How to effectively design an aid management system in the international community? How to assess the effectiveness of aid?The book contributes to studies in international development cooperation. Hundreds of new bilateral, regional, and global treaties have been negotiated in relation to the world's most pressing sustainability, development, and justice challenges over the past two decades. The majority of these face significant implementation challenges. At the same time, disputes over human rights, environmental protection, and economic development are increasingly common. Sustainable Development Law analyses these advances and challenges in the international law on sustainable development at the intersection between international social, environmental, and economic law. It opens by examining the origins of the concept of sustainable development, identifying and discussing the foundations of its legal aspects. The principles of international law related to sustainable development are considered, based on international instruments and disputes across international courts and tribunals. Later chapters provide illustrative examples of legal instruments and regimes that address the 169 targets in relation to the 17 Global Sustainable Development Goals. Finally, the authors propose cutting-edge research agendas and conclude by exploring the limits of sustainable development. Sustainable Development Law is designed as a high-level textbook, examining the nature of law of sustainable development. Chapters offer key takeaways and questions to consider for those studying the subject. It also would be suitable for practising lawyers and policy makers who want to develop their understanding of the subject area.

This book provides a reflective and historically situated analysis of the Kenyan Primary School Management Project (PRISM). This is carried out in the light of a broader international review of the theoretical and methodological literature relating to the role, and potential, of research and evaluation in the process of educational development. The case study of PRISM pays particular attention to the part played by collaborative and participatory research and evaluation in project development and implementation. The book is designed to be read on two main levels. Firstly, it provides a detailed, critical and empirically informed record of the Kenyan PRISM initiative. Secondly, the broader analysis explores implications for changing modalities of international development co-operation; for research and evaluation capacity building; for methodological and theoretical dimensions of development processes; and for the importance of comparative insights in understanding the processes and dilemmas of the international transfer of theories, policies and practices.

This engaging text takes an evenhanded approach to major theoretical paradigms in evaluation and builds a bridge from them to evaluation practice. Featuring helpful checklists, procedural steps, provocative questions that invite readers to explore their own theoretical assumptions, and practical exercises, the book provides concrete guidance for conducting large- and small-scale evaluations. Numerous sample studies—many with reflective commentary from the evaluators—reveal the process through which an evaluator incorporates a paradigm into an actual research project. The book shows how theory informs methodological choices (the specifics of planning, implementing, and using evaluations). It offers balanced coverage of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods approaches. Useful pedagogical features include: *Examples of large- and small-scale evaluations from multiple disciplines. *Beginning-of-chapter reflection questions that set the stage for the material covered. *"Extending your thinking" questions and practical activities that help readers apply particular theoretical paradigms in their own evaluation projects. *Relevant Web links, including pathways to more details about sampling, data collection, and analysis. *Boxes offering a closer look at key evaluation concepts and additional studies. *Checklists for readers to determine if they have followed recommended practice.

Towards Sustainable Futures serves as a guide to better understand what roles evaluation can play in sustainability. Rather than proposing a single definition of sustainability or methodological approach, this book gives us the tools to improve the quality and relevance of evaluation of sustainability. Divided into two parts, the first part introduces the reader to key debates and challenges related to evaluation of sustainability. Part Two provides examples of methods and applications. By combining a stellar line up of specialists, theorists, and practitioners in the field of development evaluation with expert, accessible and engaged analysis of key issues, Towards Sustainable Futures is a must-read source for re-tooling and re-focussing evaluation towards the green transition imperative. It should be essential reading for scholars and practitioners of evaluation. Strategic Environmental Assessment In Policy And Sector Reform written by World Bank and has been published by World Bank Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-11-11 with Business & Economics categories.

This book presents the findings and recommendations of the evaluation of the World Bank's Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) Pilot Program. It shows that SEA can contribute to improving development policy and sector reform by calling attention to environmental and social priorities, strengthening constituencies, enhancing policy capacities, and improving social accountability. It also provides guidance for undertaking SEA in policy and sector reform. Although it acknowledges the need for tailoring SEA to the context of specific sectors and countries, the book discusses in detail and illustrates with examples the analytical work and participatory processes required for effective SEA at the policy level. It suggests that the time is ripe for scaling up SEA in development policy and sector reform and recommends the establishment of a global alliance on environmental and climate change mainstreaming to support developing countries efforts for achieving sustainable development. The book concludes by arguing that SEA applied to sector reform and development policy is a critical step for these efforts to be successful. This title responds to demand for SEA approaches at the policy level from policymakers, development and environmental specialists of bilateral and multilateral institutions, and environmental assessment specialists. This publication is the result of joint work by the Environment Department of the World Bank, the Environmental Economics Unit at the Department of Economics of the University of Gothenburg (EEU), the Swedish EIA Centre at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, and the Netherlands Commission for Environmental Assessment (NCEA.) In line with the Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness, the book also contributes to harmonization of SEA approaches by the donor community that is led by the SEA Task Team of the OECD Development Assistance Committee.

Increasing Development Impact written by Julia C. Soplop and has been published by RTI Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-09-01 with Business & Economics categories.

In recent years, private fund flows to low-income countries have expanded dramatically. Some of this increase can be attributed to firms' bolstering their corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities by engaging with social concerns in countries where they operate. Public-private partnerships (PPPs), which are collaborations between state and nonstate actors to achieve mutually defined goals, offer one way to steer CSR funds toward development priorities. This paper addresses the question of whether collaboration with public partners can improve the targeting of private funds for social ends, thereby increasing the development impact of CSR activities. We suggest that, when compared with independent corporate initiatives, CSR funds can come closer to meeting development goals through collaborations with public partners and can further improve outcomes if project beneficiaries are directly involved. By drawing on RTI International’s experience with PPPs that incorporate CSR activities, and linking it to the emerging literature on such collaborations, we propose strategies for ensuring a balance between partner priorities, avoiding frustrations with divergent organizational cultures, and incorporating beneficiary participation that can improve alignment of CSR activities with development priorities and thereby increase their impact.
