An argument that pleasure is a fundamental part of why we use technology, and a framework for understanding the relationship between pleasure and technology. The dominant feature of modern technology is not how productive it makes us, or how it has revolutionized the workplace, but how enjoyable it is. We take pleasure in our devices, from smartphones to personal computers to televisions. Whole classes of leisure activities rely on technology. How has technology become such an integral part of enjoyment? In this book, Barry Brown and Oskar Juhlin examine the relationship between pleasure and technology, investigating what pleasure and leisure are, how they have come to depend on the many forms of technology, and how we might design technology to support enjoyment. They do this by studying the experience of enjoyment, documenting such activities as computer gameplay, deer hunting, tourism, and television watching. They describe technologies that support these activities, including prototype systems that they themselves developed. Brown and Juhlin argue that pleasure is fundamentally social in nature. We learn how to enjoy ourselves from others, mastering it as a set of skills. Drawing on their own ethnographic studies and on research from economics, psychology, and philosophy, Brown and Juhlin argue that enjoyment is a key concept in understanding the social world. They propose a framework for the study of enjoyment: the empirical program of enjoyment.

Critical Animal And Media Studies written by Núria Almiron and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-10-14 with Social Science categories.

This book aims to put the speciesism debate and the treatment of non-human animals on the agenda of critical media studies and to put media studies on the agenda of animal ethics researchers. Contributors examine the convergence of media and animal ethics from theoretical, philosophical, discursive, social constructionist, and political economic perspectives. The book is divided into three sections: foundations, representation, and responsibility, outlining the different disciplinary approaches’ application to media studies and covering how non-human animals, and the relationship between humans and non-humans, are represented by the mass media, concluding with suggestions for how the media, as a major producer of cultural norms and values related to non-human animals and how we treat them, might improve such representations.

In his latest book, Successful Small Game Hunting, M.D. Johnson helps rekindle the flame that sparked the desire to hunt. With new twists on age-old outdoor ideas and just enough nostalgia to remind you that small game hunting is "where it all began," Johnson revisits the species and the techniques that have helped make small game hunting the grand pastime that it is. Spiritual mentoring, or discipleship, is a relational process that requires people to become actively involved in their faith. Authentic discipleship is about developing a caring concern and a genuine love for others through modeling Christlike attitudes and behavior in the context of relational environments. It starts with relationship. Because it all starts with the individual, we must see one-on-one discipleship as the primary objective to begin the revolution. In More Than a Fisherman, Dr. Jim Grassi provides guidance for men who desire to mentor others or to be mentored, using Jesus and the twelve disciples as a model. Designed to be used as a companion to The Spiritual Mentor and Building a Ministry of Spiritual Mentoring, this manual is for use during times of mentoring and suggests types of exercises and activities two men can do together. Features include: Fishing theme, including information on how the disciples fished Archaeological facts with illustrations and photographs of fishing artifacts Activity suggestions for mentoring sessions
