This monograph focuses on men's potentially positive role in family planning. In addition, it identifies reasons why so few organized family planning programs have targeted men as clients and why men have so often played a peripheral or negative role in family planning. The document is presented in seven chapters. Chapter I introduces the topic and relates the involvement of men in family planning to social and economic development, men's self-interest, public health, and men's role in the family and in society. Chapter II relates reproductive biology to the macho myth and explains how large families often mean higher social status in developing countries. Chapter III compares traditional methods of male and female contraception. Chapter IV discusses recent research on the male birth control pill. Chapter V presents an overview of family planning programs for men in developing and developed nations. Chapter VI explores considerations upon which couples and societies base their choices regarding family planning. Major considerations include effectiveness, side effects, availability, cost, and safety. The final chapter suggests how men can play a more responsible role in family planning. Changes necessary to bring about increased male responsibility include more support for male contraceptive research and male birth control programs, more liberal approaches by businesses and marketing companies toward contraception, and expanded school and community sex education programs. Family planning is a key component of reproductive health and is one of the effective interventions in reducing maternal and infant mortality. Despite family planning activities having started in the 1960s in Zambia, the contraceptive utilization rate is still unacceptably low and the unmet need for family planning among married women is high. The available family planning methods are poorly used due to several factors that include poor knowledge of each method and the perceived disapproval from husbands. Given the critical roles that Zambian men play in family decisions, men's support and involvement are essential for family planning to become more widespread. If organized family planning programmes are to reach out to men, a better understanding of their reproductive intentions is essential. In this study, the author explores the knowledge, attitude and practice of family planning among married men of Lusaka District of Zambia. The factors that contribute towards their attitude and practice have also been explored. These factors can be exploited by policy makers in order to improve family planning utilization in Zambia and other African countries.

Strategic and operational issues throughout the world formed the focus of the International Conference on Family Planning. The objectives of the conference were to review the accomplishments of family planning over the past decade, assess the challenges and opportunities for the 1980's, and identify means to strengthen commitment to family planning as an essential component of development. The document contains conference recommendations, the keynote speech by the chairman of the conference, and the background document which supplied the key reference points for the conference. Future strategic approaches include community participation, sensitivity toward users and potential users, increased integration of family planning with other development activities, improvement in the status of women, and an increase in men's participation in family planning. Specific program recommendations involve expanding services, strengthening management and training, offering supplies, increasing communication and education, using qualitative methods in research, and exercising caution when using incentives and disincentives. Five opening speeches and lists of the consultative group and conference participants are also included. (KC)

Recently, increased attention has been given to unmet need for family planning in developing countries, but men's unmet need often remains unrecognized. Even though men play traditional patriarchal role in Bangladesh but they become invisible when comes to using contraceptives. This book introduces a complex relationship between men's unmet need for family planning and power relations that can be observed in terms of communication between spouses, age gap between spouses, and socio-economic status, involving individual-level and household-level variation. Men have more unmet need to limit births and space births if women do not have power in the household. If the age gap between spouses' increases, men experience more unmet need for limiting births but less for spacing births. If men and women disagree with each other about fertility preferences, men are more likely to experience unmet need for limiting and spacing births. To address men's unmet need for family planning a broad approach with emphasis on men's needs to be taken. This book is for those who realize that unmet need for family planning is significantly responsible for stagnant population growth of Bangladesh.

The striking upsurge in population growth rates in developing countries at the close of World War II gained force during the next decade. From the 1950s to the 1970s, scholars and advocacy groups publicized the trend and drew troubling conclusions about its economic and ecological implications. Private educational and philanthropic organizations, government, and international organizations joined in the struggle to reduce fertility. Three decades later this movement has seen changes beyond anyone's most optimistic dreams, and global demographic stabilization is expected in this century. The Global Family Planning Revolution preserves the remarkable record of this success. Its editors and authors offer more than a historical record. They disccuss important lessons for current and future initiatives of the international community. Some programs succeeded while others initially failed, and the analyses provide valuable guidance for emerging health-related policy objectives and responses to global challenges.
