`The book is well written, clear and reasonably concise... I would have no hesitation in recommending it as a textbook or basic instruction on the topic of evaluation in development aid... It is likely to be a major reference source for me for some time' - Impact Assessment and Project Appraisal This book is a "must-have" for all development professionals. Basil Cracknell begins by reviewing the state-of-the-art of development aid evaluations, including the methodological problems associated with the choice of techniques. He then considers the key issues and problems in aid evaluation, such as the trend towards impact evaluation and the importance of sustainability. One of his key themes is how aid evaluators can reconcile the requirements of accountability and objectivity with newer participatory approaches.

This book studies the theory, practice and evaluation methods of international development cooperation, aid and assistance management in detail from a global perspective. It attempts to answer the following questions: How effective are the current Western aid methods? How should China optimize current international development cooperation? How to effectively design an aid management system in the international community? How to assess the effectiveness of aid?The book contributes to studies in international development cooperation. The theoretical part analyzes the main concepts, viewpoints, theories, and disputes in current international development cooperation, primarily focusing on the differences in concepts between traditional development donors and emerging donors represented by China. The practical part studies the roles and importance of different subjects in international development assistance. Assessing Aid written by and has been published by World Bank Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Political Science categories.

Assessing Aid determines that the effectiveness of aid is not decided by the amount received but rather the institutional and policy environment into which it is accepted. It examines how development assistance can be more effective at reducing global poverty and gives five mainrecommendations for making aid more effective: targeting financial aid to poor countries with good policies and strong economic management; providing policy-based aid to demonstrated reformers; using simpler instruments to transfer resources to countries with sound management; focusing projects oncreating and transmitting knowledge and capacity; and rethinking the internal incentives of aid agencies.

Knowledge and rigorous evidence around the role of external development partners in situations of conflict and fragility is still lacking. There is little accountability for the billions in aid being spent in places like Afghanistan, Iraq and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This book analyses evaluation theory and practice in order to help fill this knowledge gap and advocates a realistic and rigorous approach to evaluating international engagement. Through a series of case studies, this book highlights both the promise, and potential pitfalls, of taking a more evaluative approach to understanding aid in conflict regions. These illustrate the methodological and analytical approach taken by researchers working to understand the results and effectiveness of conflict prevention and peacebuilding support. While well-grounded in current theoretical and methodological debates, the book provides valuable practical information by examining how and why different choices were made in the context of each evaluation. The book shows what future steps may be envisaged to further strengthen evaluations of support for conflict prevention and peacebuilding. The analysis draws on a wealth of perspectives and voices to provide researchers and students in development studies and conflict and peace studies as well as development evaluators with a deep and broad understanding of evaluation methods and approaches.

Aid In Transition written by Theocharis N. Grigoriadis and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-10-14 with Business & Economics categories.

This book is the one of the first to address aid effectiveness as a political and comparative economics question. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union and the transition of its republics to market structures and more representative forms of government, the European Commission has recognized the necessity of a closer economic cooperation with Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan, the three largest economies of the former Soviet Union. This book suggests that the foreign aid of the European Union provided a set of reform incentives to post-Soviet planners. It created the grounds for the institutional and social transformation of the bureaucracy at both central and regional levels by integrating it into the aid allocation process. In Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan, the observed subordination of NGOs to the developmental priorities of the bureaucracy occurred at the expense of diversity and political openness. Nevertheless, this reality led to the emergence of transnational sovereignty partnerships that reduced poverty for the general population and motivated both bureaucrats and entrepreneurs to cooperate. Empirical models alone are not sufficient to delineate all the aspects of principal-agent relationships in post-Soviet bureaucracies. This is why formal modeling and analysis of qualitative data are extremely useful. Evaluation reports indicate the problems and challenges faced by aid bureaucrats and suggest that the weakly institutionalized environments of Ukraine and Central Asia/Kazakhstan are less conducive to aid effectiveness than the heavily bureaucratized environment of Russia. The proposed incentives system for the allocation of foreign aid links EU foreign policy with bureaucratic decision-making and reflects the choice sets of the donor and the recipient. Multilevel definitions of aid effectiveness are provided in the course of the book chapters.
