Across many social and commercial domains, governments regulate the official names used to identify individuals, groups, places, companies & products, and even diseases. This innovative volume investigates the relationship between names and the law, with its significant implications for identity (individual, familial, race, ethnicity, gender, species, brand & product industry, etc.) and status (social, scientific, economic, and political). I. M. Nick introduces the state of the art on this interdisciplinary topic3⁄4 providing a diachronic and synchronic view of onomastics and the law3⁄4 and expert contributors examine seminal Anglo-American legal cases to demonstrate how name polices relate to broader questions of power, privilege, and politics. Each chapter offers an overview of key issues in onomastics and language policy across multiple geo-cultural contexts, and applies the interdisciplinary insights to real-world policies. This book is a valuable resource for scholars of legal linguistics, forensic linguistics, onomastics, language policy, and cultural studies.

In this handbook, scholars from around the world offer an up-to-date account of the state of the art in different areas of onomastics, in a format that is both useful to specialists in related fields and accessible to the general reader. Since Ancient Greece, names have been regarded as central to the study of language, and this has continued to be a major theme of both philosophical and linguistic enquiry throughout the history of Western thought. The investigation of name origins is more recent, as is the study of names in literature. Relatively new is the study of names in society, which draws on techniques from sociolinguistics and has gradually been gathering momentum over the last few decades. The structure of this volume reflects the emergence of the main branches of name studies, in roughly chronological order. The first Part focuses on name theory and outlines key issues about the role of names in language, focusing on grammar, meaning, and discourse. Parts II and III deal with the study of place-names and personal names respectively, while Part IV outlines contrasting approaches to the study of names in literature, with case studies from different languages and time periods. Part V explores the field of socio-onomastics, with chapters relating to the names of people, places, and commercial products. Part VI then examines the interdisciplinary nature of name studies, before the concluding Part presents a selection of animate and inanimate referents ranging from aircraft to animals, and explains the naming strategies adopted for them.

This book gives my experience of what it was like to go through the process of changing my name legally in the United Kingdom. A name change can be carried out by any adult, at any time, and on a shoestring budget. A name change is simple and doesn't need to be drafted or witnessed by a professional as long as you follow the correct process and inform the right people and organisations. I go into some explanation as to why you want to steer clear of companies that will sell you titles and noble ranks. I also give you the basics on how to word a document and my approach on what new name and signature you could take if you can't decide. Many people up and down the land change their name every year; hopefully, this book will make you feel like you're not alone and if I've done it successfully, so can you. I have also included sections for foreign nations who wish to change their names and those who live in Scotland and Northern Ireland, where local laws differ. I am not a qualified lawyer, and I do not hold any qualifications in the legal profession or have taken any qualifications in the legal field. This book documented my experience in 2018, and where specific laws are absent in the book, rules based on regulations and advice from governmental and private sector organisations regarding individuals wishing to change their name are present in the publication.

Winner, 2019 Saul Viener Book Prize, given by the American Jewish Historical Society A groundbreaking history of the practice of Jewish name changing in the 20th century, showcasing just how much is in a name Our thinking about Jewish name changing tends to focus on clichés: ambitious movie stars who adopted glamorous new names or insensitive Ellis Island officials who changed immigrants’ names for them. But as Kirsten Fermaglich elegantly reveals, the real story is much more profound. Scratching below the surface, Fermaglich examines previously unexplored name change petitions to upend the clichés, revealing that in twentieth-century New York City, Jewish name changing was actually a broad-based and voluntary behavior: thousands of ordinary Jewish men, women, and children legally changed their names in order to respond to an upsurge of antisemitism. Rather than trying to escape their heritage or “pass” as non-Jewish, most name-changers remained active members of the Jewish community. While name changing allowed Jewish families to avoid antisemitism and achieve white middle-class status, the practice also created pain within families and became a stigmatized, forgotten aspect of American Jewish culture. This first history of name changing in the United States offers a previously unexplored window into American Jewish life throughout the twentieth century. A Rosenberg by Any Other Name demonstrates how historical debates about immigration, antisemitism and race, class mobility, gender and family, the boundaries of the Jewish community, and the power of government are reshaped when name changing becomes part of the conversation. Mining court documents, oral histories, archival records, and contemporary literature, Fermaglich argues convincingly that name changing had a lasting impact on American Jewish culture. Ordinary Jews were forced to consider changing their names as they saw their friends, family, classmates, co-workers, and neighbors do so. Jewish communal leaders and civil rights activists needed to consider name changers as part of the Jewish community, making name changing a pivotal part of early civil rights legislation. And Jewish artists created critical portraits of name changers that lasted for decades in American Jewish culture. This book ends with the disturbing realization that the prosperity Jews found by changing their names is not as accessible for the Chinese, Latino, and Muslim immigrants who wish to exercise that right today.
