Learning American English is a big challenge for ESL students as well as native American students. Sometimes students have difficulty understanding how to read, write, and speak American English properly because some words and English grammar rules are quite complex and can be difficult to understand. Without a proper teaching method and instructional guide, teaching American English can present a huge challenge even for the most experienced teachers. It may take years to establish a sure approach in teaching the correct way of reading, writing, and speaking American English correctly unless an effective method is found to help. After many years of research, I finally found a positive and rewarding approach that will effectively help students quickly engage their understanding of phonetics easily and will improve their English skills in a short time. I applied this teaching method to my students, and the results were tremendous. So in order to reduce teachers’ worry, frustration, or stress, I decided to share my best, proven practices in this book.

How to Teach Phonics Lida M. Williams Every sound and pedagogical method of teaching reading must include two basic principles. 1. Reading must begin in the life of the child, with real thought content. Whether the thought unit be a word, a sentence, or a story, it must represent some idea or image that appeals to the child's interests and adjusts itself to his experience. 2. It must proceed with a mastery of not only words, but of the sound symbols of which words are composed. The child's love for the story, his desire to satisfy a conscious need, gives him an immediate and compelling motive for mastering the symbols, which in themselves are of incidental and subordinate interest. While he is learning to read, he feels that he is reading to learn and "symbols are turned into habit." If the child is to understand from the beginning that reading is thot getting, we must begin with the sentence, rhyme or other language unit. If a story is the initial step, a few well chosen sentences that tell the heart of the story will constitute the first black board reading lesson. The next step is the analysis of the sentence, or the study and recognition of the individual words therein. Finally the word is separated into its elementary sounds, the study of the sound symbols growing out of the stock of words learned first as purely sight words. Following this phonic analysis comes the final step, the blending of these phonic elements to produce new words. Thus gradually increasing prominence is given to the discovery of new words by this analytic-synthetic process, and less time to sight word drills, until they are entirely omitted, except for the teaching of unphonetic words. There should be at least two ten-minute lessons in phonics each day. These lessons are not reading lessons and should not trespass on the regular reading period, when thot getting and thot giving are uppermost. While greater prominence is given to the thot phase in reading, the technical drill and active effort in mastering the mechanical phase is of equal importance as necessary preparation for good reading. Why Phonics? Phonics is the MAGIC KEY that unlocks and opens the door to the wonderful world of Reading. Learning to read by Phonics is merely converting the letters of our English-speaking alphabet into their respective sounds. Phonics is the natural and logical way to learn to read.Phonics is the Science of sounds as it applies to letters or groups of letters called phonograms. Since words form from the sounds the letters make, we teach the sounds first- and not the names of the alphabet letters in the beginning (but teach in a later lesson). This gets him on the Reading road quickly, rather than bogging him down for months with alphabet instruction. Without the use of Phonics, the love of Reading is undeveloped, comprehension misunderstood, vocabulary limited, and Spelling difficult. With Phonics, children from Kindergarten-age to adults in business have learned to read, spell, and write without having to memorize hundreds- if not thousands of words. Once learning the sounds is under way, students are reading words, and shortly after that, complete sentences. But what sets this phonics program apart from others, is that words are taught in 'Families', include Reading 'Rules', and exceptions to those rules. Reading and Spelling taught apart from word families leave the student confused over many words that sound alike but are spelled differently. How to Teach Phonics (by this author) is such a book that will give the best foundation for Reading and Spelling. I cannot stress enough the importance of teaching words in their own families.

To Learn to Read from Sounds, author Florence Barnes shows how either adults or children can easily be taught to read, a vital ability. Without it, covers of books become closed doors on worlds that we would otherwise never know. With the use of phonics, the author shows just how easy it can be to learn to read. The student learns by sounding the vowels in combination with the consonants. Then he or she goes on to build words, brick by brick. The book provides many examples of short and long vowel sounds. After that come the other vowel combinations. All these elements are used in building longer words. After the student has finished with this book, reading will no longer be a puzzle, or even very difficult. With practice, it will become easy. Companion audio-cassette tapes included with book.
