In this small book Lama Zopa Rinpoche covers an incredible amount of ground. He starts by emphasizing the importance of compassion and universal responsibility and how to make life meaningful, then gives a brief explanation of the nature of the enlightened mind and how we can attain it, and finally offers an amazing and extensive explanation of emptiness, the ultimate nature of reality, analyzing the way various phenomena exist and teaching how to meditate on emptiness. Within these teachings, Rinpoche also touches on several of the other main points of the path to enlightenment, such as bodhicitta, the three scopes and impermanence. But, in the end, this wonderfully practical book is a manifestation of Rinpoche's peerless wisdom realizing emptiness and a testament to the personal experience of this rare and precious teacher. This book is made possible by kind supporters of the Archive who, like you, appreciate how we make these teachings freely available in so many ways, including in our website for instant reading, listening or downloading, and as printed and electronic books. The Washington Post Notable Non-Fiction of 2013 “I can imagine few more enjoyable ways of thinking than to read this book.”—Sarah Bakewell, New York Times Book Review, front-page review Tackling the “darkest question in all of philosophy” with “raffish erudition” (Dwight Garner, New York Times), author Jim Holt explores the greatest metaphysical mystery of all: why is there something rather than nothing? This runaway bestseller, which has captured the imagination of critics and the public alike, traces our latest efforts to grasp the origins of the universe. Holt adopts the role of cosmological detective, traveling the globe to interview a host of celebrated scientists, philosophers, and writers, “testing the contentions of one against the theories of the other” (Jeremy Bernstein, Wall Street Journal). As he interrogates his list of ontological culprits, the brilliant yet slyly humorous Holt contends that we might have been too narrow in limiting our suspects to God versus the Big Bang. This “deft and consuming” (David Ulin, Los Angeles Times) narrative humanizes the profound questions of meaning and existence it confronts.

When we ask whether something exists, we expect a yes or no answer, not a further query about what kind of existence, how much of it, whether we mean existence for you or existence for me, or whether we are asking about some property which it might have. In this book, this simple requirement is defended and pursued into its various and sometimes surprising implications. In the course of this pursuit, such questions arise as `Do appearances exist?' `Do unknowable things exist?' `Do past and future exist?' `Does God necessarily exist?' This novel and non-technical approach to important philosophical questions will be of interest to senior students of philosophy and, indeed, to all general readers with philosophical interests.

It is easy to distinguish what it is from what it is not, just by telling them apart, or just by knowing what exists, from what it does not. And this is the empirical approach while studying Existence. Yet what exactly is Existence in itself? How or where does Existence exist? Is Existence limited to the human existence, perception, and reasoning? Is Existence limited to the cognitive summation of all living beings? Yes, because all living beings form Existence, just because the term 'being' implies to be, to exist. However, the term 'real' implies the same. Because the concept 'existence' has a multitude of terms defining it, and now we have to consider them while studying Existence in all details. And as you notice, we are not looking for a superficial, empirical study, because we already have it, since we already know that everything that exists exists and everything that does not exist does not exist. We want more, we want a comprehensive study of Existence, through all premises: existential, empirical, philosophical, cognitive, interconnected, mathematical, living, social, developmental, scientific, analytical, rational, and so on.But what exactly is there escaping the senses of perception of all living beings in the world? The nonexistent, certainly. And what exactly exists and takes place beyond Existence itself? Again, it is the nonexistent, yet this is the case for us only, from our perspective. Because Existence is relative to any observer. For example, you have one existence defining you, and it is your own existence. And in this manner, you may exist even alone, on your own, and you still exist, for yourself. Yet for others, if they never encounter and never interact with you directly and implicitly, then you do not exist for them, you are simply part of the inexistent, and so are they for you, from your own perspective. Because there might be zillions of realities similar to ours, but if they never interact with us, they never exist for us, while we never exist for them. And this is the case for all realities, because nothing exists at the exterior of any reality, not even this concept of 'exterior.'The purpose of this book is to study Existence entirely through accurate facts, from all perspectives and in all circumstances, in order to be able to understand it completely. Furthermore, we use Existence to define, understand, and explain everything else related to humans and human life. And since Existence stands at the base of everything that exists in the world, this accounts for everything indeed.

