A brand-new edition of the best-selling classic with added and updated practices. In 2001, Toni Bernhard got sick and, to her and her partner’s bewilderment, stayed that way. As they faced the confusion, frustration, and despair of a life with sudden limitations—a life that was vastly different from the one they’d thought they’d have together—Toni had to learn how to be sick. In spite of her many physical and energetic restrictions (and sometimes, because of them), Toni learned how to live a life of equanimity, compassion, and joy. This book reminds us that our own inner freedom is limitless, regardless of our external circumstances. Updated with new insights and practices hard-won from Toni’s own ongoing life experience, this is a must-read for anyone who is—or who might one day be—sick or in pain.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 In 2001, I was a law professor at the University of California at Davis. I was planning a special vacation with my wife, Tony, and we found a studio apartment in Paris for rent at a reasonable price. We were not world travelers, but a trip to Paris was a big deal for us. #2 I was sick for the entire second week in Paris, and I spent it bedridden. I was unable to read, and I tried to watch French television, but I was quickly bored and restless. I gave up in frustration. #3 I spent most of each day listening to the BBC on a shortwave radio, which I had bought for myself when I was sick. The BBC had a wonderful array of programs, including clever and funny quiz shows. I began listening to NPR’s broadcast of the BBC News every day soon after returning to Davis and finding myself bedbound. #4 I turned on the TV one last time and discovered that the French Open was on all day long. I made a bed for myself on the floor close to the TV, and a love affair was born. I still watch a lot of tennis.

Life Disrupted written by Laurie Edwards and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-02-01 with Family & Relationships categories.

Twenty-seven-year-old Laurie Edwards is one of 125 million Americans who have a chronic illness, in her case a rare genetic respiratory disease. Because of medical advances in the treatment of serious childhood diseases, 600,000 chronically ill teens enter adulthood every year who decades ago would not have survived-they and people diagnosed in adulthood face the same challenges of college, career, and starting a family as others in their twenties and thirties, but with the added circumstance of having chronic illness. Life Disrupted is a personal and unflinching guide to living well with a chronic illness: managing your own health care without letting it take over your life, dealing with difficult doctors and frequent hospitalizations, having a productive and satisfying career that accommodates your health needs, and nurturing friendships and a loving, committed relationship regardless of recurring health problems. Laurie Edwards also addresses the particular needs of people who have more than one chronic illness or who are among the twenty-five million Americans with a rare disorder. She shares her own story and the experiences of others with chronic illness, as well as advice from life coaches, employment specialists, and health professionals. Reading Life Disrupted is like having a best friend and mentor who truly does know what you're going through.
