A RADIO 4 BOOK OF THE WEEK 'Sturdy advice, delivered with humour and the occasional splinter' Guardian ‘Gorgeous . . . contains fascinating insights about working with your hands, the nature of talent, and how to create a meaningful life’ A. J. Jacobs, bestselling author of The Puzzler ‘Exquisite, purposeful, absorbing . . . a book with much to teach us all’ Ayad Akhtar, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Homeland Elegies ‘People think I’m a genius because I remember my high school math’ When Mark Ellison left high school, no one thought he would go anywhere. A self-proclaimed ‘serial dropout’, Mark spent his young adult years taking work where he found it. Who would have thought that forty years later he would be regarded as a great carpenter, making a living out of building homes for the rich and famous? Full of warmth, wisdom and irreverent humour, this is the story of what carpentry can teach us about the satisfaction and joy that comes from doing something well for a long time. From staircases that would be deadly if built as designed to algae-eating snails boiled to escargot in a penthouse pond, Mark exposes the messy wiring behind the pristine walls - and the mindset that any of us can develop to build our own impossible things. Written with refreshing candour, this is an essential book about building life on your own terms, and the possibilities that await when we forge our own path.

“An elegant and accessible” investigation of quantum mechanics for non-specialists—“highly recommended” for students of the sciences, sci-fi fans, and anyone interested in the strange world of quantum physics (Forbes) Rules of the quantum world seem to say that a cat can be both alive and dead at the same time and a particle can be in two places at once. And that particle is also a wave; everything in the quantum world can described in terms of waves—or entirely in terms of particles. These interpretations were all established by the end of the 1920s, by Erwin Schrödinger, Werner Heisenberg, Paul Dirac, and others. But no one has yet come up with a common sense explanation of what is going on. In this concise and engaging book, astrophysicist John Gribbin offers an overview of six of the leading interpretations of quantum mechanics. Gribbin calls his account “agnostic,” explaining that none of these interpretations is any better—or any worse—than any of the others. Gribbin presents the Copenhagen Interpretation, promoted by Niels Bohr and named by Heisenberg; the Pilot-Wave Interpretation, developed by Louis de Broglie; the Many Worlds Interpretation (termed “excess baggage” by Gribbin); the Decoherence Interpretation (“incoherent”); the Ensemble “Non-Interpretation”; and the Timeless Transactional Interpretation (which theorized waves going both forward and backward in time). All of these interpretations are crazy, Gribbin warns, and some are more crazy than others—but in the quantum world, being more crazy does not necessarily mean more wrong.

A powerful short story collection that charts the yearning inherent in imperfect lives. Winner of the American Fiction Award for Short Story Fiction by the American Book Fest "I'm a seeker," the narrator of "My Life as a Mystic" says. "A watcher of the skies. A pilgrim and a wanderer. I don't know, I couldn't stand law school." Such are the polar sentiments of the characters in the stories of David Borofka's A Longing for Impossible Things, which charts the yearning inherent in imperfect lives. Taking their cue from Fernando Pessoa's "painful landscape" of longing for the impossible, the ministers and missionaries of "Fire" and "Coincidence" look for more than what they find in their respective theologies; they reject what they've been told in favor of what they feel. Meanwhile, everyday believers fall back upon their own intuition and pray for revelation to be forthcoming. Lovers are forced to recognize the finite limitations of their grand infatuations even as they hope for some small measure of long-lasting tenderness, while teenagers resign themselves to the inevitable disappointments of adult life, recognizing the threats that exist in a future that is yet to unfold. And, as the narrator of "Attachments for the Platonically Inclined" says in the context of a 300 game in bowling, "I can't help but be reminded of perfection when perfection was difficult to find. And impossible to hold onto. Reminded that there are moments when everything works as it is supposed to, a harmony beyond applause or appreciation from others."

Muse written by Aakash Sarkar and has been published by Notion Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-05-24 with Fiction categories.

The story cannot be revealed, but the protagonist Niharika will surely find a place in your fancy. It is in many ways about the obscure and colourful parts of Niharika’s life. Niharika who was just two years old, when she was orphaned in the oblivion of her infancy. Niharika, who along with her riches has a rich personal life. It is all Niharika’s very personal story, and the author Aakash Sarkar by his own confession has written her story, as he famously says, because I have looked and looked, and I didn’t find anything better to do. Niharika walks through that house and collects that girl, who is still stuck in the middle of so many sorrow and so many grief. And they have all also lost each other, can’t even find each other. She collects them as she encounters them in her walks. And she nurses them. She sits with them, at that corner or in that room where nobody comes and nobody ever came, and they are all, the whole crowd of it is united by their journey, and Niharika tells them the numerous bounties they found in that journey, like the Chinese portrait, their mother’s diary, a full half house, hundreds of stories, a nose, a pair of lips, cheekbones, sexuality, some flamboyance, and then one of them, holds her hands and picks her up, and takes her in those journeys again, through the long corridors of Maheshwari Villa to the uppermost terrace in the house, where in no more than a month she will find herself sitting in the middle of a dilemma. I don’t know how Godmother is typically defined, but I define it as the presence of a mother in her absence.

Palace Of Shadows written by Ray Celestin and has been published by Pan Macmillan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-10-12 with Fiction categories.

An outstanding historical novel for fans of The Essex Serpent and Piranesi, Ray Celestin's Palace of Shadows can lay claim to having at its centre the most Gothic House of them all . . . “I’m not asking you to build something impossible. I’m asking you to build something that contains all the strangeness and confusion that you can muster.” Samuel Etherstone, a penniless artist, is adrift in London. His disturbing art is shunned by patrons and critics alike, his friend Oscar Wilde is now an exile living in Paris, and a personal tragedy has taken its toll. So when he is contacted by a mysterious heiress, Mrs Chesterfield, and asked to work on a commission for the house she is building on the desolate Smugglers' Coast of North Yorkshire, he accepts the offer. Staying overnight in the local village pub, Samuel is warned not to spend too much time there. He is told of the fate of the house's original architect, Francisco Varano, chilling tales of folk driven mad by the house, of it being built on haunted land where young girls have vanished, their ghosts now calling others to their deaths... It is only on arrival at the Chesterfield house that he learns the sinister details of Varano's disappearance. And yet its owner keeps adding wing upon wing, and no one will tell him the reason behind her chilling obsession . . . But as Samuel delves deeper into the mysteries that swirl about the house, the nature of the project becomes terrifyingly clear.