National Book Award Finalist. How did humanity originate and why does a species like ours exist on this planet? Do we have a special place, even a destiny in the universe? Where are we going, and perhaps, the most difficult question of all, "Why?" In The Meaning of Human Existence, his most philosophical work to date, Pulitzer Prize–winning biologist Edward O. Wilson grapples with these and other existential questions, examining what makes human beings supremely different from all other species. Searching for meaning in what Nietzsche once called "the rainbow colors" around the outer edges of knowledge and imagination, Wilson takes his readers on a journey, in the process bridging science and philosophy to create a twenty-first-century treatise on human existence—from our earliest inception to a provocative look at what the future of mankind portends. Continuing his groundbreaking examination of our "Anthropocene Epoch," which he began with The Social Conquest of Earth, described by the New York Times as "a sweeping account of the human rise to domination of the biosphere," here Wilson posits that we, as a species, now know enough about the universe and ourselves that we can begin to approach questions about our place in the cosmos and the meaning of intelligent life in a systematic, indeed, in a testable way. Once criticized for a purely mechanistic view of human life and an overreliance on genetic predetermination, Wilson presents in The Meaning of Human Existence his most expansive and advanced theories on the sovereignty of human life, recognizing that, even though the human and the spider evolved similarly, the poet's sonnet is wholly different from the spider's web. Whether attempting to explicate "The Riddle of the Human Species," "Free Will," or "Religion"; warning of "The Collapse of Biodiversity"; or even creating a plausible "Portrait of E.T.," Wilson does indeed believe that humanity holds a special position in the known universe. The human epoch that began in biological evolution and passed into pre-, then recorded, history is now more than ever before in our hands. Yet alarmed that we are about to abandon natural selection by redesigning biology and human nature as we wish them, Wilson soberly concludes that advances in science and technology bring us our greatest moral dilemma since God stayed the hand of Abraham.

'Why is there a world rather than nothing at all?' remains the most curious and most enduring of all metaphysical mysteries. Moving away from the narrower paths of Christopher Hitchens, Roger Penrose and Stephen Hawking, the celebrated essayist Jim Holt now enters this fascinating debate with his broad, lively and deeply informed narrative that traces all our efforts to grasp the origins of the universe. With sly humour and a highly original personal approach Holt takes on the role of cosmological detective. Suggesting that we might have been too narrow in limiting our suspects to God and the Big Bang, he tracks down, among others, an eccentric Oxford philosopher, a Nobel Laureate physicist, a French Buddhist monk, and John Updike just before he died, to pursue this cosmic puzzle from every angle. As he pieces together a solution - while offering useful insights into time, consciousness, and eternity - he sheds fascinating new light on the meaning of existence. A New York Times bestseller on first publication, this new paperback edition provides a much-needed new take on history's greatest conundrum, in the vein of previous bestsellers like Michael Brooks' 13 Things that Don't Make Sense.

LYWA director Nick Ribush writes: The story behind this book is that in the early Kopan Monastery courses, Lama Zopa Rinpoche would start his day’s teachings by quoting a verse from Shantideva’s or Khunu Lama Rinpoche’s seminal texts, giving a short teaching on it and then suggesting that students use it to generate a bodhicitta motivation for the day’s activities (mainly teachings, meditations and discussion groups but also ordinary activities such as eating, talking, walking around and so forth). Since those days I’ve always thought that a compilation of these short teachings would make a great book, and finally, here it is. Editor Gordon McDougall has assembled Rinpoche's teachings into two parts, sorted by author of the verses and arranged thematically. In Part One, Lama Zopa Rinpoche teaches on selected verses from Khunu Lama Rinpoche's Jewel Lamp, now published as Vast as the Heavens, Deep as the Sea. Lama Zopa Rinpoche advises, "Understanding and constantly reminding ourselves of the skies of benefits that bodhicitta brings is unbelievably worthwhile. This is the overall purpose of Khunu Lama Rinpoche’s book, to cause us to feel inspired and joyful that such a mind is possible." In Part Two, Rinpoche teaches on verses from the first chapter of Shantideva's Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life. These verses describe the amazing benefits of developing the precious mind of bodhicitta, the supreme cause of happiness for all sentient beings.

All Three Books Now In One Volume!Book I: DualismBook II: The Power of ThreeBook III: The Enigmatic MysteryWhat separates human beings from all other animals is our obsession with understanding the nature of existence and our reality. As self-conscious creatures, we question our experience in terms of our unique relationship to it. The questions regarding reality and how it affects our relationship with existence, reflect the fundamental premises leading to the greatest advancements of humanity: language, mathematics, philosophy, religion, science, medicine, art, music, politics, and more. It could certainly be argued that our recognition, understanding, and manipulation of reality is the essential history of our species. This book encompasses both the history and consequences of our struggle to grasp the concept of reality and the nature of our existence. It also helps explain why things are the way they are, and how "mass" consciousness directly effects the ultimate manifestation of our present and future reality. The reconciliation of experience, understanding, and consciousness now offers us a novel view of reality, and its consequences as manifested through existence, that is reflected through pure abstraction. We stand on the abyss of the most important revelation of all time: Reality, is not as real as we thought.
