A Death On Diamond Mountain written by Scott Carney and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-03-17 with Religion categories.

An investigative reporter explores an infamous case where an obsessive and unorthodox search for enlightenment went terribly wrong. When thirty-eight-year-old Ian Thorson died from dehydration and dysentery on a remote Arizona mountaintop in 2012, The New York Times reported the story under the headline: "Mysterious Buddhist Retreat in the Desert Ends in a Grisly Death." Scott Carney, a journalist and anthropologist who lived in India for six years, was struck by how Thorson’s death echoed other incidents that reflected the little-talked-about connection between intensive meditation and mental instability. Using these tragedies as a springboard, Carney explores how those who go to extremes to achieve divine revelations—and undertake it in illusory ways—can tangle with madness. He also delves into the unorthodox interpretation of Tibetan Buddhism that attracted Thorson and the bizarre teachings of its chief evangelists: Thorson’s wife, Lama Christie McNally, and her previous husband, Geshe Michael Roach, the supreme spiritual leader of Diamond Mountain University, where Thorson died. Carney unravels how the cultlike practices of McNally and Roach and the questionable circumstances surrounding Thorson’s death illuminate a uniquely American tendency to mix and match eastern religious traditions like LEGO pieces in a quest to reach an enlightened, perfected state, no matter the cost. Aided by Thorson’s private papers, along with cutting-edge neurological research that reveals the profound impact of intensive meditation on the brain and stories of miracles and black magic, sexualized rituals, and tantric rites from former Diamond Mountain acolytes, A Death on Diamond Mountain is a gripping work of investigative journalism that reveals how the path to enlightenment can be riddled with danger.

Buddhist Cosmology written by Akira Sadakata and has been published by Tuttle Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with Philosophy categories.

This extensively researched and illustrated volume offers Western readers a rare introduction to Buddhism's complex and fascinating views about the structure of the universe. The book begins by clearly explaining classical cosmology, with its symmetrical, India-centered universe and multitudinous heavens and hells, and illuminates the cosmos's relation to the human concerns of karma, transmigration, and enlightenment. It moves on to discuss the Mahayana conception of the universe as a lotus flower containing uncountable realms, each with its own buddha. Then, examining changes in the notions of hell and the gods, the author traces Buddhism's gradual shift from a religion to a mythology. Throughout, treatment of Buddhism's historical, geographical, and doctrinal origins complements detailed cosmological descriptions. Finally, the author shows us how this ancient philosophy resembles the modern scientific view of the cosmos, and how even today it can help us lead more fulfilling lives.

A major figure in the transmission of Zen to the West, Zen Master Seung Sahn was known for his powerful teaching style, which was direct, surprising, and often humorous. He taught that Zen is not about achieving a goal, but about acting spontaneously from “don’t-know mind.” It is from this “before-thinking” nature, he taught, that true compassion and the desire to serve others naturally arises. This collection of teaching stories, talks, and spontaneous dialogues with students offers readers a fresh and immediate encounter with one of the great Zen masters of the twentieth century.

Reaching Nirvana written by Lars Ims and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-09-28 with categories.

When the author, Lars Ims, returned to complete his Sanskrit studies at the University of Oslo after staying many years with his Guru, Swami Shyam, in the Himalayas, he wanted to continue exploring the awakened or self-realized state of mind in the Indian tradition. He wanted to understand exactly what the most famous of all awakened beings - the Buddha - said about how he reached Nirvana and what it was like. He studied the earliest records of the Buddha's words from the Basket of Sermons (Sutta Pitaka) and realized that at the heart of the Buddha's teachings there is a very simple path which he discovered while searching for an end to his suffering. By meditating to bring peace (samatha) to your feelings, and applying mindfulness to bring clarity (vipassana) to your thoughts, the negative influences of desire and ignorance will leave the consciousness, and their removal will reveal the true nature of the human being, what you are behind the layers of false ideas about the self and the world: the immortal element, or amata dhatu. Nirvana is the revelation or realization of this Deathless being, which was the only reality for the Buddha. Everything else was illusion. In this book the meaning of Nirvana is explained, and the techniques to reach it are described in detail. The book also provides practical advice including a guided meditation. The most striking discovery during the author's research was the clarity and indubitability with which the Buddha explained what the meaning of Nirvana is: the realization of the Immortal being as the only reality. Nirvana is the true nature of the human being behind the illusion of the mind and body. Nirvana is not emptiness: it is the fullness of you. Nirvana is not disappearance: it is the appearance of you. Nirvana is not about denying this world: it is about being wholly present in it. Nirvana is not worrying about the past or the future, but living every moment with love and awareness. Nirvana is to uncover who you are, to discover the purpose of your life. This book is about this original message of the Buddha.

The Spiritual Awakening Guide written by Mary Mueller Shutan and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-08-11 with Body, Mind & Spirit categories.

The first modern, comprehensive resource on spiritual awakenings, this pragmatic, clear guide covers everything from the first step on a spiritual journey to enlightenment, and the different types of spiritual awakenings, from mild to dramatic, we may go through. Using the concept of the twelve layers that cover an awakened state Mary Mueller Shutan addresses every step of the spiritual journey, starting with the Self and showing how family, ancestral, past lives, karmic, archetypal, and other larger layers such as societal, cultural, global, and cosmic energies condition us to sleep and obscure our realization of an awakened state. Instructions for how to navigate through each of these layers and how to recognize where we are in our spiritual journey are included each step of the way along with common physical, emotional, and spiritual symptoms that may be experienced. By addressing post-awakening states, oneness, dark nights of the soul, ego death, near-death and severe illness, psychic abilities, addictions, dietary changes, the God self, personal and collective shadow, and psychosis vs. awakening we understand the experiences we may go through while struggling with spiritual awakenings. This practical book opens new understandings of how to live in the world while going through an awakening process, and offers the revolutionary idea that we are meant to be humans, to have a physical body with physical, sensate experiences and emotions. We are meant to live in the world and be a part of it even as fully awakened individuals. This guide proposes a look at the possibility of leading a grounded, earth-bound life of work, family, friends, and other experiences in an awakened state.
