"There may also be bonuses and commissions paid to construction contractors when they meet deadlines or stay within the proposed budget of a project. As a construction contractor who works for him or herself, additional compensation in the form of profit-sharing plans or retirement plan contributions may be lower than working for a construction company. However, construction contractors have the ability to set their own hourly rate on each project" (Weisbrot) and command any hourly rate their clients that are willing to pay for their services. The lengthy process of becoming a licensed contractor can be eminently expensive, highly time consuming, and beset with ample challenges.
