structures, and polyhedra Recurrence-solving techniques, counting methods, permutations, combinations, arrangements of objects and sets, and graph basics and properties Asymptotic notations, techniques for analyzing algorithms, and computational complexity of various algorithms Linear optimization and its geometry and duality, simplex and non-simplex algorithms for linear optimization, second-order cone programming, and semidefinite programming Combinatorial and Algorithmic Mathematics is an ideal textbook resource on the subject for students studying discrete structures, combinatorics, algorithms, and optimization. It also caters to scientists across diverse disciplines that incorporate algorithms and academics and researchers who wish to better understand some modern optimization methodologies.

The Reset written by DAVID STEVENS and has been published by WestBow Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-11-04 with Self-Help categories.

If you suddenly discovered a reset button that if pushed would immediately undo all of your past mistakes and failures and would restore your current life to better circumstances, would you be tempted to give it a try? Most of us would, but of course there is no such button. However, in THE RESET you will enjoy a 28-day journey that will enable you to reclaim the life that you should be living! If you are ready for a fresh start now and a bright new hope for your future, start today and read one chapter a day for the next 28 days. Learn 7 life-transforming Resets in 28 days, and reclaim and finally live the life that God designed just for you! THE RESET is both engaging and practical in its style, but most importantly, it works! When you end this 28-day reset journey, you will put down a book, but you will wake up each day thereafter with a new mind set, ready to go out every day and live your life with overflowing confident hope. Here are just a few of the highlighted quotes: For all of us, life is a journey, and we really want to give it our best shot every day! Even though we can only see in part where our daily journey is taking us and what the cumulative outcomes will be, we would like to feel good about our efforts and ourselves at the end of each day." It is quite a game-changer when we realize that God thinks about us quite differently than most of us think about ourselves. No other healing of a broken relationship in life compares to the restoration of your friendship with God. I firmly believe that most of our defeats and setbacks in life come because we do not diligently guard our hearts. God never engineered your hope tank to be empty or even half-full. Instead, He intends for you to max out and overflow with hope so that some of His hope will spill out on others around you. No matter what start you had, you can now have a great finish!

Practice Based Evidence For Healthcare written by John Gabbay and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-11-19 with Medical categories.

This book challenges the evidence-based practice movement to re-think its assumptions. Firmly rooted in real practice while drawing lucidly on a great breadth of theoretical frameworks, it examines afresh how clinicians use knowledge. Evidence-based practice has recently become a key part of the training of all health professionals. Yet despite its ‘gold-standard’ status, it is faltering because too much effort has gone into insisting on an idealised model of how clinicians ought to use the best evidence, while not enough has been done to understand why they so often don’t. Practice-based Evidence for Healthcare is a groundbreaking attempt to redress that imbalance. Examining how clinicians actually develop and use clinical knowledge day-to-day, the authors conclude that they use ‘mindlines’– internalised, collectively reinforced, tacit guidelines. Mindlines embody the composite and flexible knowledge that clinicians need in practice. They are built up during training and continually updated from a wide range of formal and informal sources. Before new evidence becomes part of practitioners’ mindlines, it is transformed by their interactions with colleagues and patients via their communities of practice and networks of trusted colleagues. To explore how mindlines work Gabbay and le May draw on a wide range of disciplines to analyse their detailed observations of clinical practice in the UK and the US. Their conclusions and provocative recommendations will be of value to all practitioners, health service managers, policymakers, researchers, educators and students involved in the promotion of evidence-based practice.
